Amazon Prime Members Getting Free Grubhub Delivery (NBC10 Boston)

Amazing Prime members will get free access to Grubhub meal delivery called Grubhub Plus for a year under a new deal.

Amazon has more than 200 million Prime members worldwide; most are based in the U.S. The deal is part of a partnership between Amazon and Just Eat Takeaway, the Amsterdam-based delivery company that bought Grubhub in 2020 for $7.3 billion. Grubhub said its research shows that more than half of U.S. adults consider takeout or delivery food “essential,” but only 38% say they use third-party delivery companies. Grubhub has denied the charges. The partnership will automatically renew each year unless Amazon or Grubhub cancels it. Prime members must sign up for the Grubhub service.

For Amazon, the tie-up has the potential to broaden the appeal of its Prime service, which now costs $139 annually. A labor shortage and ever-evolving regulatory landscape has also hit the sector hard in recent months. Shares of Uber, operator of UberEats, has similarly fallen about 50% in 2022, and slid more than 4% Wednesday morning. At the same time, Amazon could become a stakeholder in Grubhub’s business. DoorDash stock fell some 8% Wednesday morning on the news, and has plummeted around 50% since the beginning of the year.

Subway has positioned this move as one that gives the customer more options, even though in reality, it’s working to move away from the highly customizable sandwich model. As Spiegel notes, time is money, and Subway is working to save time by convincing its customers that its pre-set menu items are worth the cost of losing customization. The partnership appears to be mutually beneficial, but as Bloomberg notes, Amazon has the opportunity for a quick out if the relationship sours. The key, she says, is for a restaurant to “create a system where the guest thinks they’re getting it their way but it’s really the operator’s way.” And if something goes wrong with your burger and fries along the way? “The industry’s prospects have been badly bruised as pandemic restrictions have lifted and demand for restaurant delivery has diminished,” the New York Times reports.

Amazon Will Cover That Grubhub Delivery Fee for You (The Takeout)

Amazon, the company that has dutifully trained most of us to think of consumer goods as things we can get delivered to us right this very minute, ...

Amazon is a behemoth of a company, a perk of which is that it’s accustomed to handling logistics on a mass scale. But it might just make more sense for Amazon (which already has a similar partnership with Deliveroo overseas) to partner with Grubhub, a service that already has the existing infrastructure and crucial name recognition among customers (despite recent struggles to keep up with competitors DoorDash and Uber Eats). Other “perks” are as you might expect, including the ability to earn rewards and access to a donation-matching program in which you donate the change by rounding up your order and Grubhub matches that donation. It’s also worth noting that you can’t currently activate the promotion though Grubhub directly; you have to do it through Amazon. I originally went to Grubhub’s website and clicked through to the Grubhub+ section. “Amazon has redefined convenience with Prime and we’re confident this offering will expose many new diners to the value of Grubhub+ while driving more business to our restaurant partners and drivers.” Amazon Prime subscribers now have access to a free year of Grubhub+, meaning they won’t have to pay delivery fees for 12 months.
