According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, Boston is acquiring Malcolm Brogdon in exchange for a 2023 first-round pick, Aaron Nesmith, Daniel Theis, Malik Fitts, ...

And at six-foot-five, Brogdon brings more size to a team with a starting lineup filled with players tall for their position. The now-former Pacer's generating 15.5 points per game for his career, producing 19.1 last season and 21.1 the year before. In 2020-21, he launched 6.7 threes per contest and converted them at a 38.8 percent clip. He averages 4.2 rebounds per game for his career, and he's corralled more than five each of the last two seasons after grabbing 4.9 in 2019-20. Provided the Celtics keep Marcus Smart, which seems likely, adding Brogdon solves multiple needs for Boston. He's a reliable ball-handler, including under pressure, who's never averaged more than 2.4 turnovers. He also gives the Celtics more scoring off the bench.

Pacers To Trade Malcolm Brogdon To Celtics (hoopsrumors.com)

Indiana is receiving center Daniel Theis, wing Aaron Nesmith, and a 2023 first-round pick.

In addition to clearing some long-term money, the Pacers now have about $31MM in projected cap room this summer, tweets Marks. The Celtics wanted to acquire a “true play-making guard,” Wojnarowski explains ( via Twitter), and were able to do so without including any of their core players in the package. Washington addressed its point guard hole by agreeing to acquire Monte Morris and sign Delon Wright, while New York landed Jalen Brunson in free agency. That opened the door for another Eastern Conference club to make a deal with the Pacers. The Pacers, meanwhile, had interest in Grant Williams, according to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report ( Twitter link), but were ultimately willing to accept for a Celtics’ 2023 first-round pick that could land pretty late in the 20s. The deal will send center Daniel Theis, wing Aaron Nesmith, and a 2023 first-round pick to Indiana, Wojnarowski reports ( via Twitter). Nik Stauskas, Malik Fitts, and Juwan Morgan are also headed to the Pacers in the swap, Wojnarowski adds ( via Twitter).

BREAKING: Malcolm Brogdon traded to the Boston Celtics (Streaking The Lawn)

Brogdon joins a talented, young team who won the Eastern Conference this past season.

NBA DPOY Marcus Smart along with Brown and Tatum should mean that Brogdon doesn’t always have to guard the opposing team’s best player — like he often had to in Indiana — but can focus more on team defense and his offensive game. Brogdon will have some of the playmaking weight lifted from his shoulders with the presence of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown while his defensive mentality fits well with Boston’s dominant play on that side of the ball. That allowed the Boston Celtics to, reportedly, swoop in and acquire Brogdon via the Pacers.

4 Malcolm Brogdon trades Indiana Pacers should pursue (Sportsnaut)

As the Indiana Pacers turn the page towards a new future, we examine four ideal Malcolm Brogdont trades they should pursue.

The team has tried to get a strong point guard that can play alongside Mitchell. If Conely has a bounce-back year, he can be traded for more assets that fit the Pacers’ long-term goals. Utah gets Brogdon in return for local hometown-grown Conley. Brogdon is a younger and bigger player than either Conely or Mitchell. He can do some similar things to Conely and Brogdon can play alongside another superstar. As a result, it has the opportunity to play these two players and see if they can be a part of the future. While Toronto is more likely to be interested in acquiring Turner, there can be a case for them to add Brogdon. Here Brogdon can either start with Fred VanVleet or play alongside Gary Trent Jr. Here is a team that might surprise you on the list. If it takes him to reach the next level then the Pacers have a nice guard and big man pairing in Haliburton and Ayton. Phoenix gets a vital upgrade with their third guard. With Bertans, the hope is he can regain his 3-point shooting stroke and then be flipped at the deadline. It’s not a sexy deal but it does free up minutes in the backcourt for rookies Benedict Mathurin and Andrew Nembhard. With Malcolm Brogdon seemingly no longer a fit for the team’s long-term vision, we’ll four trades the Pacers could pursue to deal him. In this scenario, Indiana also deals Myles Turner to another team to open up the center spot. Indiana is hitting the reset button.

For weeks, it has been clear that Malcolm Brogdon's days with the Indiana Pacers were numbered. It wasn't a question of if, but when he would be traded.

With Brogdon in the fold, Boston should be an early favorite to defend their title as Eastern Conference Champions. The Celtics have a strong roster, with two budding superstars in Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown along with a host of quality role players. That is a role Malcolm Brogdon should be able to fill for them.

