The 2017 Kia Rookie of the Year is headed to Boston in exchange for a 1st-round pick and a handful of players.
Theis is a valuable rebounder and low-post defender who averaged 8.2 ppg and 4.9 rpg while proving to be a useful rotation player for Boston during the 2022 playoffs. A former Kia Rookie of the Year, Brogdon averaged 19.1 points, 5.9 assists, and 5.1 rebounds with Indiana last season, though injuries limited him to 36 games. • Malcolm Brogdon
He was the first non-first-round pick to win the NBA Rookie of the Year award in the common draft era. See Boston.com.
After playing 75 games in his rookie season, he missed 30 games with a partially torn left quadriceps tendon. He led the Cavaliers to the Elite Eight in the NCAA tournament before a loss to Syracuse denied them a trip to the Final Four. Brogdon, who will turn 30 in December, averaged 19.1 points, 5.9 assists, and 5.1 rebounds for the Pacers last season and is signed through the 2024-25 season. In his third year in 2018-19, he missed the end of the regular season and the first round of the playoffs with a plantar fascia tear in his right foot. He was the first non-first-round pick to win the award in the common draft era. He was the first non-first-round pick to win the NBA Rookie of the Year award in the common draft era.
Gallinari, a 13-year veteran, is a career 15.6 points per game scorer. Last season, his second one in a crowded Hawks rotation, he generated 11.7 points in 66 ...
The Celtics will use the taxpayer mid-level exception to add him to their roster. At six-foot-ten, Gallinari, who turns 34 in August, does most of his damage shooting over defenders off the catch, whether that's beyond the arc or getting the ball closer to the rim with his back to the basket and then facing up. Fortunately for the Celtics, there appears to be mutual interest in the two sides joining forces. In the playoffs, they ranked 14th out of 16 teams, providing only 22.5 points, according to NBA.com. Gallinari, a 13-year veteran, is a career 15.6 points per game scorer. Last season, his second one in a crowded Hawks rotation, he generated 11.7 points in 66 games while logging 25.3 minutes per contest.
Boston added a much needed playmaker, while Indiana continues its rebuild.
But for a team that wants to lose in the short term, grabbing Nesmith and a first-round pick in July is apparently something they wanted to do. Aaron Nesmith is about to enter his third season and could still bloom in a new environment, able to showcase a bit more of the two-way skills that once convinced the Celtics he was worth taking with the No. 14 pick in the 2020 draft. It’s a team that has a long way to go before they’re good again. A first-round pick is nice, but for it to come in 2023 from a Celtics team that has Finals aspirations likely means it’ll be in the high 20s. Same deal with Buddy Hield. The Pacers already have a lottery-protected 2023 first coming their way from Cleveland and all their own first-round picks going forward. The Pacers are about to embark on a lengthy rebuild. But Brogdon isn’t the greatest fit on Karl-Anthony Towns and Anthony Edwards’s timeline. It’s an ideal addition to a team that wanted more offensive punch without having to sacrifice anything on the defensive end (their great strength and fundamental identity). Tyrese Haliburton is their franchise point guard and they just took 6’6” Bennedict Mathurin with the No. 6 pick in the 2022 draft. They weren’t satisfied running it back with the status quo, and now enter the 2022–23 season with the NBA’s most complete team, without having to give up anyone who helped make their 2021–22 so special. The strategy is a no-brainer. Out of 55 players who logged at least 500 possessions as a pick-and-roll ball-handler, only seven players were more efficient than Brogdon on plays that ended with him shooting or passing, per Synergy Sports.
Luke Kornet's return does not prevent the Celtics from signing reported free-agent target Thomas Bryant.
Boston promoted Kornet from the Maine Celtics a day after the trade deadline this past season. Ten games into the next season, he suffered a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. Earlier in the day, Haynes reported Boston's expressed interest in free-agent center Thomas Bryant. Signing Kornet to a minimum deal does not preclude the Celtics from doing the same with Bryant.
Guard Malcolm Brogdon, whom the Celtics are set to acquire in a trade from Indiana, said there were some indications that he might be headed to Boston.
That outcome was expectedafter the Celtics made Hauser a restricted free agent a couple of days ago. - According to Murphy (Twitter link), the Celtics are scouring the free agent market for a backup big man. “In the past, I’ve worried about stats and numbers and all that.
The disgruntled Nets superstar would vault Boston from title contender to perennial favorite.
But they would be a title favorite, perhaps the title favorite, in each of them. Brown was an All-Star in 2021 and played like an All-Star in the second half of last season, after overcoming injuries and the team-wide inconsistency that infected the Celtics in the first two months of the season. If the Nets insist on Grant Williams, the Celtics have Gallinari, who joins a frontcourt rotation of Robert Williams and Al Horford and could include Thomas Bryant, the ex-Wizards center who reportedly has Boston on his short list. Think about it: Durant is a proven, battle-tested playoff performer with two titles—and a pair of Finals MVPs—on his resume. They struggled to score in the half court, turning the ball over at a comical rate. He has a strong relationship with Horford, who might have signed with Oklahoma City, not Boston, in 2016, had Durant committed to staying there. In Danilo Gallinari, who reportedly will sign a two-year, $13 million deal with the Celtics next week, and Malcolm Brogdon, who was robbed, er, acquired from Indiana for a first-round pick and a collection of spare parts, Boston has done more than kept pace with the competition—it has arguably pushed past them. BOSTON — In the opening hours of free agency the Celtics, NBA Finalists for the first time in more than a decade last season, watched the competition get better. But Durant did grant Boston a free agency meeting in 2016. The Nets have no incentive to tank—Houston, courtesy of the James Harden deal, have control of Brooklyn’s first-round picks through 2027—and want premium value in any trade. Would Boston want Durant? Any Durant deal would begin with Jaylen Brown, the 25-year-old forward. They will say Gallinari, at 33, is an inefficient scorer and a defensive liability, and there’s merit to that.

