We both wanted to make things better for the country we both loved, and that never wavered.” …But the two things we never talked about — we never talked about his imprisonment in the Hanoi Hilton, nor the death of my wife and my daughter. “John and I traveled the world together, literally, traveled the world together,” Biden said. In giving the Medal of Freedom to McCain, along with Simpson, another former Senate colleague, Biden seemed to have a wistfulness for another era of politics, when partisan rivals didn’t make their rancor personal. Even though they ran against each other in 2008, with McCain the Republican nominee for president and Biden the Democratic nominee for vice president, Biden said that “I never stopped admiring John. I never said a negative thing about him in my life, because I knew his honor, his courage and his commitment. Washington will receive the award at a later date, Biden said.

The Presidential Medal of Freedom, which was established under former President John F. Kennedy, is one of the highest awards a civilian can receive.

She was one of only seven women generals in the Armed Forces when she retired in 1985. McCain, who died of brain cancer in 2018, served for decades in the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate and was the Republican nominee for president in 2008. He also served as U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic under Obama. Washington, whom Biden called "one of our greatest actors in American history," has COVID and was unable to attend the ceremony. She is also a prominent advocate for economic justice, immigration reform, and healthcare policy. She worked closely with Martin Luther King Jr., who described her as the “driving spirit in the nonviolent assault on segregation at lunch counters.” Lindsay, a New York critical care nurse, was the first American to receive a COVID-19 vaccine outside clinical trials. "We both wanted to make things better for the country." He was presented the award for his public service as a U.S. senator and vice president. McCain, who spent more than five years in captivity in Vietnam while serving in the U.S. Navy, was awarded a Purple Heart with one gold star for his service. “President Biden has long said that America can be defined by one word: possibilities,” the White House said in a statement last week announcing the recipients. Biden described Giffords as the embodiment of "a significant American trait: Never give up" and said she is proof that Americans "will not grow numb to the epidemic of gun violence in this nation."

Biden also used the occasion to showcase his embrace of bipartisanship and to nod to a Senate where he served for decades. Biden himself was a recipient of the award, as President Barack Obama surprised him with a medal in the final days of their administration. “John was denied his freedom for so long.” We used to argue like hell on the Senate floor, but then we go down to have lunch together afterwards.” McCain’s widow, Cindy, endorsed Biden in 2020 as the Democrat reversed the party’s fortunes in Arizona, winning the state. Biden also praised Megan Rapinoe, a member of the U.S. women’s national soccer team since 2006 who has won one Olympic gold medal and two World Cup championships. When the pope pressed further, Biden said he offered “one piece of advice … I’d go easy on the nuns. The president also recognized Washington, an actor, director and producer who has served as national spokesman for the Boys & Girls Clubs of America for more than 25 years. “It’d be presumptuous of me to give you advice, Your Holiness,” Biden recalled saying. Biden once joined her “Nuns on the Bus” tour. Giffords, for example, co-founded a nonprofit focused on preventing gun violence after she was shot and gravely wounded at a constituent event in Tucson in January 2011. He smiled at the introduction of each guest, offering salutes and handshakes, kisses and hugs.

That’s the soul of our nation. The Presidential Medal of Freedom began in July 1945, when President Harry S. Truman signed an executive order that established the Medal of Freedom as a way to recognize civilians during WWII for their service to the country.
