How Many Children Does Elon Musk Have? (The New York Times)

Name-change documents filed in Texas show that the outspoken entrepreneur recently fathered twins with Shivon Zilis, a director at one of his companies.

In an interview with The New York Times in 2020, shortly after his son with Grimes was born, Mr. Musk said: “Right now there’s not much I can do. Mr. Musk has spoken in the past about his concerns that people are not procreating enough. His twins with Ms. Zilis bring the known total of Mr. Musk’s children to nine. Mr. Musk, who did not respond to a message seeking comment, tweets frequently to his 100 million followers on the platform. In March, Insider reported that SpaceX, Mr. Musk’s spaceflight venture, paid $250,000 to a flight attendant who worked for the company’s corporate jet fleet after she accused Mr. Musk of asking her for an erotic massage and showing her his penis. When the kid gets older, there will be more of a role for me.” She is also a board member of OpenAI, an artificial intelligence research organization of which Mr. Musk was a founding chairman. According to her LinkedIn profile, she is the director of operations and special projects at Neuralink, where Mr. Musk is a co-chief executive. Everyone’s entitled to their opinion but mine is that there’s no one I respect and admire more.” Ms. Zilis did not respond to a request for comment. Mr. Musk denied the allegations on Twitter, calling them “utterly untrue.” Ms. Zilis was a project director at Tesla from 2017 to 2019. The company is building a computer interface for the brain to treat neurological conditions.

(She later defined "The Mission" as "sustainable energy, making humanity a multiplanetary species and the preservation of consciousness." The day the article was published, she tweeted, "Me and E have broken up *again* since the writing of this article haha, but he's my best friend and the love of my life, and my life and art are forever dedicated to The Mission now." Musk and Amber Heard — who dated for about a year in 2016 — may also have frozen embryos together. As he wrote in a 2017 paper published in the academic journal New Space, he sees a human presence on the red planet as a safeguard against "some eventual extinction event." Replacement-level fertility, or the average number of children a woman would need to have in her lifetime in order for a generation to replace itself, is 2.1. In 2020, as The Journal pointed out, the total fertility rate in the United States was down to 1.64, though the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported that in 2021 the number of births in the US rose for the first time in seven years. In response to a tweet in 2021 praising him for his large family, he wrote: "I'm trying to set a good example! We see each other all the time ... We just have our own thing going on, and I don't expect other people to understand it." Since the beginning of 2022, the mogul has tweeted more than a dozen times about population issues. Zilis lived in San Francisco before buying a home in a gated community in Austin in August, about three months before the twins were born. Today she holds the title of director of operations and special projects for Neuralink, where Musk is a co-CEO. She previously worked as a project director in the CEO's office. The order was approved by a judge in Austin, Texas, this May. (Insider is withholding the children's names to protect their privacy.) The twins were born weeks before Musk and Claire Boucher, the musician who performs as Grimes, had their second child via surrogate in December. In 2017, Zilis moved to Tesla, where she was a project director, deploying her AI expertise on the Autopilot and chip-design teams.

Twitter does not ban all bots, which include accounts that post otter pictures on the hour or the temperature in a specific location. “It doesn’t seem to me that a court would find that persuasive.” Tobias cited Musk’s own waving of due diligence in his hasty acceptance of the deal. It said it has always been comfortable that the total comes under the 5 percent threshold. He accused Twitter of withholding information, while the company said it was acting in good faith and providing everything the deal’s terms required it to. Outside researchers have sometimes said the number of bots and spam accounts could be much higher than Twitter’s estimate. “It does seem to me that it undercuts a lot of arguments he could try to make otherwise,” he said. Musk waived his right to take a deeper look at the company’s finances when he signed the deal. Twitter itself has said it intends to complete the deal. Musk has agreed to complete it unless something major happens to Twitter’s business, and legal experts doubt the bot issue would qualify. Now that Musk’s team has concluded it cannot verify Twitter’s figures on spam accounts, one of the people said, it is expected to take potentially drastic action. “We believe this agreement is in the best interest of all shareholders. Twitter’s share price has fallen dramatically since his takeover bid in April, leading to the impression that he is overpaying.

In a country where child care costs are unsustainable even for many middle-class families, and one in six children suffer from hunger, 20% miss at least a meal a day, and 30% Black children miss a meal during the weekend, the large families Musk congratulates people on having are either a great privilege, or a complete nightmare. Grimes didn’t carry her second, a surrogate did, and all of them likely have had the privilege of having significant child care support that they can afford. Although there are some arguments in favor of delaying having children to help the planet, population decline can indeed be worrisome—in wealthy nations at least.

