Center Thomas Bryant has signed a one-year deal to return to the Lakers, the team he began his career with.

Bryant will contend for the Lakers’ starting center spot alongside Anthony Davis and should be able to win the gig. He hasn’t played more than 50 games in a season since the 2018-19 campaign. The Los Angeles Lakers’ latest addition during free agency is someone they are familiar with.

Bryant is not known as a strong defensive, rim-protecting center. Thomas Bryant spent his rookie season with the Lakers back in 2017, having been traded there (with Josh Hart) on draft night.

Bryant and Jones will give L.A. a very solid and reliable tandem at center, much like McGee and Howard did in 2020. Either way, he will provide the team with, at the very least, 15-20 productive minutes per game. That figure dropped to just 24 percent this past season. But rebounding was just as much of a problem for them. Bryant also has an impressive 7-foot-6 wingspan. Not only is Bryant young, but he is a workhorse who brings great effort and can energize his teammates and even the crowd with his animated countenance.

Whether Bryant can meet Darvin Ham’s demands for strong defense will likely determine whether he can land the starting job, as Haynes notes he’ll have the opportunity to play for. Bryant averaged 7.4 points and 4.0 rebounds per game in his limited 27 appearances with the Wizards last season, returning late in the year from an ACL injury. For a Lakers team that will be looking for ways to space the floor, Bryant provides them with a five-man that can step out into the corners and give LeBron James, Anthony Davis, and Russell Westbrook more room to operate.

While Thomas Bryant would've been an ideal addition, Boston must look elsewhere to bolster its depth at center.

But going this route may come at the expense of a rotation member such as Payton Pritchard, Derrick White, Grant Williams, or a multi-player deal where Boston parts with one of its guards to add another wing. Bryant, who's returning where his NBA career began, grew his game in the nation's capital, taking over the Wizards' starting center role.
