New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge won't participate in Thursday night's series-opening lineup against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.

It’s difficult to question the Yankees’ injury prevention squad, at this point, and they did a great job getting Judge off his feet in 2021 when similar issues arose. Add in Rafael Devers returning for the Sox after a short absence, and it’s a frustrating note to enter a series on after so much momentum was accrued on Wednesday night. Neither does Joey Gallo, no matter what spot in the lineup he’s in.

Hal Steinbrenner already stated on Wednesday that he wants Judge to be in pinstripes for life. The Yankees have extensive cash flow to extend Judge on a mammoth contract, and there’s no chance they’re getting a hometown discount given his prospects. So I do believe the biggest ROI for the Yankees is keeping Aaron Judge versus any other player. … The Dodgers are always in play, and you mentioned his hometown club, the San Francisco Giants. The formula with the Giants, they filled that stadium up for 10 years with one marquee player (Barry Bonds). However, despite his unbelievable season, the Yankees find themselves in a peculiar spot regarding his contract extension. You’d be hard-pressed to find a better player in Major League Baseball right now than Yankees‘ Aaron Judge, who’s having an MVP caliber season.

New York Yankees stars Aaron Judge and Anthony Rizzo were held out of Thursday night's series opener against the Boston Red Sox to rest some ailments.

BOSTON – In a postseason scenario, there's no question; Aaron Judge would have been in the Yankees' lineup Thursday night at Fenway Park.

But I’m also not naïve enough to realize there’s a lot of talented teams…that are more than capable of running the table when it counts. “Better to take one day now than missing two weeks down the road.’’ "It’s going to take everybody,'' which "shows how deep this team is.'' Second to Judge on the Yankees with 22 home runs entering Thursday, the lefty-hitting Rizzo said he was available off the bench in an emergency. “I’ve dealt with this in years past, and I just feel we’ve been ahead of it big-time,’’ Rizzo said of the lower back tightness he experienced during his time with the Chicago Cubs. Mostly, Judge is dealing with soreness in his calves, causing his legs to feel “a little heavy and more tight than anything,’’ said Boone. “Just something I don’t want to mess with right now.’’
