The company, which is owned by Just Eat Takeaway.com, says it expects Grubhub Plus subscriptions to rise as a result of the deal. The deal comes just a few short years after Amazon shut down Amazon Restaurants, its own attempt to compete in the takeout delivery market. Existing Grubhub Plus subscribers can still make use of the promotion, which will be applied at the start of their next billing cycle.

The acquisition—which was intended to give the European delivery giant a presence in the U.S.—though has faced pushback from its investors. Last year, Amazon signed a deal with Just Eat’s competitor Deliveroo to offer its free delivery service to Prime members in the U.K. and Ireland. In 2019, Deliveroo raised $575 million in a venture capital funding round led by Amazon. Just Eat in 2020 beat out Uber to acquire Grubhub for $7.3 billion. In 2015, the company launched Amazon Restaurants, a service that allowed Prime members in several U.S. cities to order food delivery from local restaurants. The company however failed to compete with the likes of Grubhub, Uber Eats and Postmates and was eventually forced to shut down in 2019. Grubhub’s Dutch parent company Just Eat Takeaway announced all Amazon Prime members in the U.S. will receive one year of free access to Grubhub+—a $10/month subscription service that allows users to order food with zero delivery fees. Amazon on Wednesday signed a deal with Grubhub’s parent company to acquire a 2% stake in the American food delivery platform and add its Grubhub+ service to its Prime membership, a move that comes more than three years after the e-commerce giant shut down its own similar service in the U.S. amid stiff competition.

Amazon also owns a stake in Deliveroo, a struggling British food-delivery service whose shares are down about 50 percent this year. Just Eat, the largest food-delivery platform in Europe, said it would continue exploring a partial or full sale of Grubhub amid pressure from investors to improve its business. It said the Amazon deal would add to its earnings and cash flow starting next year.

Prime members must sign up for the service. After one year they will be charged Grubhub's normal fees unless they deactivate the program.

Amazon has more than 200 million Prime members worldwide; most are based in the U.S. The deal is part of a partnership between Amazon and Just Eat Takeaway, the Amsterdam-based delivery company that bought Grubhub in 2020 for $7.3 billion. The partnership will automatically renew each year unless Amazon or Grubhub cancels it. Grubhub has denied the charges. Prime members must sign up for the Grubhub service. The Chicago-based company was the U.S. market share leader as recently as January 2019, when it controlled 31% of food delivery sales, according to market research firm YipitData. But rivals DoorDash and Uber Eats chipped away at that lead by offering discounted service and rapidly expanding into suburbs.

Amazon Will Cover That Grubhub Delivery Fee for You (The Takeout)

Amazon, the company that has dutifully trained most of us to think of consumer goods as things we can get delivered to us right this very minute, ...

Amazon is a behemoth of a company, a perk of which is that it’s accustomed to handling logistics on a mass scale. But it might just make more sense for Amazon (which already has a similar partnership with Deliveroo overseas) to partner with Grubhub, a service that already has the existing infrastructure and crucial name recognition among customers (despite recent struggles to keep up with competitors DoorDash and Uber Eats). Other “perks” are as you might expect, including the ability to earn rewards and access to a donation-matching program in which you donate the change by rounding up your order and Grubhub matches that donation. It’s also worth noting that you can’t currently activate the promotion though Grubhub directly; you have to do it through Amazon. I originally went to Grubhub’s website and clicked through to the Grubhub+ section. “Amazon has redefined convenience with Prime and we’re confident this offering will expose many new diners to the value of Grubhub+ while driving more business to our restaurant partners and drivers.” Amazon Prime subscribers now have access to a free year of Grubhub+, meaning they won’t have to pay delivery fees for 12 months.

Amazon Prime adding free Grubhub meal delivery for members (The Seattle Times)

Amazon will give its U.S. Prime members free access to meal delivery service Grubhub for a year under a deal announced Wednesday.

Amazon has more than 200 million Prime members worldwide; most are based in the U.S. The deal is part of a partnership between Amazon and Just Eat Takeaway, the Amsterdam-based delivery company that bought Grubhub in 2020 for $7.3 billion. Grubhub said its research shows that more than half of U.S. adults consider takeout or delivery food “essential,” but only 38% say they use third-party delivery companies. Grubhub has denied the charges. The partnership will automatically renew each year unless Amazon or Grubhub cancels it. Prime members must sign up for the Grubhub service.
