RINGO STARR, or Richard Starkey, turns 82 today and has made a name for himself as the richest drummer in the world, surpassing even the likes Dave Grohl ...

Thanks to his musical prowess, Starr has been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice, first as a Beatle member in 1988 and then as a soloist in 2015. These tours helped to cement his place as a musical icon after the break-up of the band that made him famous in the first place. He often collaborated with other Beatles members, and joined forces with McCartney and George Harrison in the Nineties to release The Beatles’ first single since the band dissolved. The Beatles broke up in 1970 after years of international fame and success, and 50 years later only Starr and McCartney remain. Starr turned his hand to acting after The Beatles, having had some experience with the craft whilst the band was together, appearing in 38 projects since the band’s split. Starr in particular has buckled up and worked his socks off, now having done more projects than any of the other band members since the break-up.

10 Unforgettable Ringo Starr Moments - American Songwriter (American Songwriter)

Taking over percussion duties from Pete Best, once Starr joined the Beatles the group was firmly set on their path to becoming one of the most iconic groups ...

The kids in the program helped conceptualize the video with Starr and then shadowed and assisted during the actual production. Throughout the show, Starr did what he does best—gave a relaxed, smiling, and cool performance swinging the hi-hat left to right to get that washing sound he created. For many Beatles fans, the track is one of Starr’s shining moments and perfectly showcases just what made him so special as a drummer. By the summer of 1962, producer George Martin had become certain that the Beatles needed to replace Best—and they knew just the guy to fill his space. While still performing as part of Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, the soon-to-be iconic group asked Starr to sit in during sets when original drummer Pete Best was unavailable. Playing the drums with much more “feel” than technical prowess, Ringo Starr paved a way for a new kind of drummer, creating a sound that continues to inspire even today.

Behind the Emotional Meaning of Ringo Starr's “Photograph” (American Songwriter)

"Photograph" by Ringo Starr grabs audiences for its romantic balladry, but took on new meaning after Harrison's death. Read about the song's lyrics here.

The song took all the best of the Beatles’ hummable and familiar melodies and made it fresh for Starr’s solo career. The loss in the song changed from a lover to one of Ringo’s oldest friends. Starr performed the track during a tribute concert for Harrison in 2002, alongside Dhani Harrison, Eric Clapton, Tom Petty, and a handful of other rock greats. In the song’s lines, Starr talks about being haunted by the memory of the relationship with only a photograph to remember them by. By 1973, Starr already had two full-length solo albums that had made him a force in the music industry in his own right. He opted for something a little poppier and a little lighter than the experimental rock of McCartney, Lennon, and Harrison.