NBA World Reacts to Malcolm Brogdon-Celtics Trade (CalBearsMaven)

One of the most notable trades of the NBA offseason so far was centered around former Virginia men's basketball star Malcolm Brogdon.

He captioned the post "One goal" with a trophy emoji: The defending Eastern Conference Champions will be an early favorite to make a return trip to the NBA Finals next season as they managed to land Brogdon while keeping their core of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, Al Horford, Robert Williams, as well as several key role players on the roster. We've collected some of the reactions from social media:

Trades are complex negotiations and I’m sure they canvassed the league looking for some combination of young talent and draft capital," Pina wrote. The team found a deal they liked now, and moved on it. It also gives the Pacers enough cap space to sign a max-contract player in free agency. Waiting for the trade deadline could've helped, but it also might've backfired," he wrote.

Celtics' Malcolm Brogdon trade earns raves and A's from NBA media (masslive.com)

Brad Stevens is headed for the honor roll. The Celtics deal for Malcolm Brogdon is receiving high grades from outlets that grade trades.

The potential problem, of course, is his availability (or lack thereof). He’s averaged fewer than 50 games a season with Indiana. They’re not positioned to truly contend as currently constructed, so they get a first-rounder back in exchange for a veteran player who probably didn’t have a long-term future with the franchise. This move is a no-brainer for the Celtics, who get a legitimate playoff rotation piece in Brogdon in exchange for proverbial pennies. Synopsis: “The fact the Celtics were able to add two proven veterans in Brogdon, 29, and Gallinari, 33, without having to part with any of their core pieces is a major coup for them. It’s an ideal addition to a team that wanted more offensive punch without having to sacrifice anything on the defensive end (their great strength and fundamental identity).” Although this deal doesn’t yield the kind of draft-pick compensation the Pacers were probably hoping for, I understand getting value for Brogdon while it’s there.”

Eddie House: What Malcolm Brogdon trade means for Marcus Smart (NBC Sports Boston)

Malcolm Brogdon adds depth to the Celtics' backcourt, but it also gives head coach Ime Udoka a decision to make with Marcus Smart.

He welcomed both Brogdon and forward Danilo Gallinari to the squad via Twitter on Friday. "I think what Marcus Smart does on the defensive end is invaluable, so you can't have him on the bench in crunch time because he's going to have to guard the best perimeter player on the other team. I think adding these pieces, you have an opportunity for these guys to show up.

That group didn’t have as high of a net rating in the playoffs, posting a 3.5 net rating as Williams, Horford, and Smart each missed time throughout the postseason. With the Pacers, Brogdon shot 44.7 percent from the field and 35.2 percent from 3-point range. He averaged 18.9 points and 6.3 assists in 146 games with the Pacers over three seasons as the team’s starting point guard. Brogdon didn’t shoot as well in Indiana, where he was the main initiator for the first time in his career, than he did in Milwaukee. Brogdon shot 48.4 percent from the field and 40.8 percent from 3-point range in his three seasons with the Bucks, joining the illustrious 50/40/90 club in his final season there. Smart’s role as the Celtics’ starting point guard came into question by several analysts following the NBA Finals, in which Boston failed to score 100 points in each of the last three games. “Just slowing the game down in those moments when we need to get a good shot.”

Grabbing more young players is smart for the Pacers outlook long-term, but their return to being a postseason mainstay will take more than one offseason. Dealing Brogdon was a natural part of that undertaking for Indiana this summer, but not all of it. Theis is 30 years old, which is outside of the preferred age range for the youthful Indiana roster. He’s a fantastic screen setter, and his mobility keeps him in the right places on both ends of the floor. The German big man may not be worth as much to the Pacers, though. Indiana wants to transition into a new era. The biggest benefit is that the team now can hand the keys to the franchise to Haliburton, their big acquisition from the 2022 trade deadline. The now-younger Pacers squad did also acquire some valuable pieces in the deal. Right now, Indiana has three first round selections in the 2023 draft (their own, Cleveland’s, and now Boston’s). That’s a solid base of picks for the blue and gold to possess as the front office remakes the roster. Indiana brass will hope something similar can happen with Nesmith, who was a 2020 draft pick (as were Haliburton and Smith). The pick is top-12 protected, per Brian Robb of MassLive. There had been buzz during the weeks leading up to free agency that Brogdon could be on the move.
