Venus Williams, Jamie Murray win Wimbledon mixed doubles opener (WTA Tennis)

Venus Williams made a winning return at The Championships, earning a first-round win with Jamie Murray.

In the tiebreak, Williams and Murray earned the first mini-break at 3-2 but Rosolska and Venus ran through the next five points to force a final set. Rosolska and Venus earned a good chance to regain the break with Williams serving at 4-2, 0-30. After a pause in the action to close the roof over No.1 Court, Williams and Murray came out firing. Williams and Murray earned a break point with Rosolska serving at 5-5, but a perfect volley from Venus wiped it away and the Pole went on to hold. Williams and Murray swept aside the five break points they faced in the opening set, while converting the one break point they earned. She came to England with no plans to play but was inspired by Serena's comeback in Eastbourne and Wimbledon.

VENUS WILLIAMS was victorious in her first match in 11 months as she partnered Jamie Murray for mixed doubles at Wimbledon.

She then set up two set points with another winner at the net and the team stole the second set 7-3 in the tiebreak before play was paused for the roof to close so they could continue under the lights. With Rosolska serving at 30-0 up at 5-5, she and Venus suddenly found themselves facing a break point after three in a row for Murray and Williams but the Pole saved it with an ace and held for 6-5. The surprise superstar duo had received a wildcard into the mixed doubles draw after the elder Williams sister had previously claimed she would not be playing at Wimbledon this year before following in sister Serena's footsteps by teaming up wih a Murray brother at SW19. And she was victorious in her first match in 311 days alongside home favourite Jamie Murray.

The mixed doubles pair defeated Michael Venus and Alicja Rosolska 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3 to the delight of a lively crowd on Wimbledon's No 1 Court.

He and Williams forced the break to go 4-1 up, then held serve under the ever-present pressure; by the time the final ball was hit out of court, even their heads were turning in perfect unison. There was a pause as the roof closed before the climactic set and Murray, who had foot faulted a couple of times, slid straight into his first service game with three consecutive aces. Their opponents came out fighting in the second set, Venus smashing a ball on the bounce into the first tier of spectators. There was just the right amount of jeopardy in her and Murray’s first-round defeat of Venus and his Polish partner Alicja Rosolska 6-3, 6-7 (3), 6-3 in a match that took three sets and two and a quarter hours. Venus and Rosolska’s gameplan, targeting Williams’s serve and forcing her around the court, faltered against the resilience of her groundstrokes. After the game, Williams joshed her partner for playing hard to get (he turned her down for this gig last year, pleading a sore neck), but the truth was, she herself had had no plans to pick up her racket until she watched her sister Serena in action on Centre Court and felt suddenly inspired.
