We go over how to watch Saturday's game between the New York Yankees and Cleveland Guardians and make some picks.
Yeah, this probably won’t be pretty for Cleveland. They are sending out a rookie pitcher who has allowed five homers in seven innings this year to face the team that leads the world in home runs. Cole threw 6.2 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts when these teams met in the Bronx back in April (a three-game Yankees sweep). Away Team Home Team Giancarlo Stanton has gone 5-for-18 (.278 batting average) in the last five games, with three of those knocks being big flies. This has a bullpen game written all over it for Cleveland. As for the 26-year-old McCarty, Saturday’s early tilt will mark the second time this season the rookie will be pressed into last-minute duty. Boone’s guys have gone 11-4 in Cole’s starts. The over is 8-3-1 in the Yankees' last dozen games as road favorites and 8-1-1 in the Guardians' last 10 as home underdogs. McCarty has been dreadful this season even in the minors - New York is a bit more capable than those minor league lineups. It certainly doesn't help that the opposing pitcher, Gerrit Cole, is mowing down opponents and allowed one or fewer runs in five of his last six starts. Instead of falling for a potential trap, I'll instead look to the total. He's primarily been a minor league arm and compiled a 6.11 June ERA down in Triple-A. Gerrit Cole looks to continue a dominant stretch in which he's allowed just two runs over his last three starts.

Stanton, who has 19 home runs this season, has hit 14 of them against right-handed pitchers, which Civale is. Cole is red hot. Against right handed bats like Stanton, Civale surrenders a .323 average, .548 slugging percentage, and gives up 1.64 home runs per nine innings. The Guardians are trotting out Aaron Civale to start the game, which doesn’t exactly instill much fear. While Aaron Judge is deservedly getting most of the attention for the boys in pinstripes with his MVP-caliber season, their star first baseman has been putting up numbers as well.

At the top of the lineup sits rookie outfielder Steven Kwan, who put the league on notice with a 177 wRC+ in April and didn’t swing and miss on any of the first 116 pitches he saw to start the season — the longest such whiff-less streak to start a campaign since 2000. The Guardians roll out a high-contact lineup (lowest whiff rate in MLB at 20.8 percent) headlined by a megastar in the midst of yet another MVP-adjacent campaign. Gallo is in the midst of one of the worst slumps imaginable, going hitless in his last 10 games — 0-for-26 to be exact — as part of a larger 3-for-43 stretch that has seen him strikeout over 40 percent of the time. Cleveland was originally going to start Aaron Civale against Cole on Friday, but with the rainout, the former has been pushed to the nightcap. Gerrit Cole gets the ball after previously facing Cleveland on April 24th — a 10-2 Yankees victory in which Cole tossed 6.2 scoreless innings with nine strikeouts. What better way to welcome the start of July than with some Yankees baseball?
The Guardians are coming off back-to-back walkoff comeback wins against the Minnesota Twins and are 3-1 in their last 4 games after a 5-game losing skid.
The Yankees are coming off a 2-1 loss at Houston, a solo game kicking off a trip that continues with stops in Pittsburgh and Boston next week. The Yankees led the Guardians 11-4 after seven and a half innings in Game 1 of this Saturday doubleheader when this article was published. The New York Yankees take on the Cleveland Guardians in Game 2 of a doubleheader. The Yankee hitters are clearly in a groove. To be sure, Cortes has still been fantastic for New York. He has been one of many reasons for the Yankees’ sensational season (the team is on pace to exceed 115 wins). Yet, as great as Cortes has been, he has struggled in his last four starts. True, he hasn’t gotten crushed — he hasn’t allowed more than four runs in any start this year — but he certainly has come down from the mountain.

The right-hander was tagged for six runs in three innings against the Yankees on April 24. He didn't report any issues until Thursday and an MRI revealed the strain. He was picked eighth overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2012 before returning to Stanford for his senior season and moving up to No. 1. Austin Hays had to beat the weather to hit for the cycle. — Appel is one of a handful of No. 1 picks who haven’t played in the majors. Los Angeles won two of three in Freddie Freeman’s return to Atlanta. That was enough time — he hit a single in the first, a homer in the third, a triple in the fourth and a double in the sixth. That was in 1989, when Andy Benes, Ken Griffey Jr. and Jeff King — the No. 1 pick in each of the previous three years — all began their big league careers. Brady Aiken, selected in 2014 by Houston, is a more recent example. — Although so far, 1989 is the only year four top picks have made their big league debuts, there were other seasons when three No. 1s did it. After Chris Taylor stole second, Trayce Thompson’s single scored both runners to force extra innings. He resurfaced last year and finally joined the Phillies this weekend, although he didn’t pitch. Only one other time have four top picks made their debuts in one year. Appel was called up by the Philadelphia Phillies on Saturday, nine years after he was drafted first overall by Houston. In between, he bounced around the minors, was traded in the 2015 deal that sent Ken Giles to the Astros — and even quit baseball for a bit.