Twitter Is Ready for a Potential Legal Battle With Elon Musk (The New York Times)

Mr. Musk has appeared reluctant to proceed with the $44 billion agreement, citing uncertainty about the number of fake accounts on the platform.

Twitter strongly believes that the deal contract is on its side, and that it would be an uphill battle for Mr. Musk. The deal has a “ specific performance clause,” which gives the company the right to sue him and force him to complete the deal so long as the debt financing he has corralled remains intact. A case could be heard in Delaware, where Twitter is registered. Mr. Musk did not respond to a request for a comment. But he may try to claim that this disclosure is intentionally misleading, a very high bar to meet legally. A $44 billion deal was reached in April between Mr. Musk and Twitter, and the two sides have since been working to close the deal. It has continued to share additional information with him.

Elon Musk and Shivon Zilis had twins, and the Twitter acquisition is ... (The Verge)

This week in Elon Musk news, we found out about two new kids in the family, Musk picked another fight about Twitter, and he's still all about Mars.

We’ve been saying for a while that Musk’s whole “I love free speech no matter what but also follow the rules of governments” thing was never going to actually work in the real world. With every scandal, it becomes a little more obvious why he sees Twitter as so valuable: it’s an unparalleled narrative-control machine with which he can tell 100 million people at a time that everything’s a lie or a joke or not as big a deal as you think or irrelevant because all we should care about is Mars. Twitter is, to borrow a phrase from Apple, Musk’s reality distortion field. Always. He has these big goals — make gas cars obsolete, get to Mars, fix traffic, understand the human brain, on and on — and has proven he doesn’t particularly care what it takes to accomplish them. The Washington Post reported that Musk’s Twitter acquisition may be falling apart but didn’t provide any reason why other than “Elon is still mad about bots.” Meanwhile, Twitter continues to go out of its way to say it does not have a bot problem. He’s even back to pumping Dogecoin, though it turns out not even Musk can save the crashing prices of crypto. The Indian government has been tightening its rules for online speech and demanded Twitter remove certain accounts and posts for violating its new laws. There’s been a lot of talk about the Musk family over the last couple of weeks. There’s still exactly zero evidence that Musk plays by the rules, acknowledges those rules, or even allows rules to exist in the first place. Musk does as Musk wants — all the time, everywhere. Elon Musk’s pinned tweet is from May. It’s a chart from The Wall Street Journal showing that the US fertility rate has been below the “replacement level” since the 1970s. This is just how Musk operates — and how his companies operate by extension. “USA birth rate has been below min sustainable levels for ~50 years,” was Musk’s contribution to the tweet.

(Musk recently sent an email to employees at Tesla demanding that everyone spend a minimum of 40 hours in the office per week.) Nick Cannon, the television host who Thursday said he is “ right there with” Musk in having a big family, was also included in the reply. Elon Musk and the World's Biggest Case of Buyer's Remorse (New York Magazine)

The richest man on the planet can get everything he wants, but maybe what he's after is the thrill of the impossible.

Maybe Musk is just trying to lower the price of the deal so that he doesn’t have to leverage most of his personal fortune to buy a company he seemingly no longer wants. But there are a lot of people who think this is part of a larger ploy to abandon the deal altogether. And saying again that he doesn’t have enough data could be another attempt at the same strategy to delay or pressure the board to change the terms of the deal. If Musk got all the information that he asked for, how could he still be lacking the data to figure out the deal with the bots? Yesterday, the Washington Post reported that Musk has stopped engaging in talks to fund the deal with other investors because of the number of bots, and it certainly looks like he’s really trying to back out of it or at least negotiate the deal through the press. But whether or not it’s enough to get out of the deal remains to be seen.

Elon Musk officially tries to bail on buying Twitter (The Verge)

Elon Musk has filed to back out of his deal to buy Twitter, accusing the company of making false and misleading statements during their negotiations.

On some level, Musk’s Twitter acquisition had always seemed more like a game than a real attempt to purchase and grow a business. Musk seemed to relish the ability to make wishful product plans about free speech and corporate independence more than he wanted to develop a coherent business plan for Twitter. According to The New York Times, Musk laid out goals for Twitter under his leadership that seemed wildly ambitious, to say the least. Twitter still hopes to close the deal, despite Musk’s attempted termination. And there’s good reason for Twitter to want to keep the agreement together: the deal was a potentially lucrative one for Twitter shareholders, offering $54.20 per share, up from the $36.81 it closed at today. “Twitter has failed or refused to provide this information.” It’s incumbent that Musk prove that Twitter has breached their agreement, as he can’t just pull out the signed agreement because he feels like it.

