Joey Chestnut devours 63 franks to win 2022 Nathan's Hot Dog ... (USA TODAY)

Currently on crutches, legendary competitive eater Joey Chestnut won for the seventh year in a row and 15th time in 16 years.

The annual hot dog eating contest has still been held – rain or shine – every year since 1916. The 36-year-old, despite sporting a wrist injury, ate 40 hot dogs and was just short of her own personal-best of 48.5 franks. Despite falling short of his own record of 76 dogs eaten last year, Chestnut put on another clinic to claim the Mustard Belt, out-eating second-place finisher Geoffrey Esper (47½ hot dogs).

Joey Chestnut Takes Down Protestor During Nathan's Hot Dog ... (Sports Illustrated)

En route to his 15th career win at the famous Fourth of July event, Chestnut had to contend with a protestor while chowing down.

He eventually finished the day with 63 hot dogs downed. Shortly after downing his 17th dog, protestors stormed the platform dressed in Star Wars garb and holding signs reading “Expose Smithfield’s Death Star,” an apparent protest against pork producer Smithfield Foods. Chestnut was uninterested in being thrown off his stride. Chestnut put the protestor in a headlock and quickly threw him aside before carrying on with the hot dog eating procedures.

Joey Chestnut Wins Nathan's Hot Dog Contest Again (The New York Times)

Joey Chestnut secured his 15th win, while Miki Sudo won back her title in the women's contest after sitting out in 2021 to have a baby.

Ms. Sudo, who competed with an injured wrist, did not beat her personal record of 48.5 hot dogs, but she kept well ahead of the 12 other challengers during the contest. That left Ms. Lesco competing for second place against Sarah Rodriguez, 35, a bodybuilder from Seattle, Wash. In 2020, the American spectacle was held in a secret location and only open to the news media to help curb the spread of Covid-19. Last year, spectators were welcomed back but the event was ticketed and held in Maimonides Park, home of the Brooklyn Cyclones, to also limit the number of people attending. She beat Michelle Lesco, 38, who won in 2021. The maximum number of hot dogs that a human being can consume in 10 minutes is 83, according to a study published in 2020 that was based on 39 years’ worth of data from the contest. George Shea, the host of the contest and a founder of Major League Eating, hailed the competition as “a battle of the titans, the early gods,” as a choir of singers in white robes sang behind him. “It was a crazy contest,” he said from the stage. Mr. Chestnut, who is 6 foot 1 and 230 pounds and competed with an injured leg, said he prepared for the contest by sticking to a liquid diet. “I wanted to see a legend and maybe see a world record broken,” Ms. Thomlan said referring to Mr. Chestnut. The contest, which was held at alternate locations the past two years because of the pandemic, returned to Surf and Stillwell Avenues in Coney Island, a venue as storied as “the parquet floor of Boston Garden,” said Rich Shea, the president of Major League Eating, on ESPN, which broadcast the competition. The return of the contest to Coney Island attracted thousands of spectators who flocked to the original Nathan’s location to watch the competition. One competitor won his 15th contest in a row and another reclaimed her title as the world’s top ranked female eater during the Nathan’s Famous International Hot Dog Eating Contest on Monday.

A Star Wars-Themed Protester Interrupted The Nathan's Hot Dog ... (Cinema Blend)

The 2022 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest was interrupted by a Star Wars-costumed protester, who messed up by standing next to champ Joey Chestnut.

But instead of just preaching awareness, the one protester should have been aware of his own surroundings when he bumped into Joey Chestnut as he was in the midst of eating his 18th hot dog. With only a brief hesitation, during which you have to imagine a thousand different things fluttered through his mind, Joey Chestnut stopped his eating rhythm and took the dude down from behind with ease before security jumped in. But beyond all the men and women stuffing their faces with processed meat and water-soaked buns, this year’s event unfortunately also featured a surprise visitor by way of a protestor wearing a Darth Vader mask.
