Rounds of rain and storms will continue to target the state into at least Thursday. Large swaths of Iowa, Illinois and Indiana will be at risk for potent storms from Wednesday afternoon to Wednesday night. Storms will begin to fire up across portions of Montana Wednesday afternoon and track eastward throughout the daytime hours. This area of heat continues to bake portions of the South Central states. “One of the unique aspects of this type of severe thunderstorm setup is that the threat for wind damage is much more widespread than what typically occurs with most severe thunderstorms,” AccuWeather Meteorologist La Troy Thornton explained. “The weather pattern that will spawn a multiday thunderstorm risk is in response to a rather peculiar jet stream setup,” AccuWeather Meteorologist Brandon Buckingham explained.

Derecho tears across South Dakota, southern Minnesota, and Iowa ... (Minnesota Public Radio News)

A destructive wind storm raced across the Upper Midwest Tuesday.

The derecho will continue to move southeast across Iowa and northern Illinois overnight. Although a derecho can produce destruction similar to the strength of tornadoes, the damage typically is directed in one direction along a relatively straight swath. As a result, the term "straight-line wind damage" sometimes is used to describe derecho damage. A derecho (pronounced similar to "deh-REY-cho") is a widespread, long-lived wind storm that is associated with a band of rapidly moving showers or thunderstorms. 3 NNW Sioux Falls [Minnehaha Co, SD] ASOS reports TSTM WND GST of M80 MPH at 4:33 PM CDT -- ASOS STATION KFSD SIOUX FALLS AIRPORT. A storm system produced strong winds across the Upper Midwest Tuesday, July 5th -- meeting the criteria for a derecho.

Derechos produce wind gusts of 58 mph or greater with frequent gusts of 75 mph+. This derecho produced winds of 100 mph in South Dakota and 70-80 mph wind gusts in Iowa. A derecho is defined by a long-lived wind storm producing wind damage over a swath of 400 miles* in length.

Derecho turns sky green, sweeps through 5 states with 90 mph winds (The Washington Post)

They get derechos — sprawling thunderstorm complexes that can travel hundreds of miles and cover multiple states with the impact of a 100-mile-wide tornado.

At 11:51 a.m. Central time, the agency drew a level 4 out of 5 risk for severe weather on their forecast map, writing, “A derecho with embedded significant severe wind gusts appears probable from central to eastern South Dakota into southwest Minnesota and northern Iowa into this evening.” The northern periphery of heat domes is a breeding ground for progressive derechos. The infamous green sky that comes with some severe thunderstorms has to do with what the thunderstorm is holding — water, and lots of it. The combination of yellow and blue light produces green, although experts in atmospheric optics still have some uncertainties about the overall process. Virtually all customers who had lost power had it restored as of Wednesday morning, according to data from PowerOutage.us. Heat domes shunt the jet stream to the north, meaning the river of swiftly-moving upper-atmospheric winds was racing over the Northern Plains with plenty of momentum for thunderstorms to tap into. This was a progressive derecho — or one that rides along a temperature boundary. The green in this thing is insane! Winds gusted as high as 96 mph in Huron, S.D., the same location that faced 90 mph wind gusts during an equally severe derecho back on May 12. Among them were scores of veteran storm chasers, many of whom had never experienced a sky that color. The Midwest and the Plains states don’t get hurricanes. The winds knocked down power lines and trees, some falling onto homes and vehicles.

South Dakota sky turns green. See the strange weather ... (USA TODAY)

As residents in Sioux Falls, South Dakota braced for severe weather and storms, the sky turned green. Here's a look at the strange weather occurrence.

The gray cloud of a thunderstorm, water particles that bend red light to appear blue and ample red light in the sky can create the perfect storm for a green sky. But if a thunderstorm occurs during a time of red light, like a sunset, water particles in the air can make it appear as if the sky is slightly green in color, some researchers say. In addition to heavy rain, the storm brought black, blue, gray and, again, murky green skies around southeastern South Dakota, including the Sioux Falls area.

South Dakota's Derecho Brings Green Sky and Strong Winds (The New York Times)

Meteorologists recorded winds of up to 99 miles per hour in parts of the state, with minor damage reported.

Mr. Rogers said the Weather Service had received reports of damage to tree crops, power lines and some buildings. Unusual colors before or during a storm sometimes occur depending on how sunlight interacts and scatters among different particles in the atmosphere, Mr. Rogers said. But before the derecho (pronounced deh-REY-cho) hit Sioux Falls, S.D., the storm caused the skies to turn green, an unusual weather phenomenon. “They’re tornado-like wind speeds.” Green skies before or during a thunderstorm can be an indicator of strong hail, according to the Weather Service. But while the color of the sky can be an indicator of severe weather to come, that isn’t always the case, Mr. Rogers said. There was no widespread hail associated with the derecho on Tuesday, but the Weather Service did receive a couple of reports of scattered hail: a one-inch hailstone was reported in Sioux Falls, and a 2.75-inch hailstone — roughly the size of a baseball — was reported in Lake Wilson, Minn.
