The Mayfield trade comes on the heels of Cleveland's blockbuster deal with the Houston Texans that landed quarterback Deshaun Watson. The Browns gave Watson a new five-year deal worth $230 million fully guaranteed, the richest deal in guaranteed money in NFL history by an $80 million margin. Over his four years in Cleveland, Mayfield, according to multiple sources, had grown increasingly frustrated with a franchise that had made him the fourth quarterback in NFL history to play for four different head coaches in his first three seasons. The Browns initially told him they were "not accommodating his request." With Mayfield gone, the Browns now have starter Watson along with Jacoby Brissett and Josh Dobbs at quarterback. Mayfield's camp was also aware that short list could eventually include Watson, even with 22 civil cases pending at the time alleging inappropriate behavior and sexual assault during massage sessions. That record was later broken in 2020 by the Los Angeles Chargers' Justin Herbert, who finished with 31 touchdown passes. Panthers quarterbacks posted a 30.3 QBR last season, which was ranked 30th in the NFL, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. The Mayfield trade will have a domino effect throughout the NFL.

The 29-year-old signed a one-year, $1.5 million contract with the Browns this offseason and if he plays well in 2022 for however long he is the starter, it could lead to a more robust market next year and be paid as one of the best backups in the league. Unless the Panthers turn around and trade Darnold to the Seahawks and he wins that job, this move almost certainly ensures that Darnold will not be a starting quarterback in 2022. Currently, Drew Lock and Geno Smith are expected to duke it out for the starting job in camp, but Mayfield would be a much better option than either of those two heading into 2022. While it may have been an uphill battle to try and reconcile with Mayfield, he does have experience in Kevin Stefanski's offense and would be the better option of the two for the Browns to be competitive in Watson's absence. With Mayfield heading to Carolina, Jacoby Brissett is in line to start for the Browns if/when Watson is handed a suspension. Even if the Niners were willing to have the conversation, the asking price for Garoppolo would likely be bumped up because it would be an inner-division trade. So, Mayfield landing in Carolina is really the worst possible outcome for these two sides. For a minute, it did seem like there was a possibility (however slim) where the Browns wouldn't trade Mayfield and hope they mend the fence in the event that Watson is handed a massive suspension for his off-the-field issues. The Panthers improved at quarterback and it didn't cost much to do so. The Browns are also reportedly paying the chunk of Mayfield's contract for 2022. It's a win all the way around for the former No. 1 overall pick. Carolina will ship a conditional fifth-round pick to the Browns that can turn into a fourth depending on Mayfield's playing time.

It’s hard not to wonder what life is like in the head of Stefanski. He designs an offense around Mayfield that brings the Browns to the playoffs, struggles in 2021 and now potentially inherits Jacoby Brissett for an unknown number of games before Watson is allowed to take the field. Still, it would be hard to imagine the Browns dealing Mayfield if they felt there was a strong possibility that Watson would be suspended, at minimum, for one year with an option to increase the suspension based on new information. The Browns are all in on Watson. They sold their souls and immediately pivoted from coddling Mayfield to rapidly devaluing him as a trade asset. Outside of installing a hyper-speed RPO offense for Corral, whom, coaches said, needed some time to put the professional game together in his mind after minicamp, Mayfield was their one shot at lightning in a bottle. If you combined the targets per game received by Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt in 2020, though, Mayfield would have the sixth-most checkdowns to running backs in the NFL. McCaffrey excels as a wide receiver and is best utilized all over the field. It’s easy to see the Spider Man meme being thrown around here, indicating that both players are essentially the same person, but Mayfield is a more complete passer than Darnold without some of the same ingrained flaws. Manning made his final Pro Bowl with McAdoo as his offensive coordinator (it was McAdoo’s inability to handle the politics of Manning’s decline that ultimately cost him a job). McAdoo spent last year with the Cowboys, consulting for one of the more potent offenses in the NFL. He was one of the last coaches to maximize Odell Beckham Jr.’s talent and he turned the notoriously freewheeling Eli Manning into a more efficient passer. This is still a very short-term window for Mayfield to save himself from a bizarre kind of backup purgatory. He brought a team that was wholly flawed and incompetent to the playoffs. The Panthers’ offensive line is nowhere near the caliber Mayfield had in Cleveland. Leaving a roster with Joel Bitonio, Jack Conklin, Wyatt Teller and Jedrick Willis (not to mention coach Bill Callahan) should be scary for anyone. The Browns will also be paying a large chunk of the quarterback’s salary ( $10.5 million, according to NFL Network), while the Panthers are responsible for roughly $5 million.

If he can provide a spark and make this team mildly competitive, Mayfield could make himself an intriguing 2023 free agent. But as the Panthers entered July staring down the possibility of another season with no competition for Sam Darnold, Mayfield represents the best available possibility this team had for clawing toward marked improvement - and a far better option than status quo behind center for a team that has gone 10-23 under Rhule's watch.