That type of resolution is common in merger disputes, he said, citing the recent deal involving luxury brands Luis Vuitton and Tiffany, which went to court but was ultimately completed at a lower price. Twitter has said that it relies on public and private information, such as ISP numbers and geographic data, on its users to count bots on the platform. "For nearly two months, Mr. Musk has sought the data and information necessary to 'make an independent assessment of the prevalence of fake or spam accounts on Twitter's platform,'" the Friday letter reads. Analysts have speculated that the concerns may be an attempt to create a pretext to get out of a deal he may now see as overpriced, after Twitter shares and the broader tech market have declined in recent weeks. In response, Twitter agreed to hand over its "firehose" stream of tweets Musk has for weeks expressed concerns, without any apparent evidence, that there are a greater number of bots and spam accounts on the platform than Twitter has said publicly.

Billionaire Elon Musk says he's terminating his $44 billion deal to buy Twitter because the company failed to address his concerns over spam accounts.

While Twitter has said bots make up just 5% of its monetizable daily active users, the letter says that Twitter appears to be “dramatically understating” the proportion of spam and false accounts. “And who says he’s still not trying to acquire it?” Grygiel said. Musk’s $44 billion deal was confirmed in late April after Musk spent nearly three months buying up Twitter shares to increase his stake in the company. Attorney Richard Signorelli said he hopes Musk pays a “hefty penalty” to get out of the deal. Tumbling stock prices, low investor confidence, stockholder lawsuits, and business disruptions were just a few of the possibilities the company laid out. We are confident we will prevail in the Delaware Court of Chancery," the tweet read. Donald Trump Jr. declared that Musk walking away from the deal meant Twitter was caught lying about spam accounts. Musk has previously contended that the count is 20% or higher. The stock has fallen sharply since the board accepted Musk's offer to buy the company in April for $54.20 a share. He is popular on Twitter, where he chimes in on politics, talks business openly, and embraces the internet’s meme culture. Its base is made out of foam and then it was coated in the same material used to line truck beds. Musk reportedly welcomed twins with an executive at one of his companies—and she has something in common with the mothers of his other children.

While the three mothers of his children are Canadian, he has had relationships with women from other countries, being married to English-born actor Talulah Riley between 2010 and 2012. "I love Canada!" Elon Musk tweeted during an online conversation back in February 2017. "Right now there's not much I can do. He told The New York Times in 2020 that he doesn't play a prominent role in his children's lives when they are very young. While Musk was born in South Africa and has been based in the U.S. for decades, he did briefly live in Canada from the age of 17, having obtained citizenship through his mother, Maye Musk, who was born in the Great White North. With the news that Elon Musk quietly welcomed twins with an executive at one of his companies, one factor stood out about the women who have borne his children—all three of them were born in Canada.

Elon Musk became father of twins last year, say reports (BBC News)

Elon Musk's latest tweets appear to confirm reports he had twins in late 2021 with Shivon Zilis - an executive at his technology company Neuralink.

There is no suggestion that Elon Musk has broken any rules, but the story won't help his reputation with many employees at Twitter, a company he is planning to buy. American media company Insider's report on Wednesday cited court documents identifying Ms Zilis and Mr Musk on a petition to change the name of a child, filed to a Texas district court in April 2022. "Far too many people are under the illusion that Earth is overpopulated, even though birth rate trends are so obviously headed to population collapse," Mr Musk said in a reply to his tweet. The tech giant and business magnate has previously claimed that a declining birth rate combined with the rise of artificial intelligence could result in "not enough people" being in the world. The twins born to Mr Musk and Ms Zilis would be his second set, having previously fathered twins and triplets with former wife and Canadian author Justine Wilson. Mr Musk responded by tweeting on Thursday that he was "doing my best to help the underpopulation crisis".

Is Elon Musk Trying to Populate Mars Himself? (New York Magazine)

After Business Insider reported that Musk recently fathered twins with one of his executives, the mogul tweets about underpopulation.

“Population of Mars is still zero people!” he tweeted Thursday, as if he were going to populate Mars on his own power. “Part of Musk’s concern about declining birth rates appears to stem from the idea that there won’t be enough humans to populate Mars,” Insider reported. It is “the biggest issue in 20 years,” he said in 2019. “I hope you have big families and congrats to those who already do!” he tweeted. He has tweeted “more than a dozen times about population issues” since the start of 2022, Insider reported. With the addition of the twins, Musk’s brood now totals nine children.