Brogdon joins Marcus Smart, Derrick White and Payton Pritchard in a suddenly-deep Boston backcourt. Brogdon averaged 19.1 points, 5.9 assists and 5.1 rebounds in 36 games last season. I’m excited to be a part of the Boston family and compete for that championship," Brogdon said.

The Celtics made waves Friday by acquiring Malcolm Brodgon in a trade with the Pacers and Danilo Gallinari in free agency. We break down how those moves ...
Stevens has also been rumored to be negotiating with veteran center Thomas Bryant, who would need to be signed at the veteran minimum. Gallo will offer reliable shooting and a veteran presence off the bench, two things Boston needed in the Finals. Boston has taken on a ton of action on the sportsbooks since the move, with many bettors believing Brogdon could be the piece that Stevens, coach Ime Udoka, and the historic organization needed to push it over the top. Boston's cap situation limiting its expected movement — combined with the assumed return to health of the many NBA stars who missed time in April, May, and/or June — kept the Eastern Conference champs from moving up any further than +600 on most sportsbooks. However, the former Buck and 2016-17 Rookie of the Year has averaged just 51.6 games over the course of the past five seasons. The Celtics had been relatively quiet since NBA free agency opened at 6:00 p.m. ET Thursday night, due in large part to their limited salary cap maneuverability.
The Celtics are off to an impressive start this offseason and have the tools to continue strengthening their rotation.
The Celtics likely aren't done adding, either. Of course, if the Suns swing a trade to pair Kevin Durant with Devin Booker and Chris Paul, it could tilt the title odds in their favor. Boston's also the reported landing spot for Danilo Gallinari once he gets bought out by the Spurs and clears waivers.
Indiana's return includes a first-round draft pick in 2023.
The argument could be made that they should have held onto Brodgon until the trade deadline in order to maximize his trade value, but that's simply speculation. Plus, in Tyrese Haliburton they already have a young point guard to build with moving forward, so they decided to get some value back for Brogdon. They won't miss any of the players they traded, and while no team likes to part with first-round picks, those are the types of moves that contending teams need to make in order to improve. The pick probably won't be too high as the Celtics project to be very good again next season, but it's still valuable nonetheless. The fact the Celtics were able to add two proven veterans in Brogdon, 29, and Gallinari, 33, without having to part with any of their core pieces is a major coup for them. On Friday, the Celtics traded Daniel Theis, Aaron Nesmith, Nik Stauskas, Malik Fitts, Juwan Morgan and a 2023 first-round pick to the Indiana Pacers in exchange for veteran guard Malcolm Brogdon, according to Adrian Wojnarowski. Brogdon averaged 19.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 5.9 assists in 33 games for the Pacers last season.
The Boston Celtics got the point guard they were seeking Friday. Boston reportedly acquired Malcolm Brogdon in a trade with the Indiana Pacers, according to ...

One of the most notable trades of the NBA offseason so far was centered around former Virginia men's basketball star Malcolm Brogdon.
He captioned the post "One goal" with a trophy emoji: The defending Eastern Conference Champions will be an early favorite to make a return trip to the NBA Finals next season as they managed to land Brogdon while keeping their core of Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown, Marcus Smart, Al Horford, Robert Williams, as well as several key role players on the roster. We've collected some of the reactions from social media:
Brad Stevens is headed for the honor roll. The Celtics deal for Malcolm Brogdon is receiving high grades from outlets that grade trades.
The potential problem, of course, is his availability (or lack thereof). He’s averaged fewer than 50 games a season with Indiana. They’re not positioned to truly contend as currently constructed, so they get a first-rounder back in exchange for a veteran player who probably didn’t have a long-term future with the franchise. This move is a no-brainer for the Celtics, who get a legitimate playoff rotation piece in Brogdon in exchange for proverbial pennies. Synopsis: “The fact the Celtics were able to add two proven veterans in Brogdon, 29, and Gallinari, 33, without having to part with any of their core pieces is a major coup for them. It’s an ideal addition to a team that wanted more offensive punch without having to sacrifice anything on the defensive end (their great strength and fundamental identity).” Although this deal doesn’t yield the kind of draft-pick compensation the Pacers were probably hoping for, I understand getting value for Brogdon while it’s there.”
The Boston Celtics land Luke Kennard in a mock 3-team trade proposal from HoopsHabit that lands Kyrie Irving on the Los Angeles Clippers.
Boston has three second-round picks in 2023, so using one of them in a deal would hardly be a tough pill to swallow. It’s already been a busy offseason for the Boston Celtics, but it could get even busier. Kennard is worth taking on the extra salary for, luxury tax concerns not withstanding.
According to ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski, the Boston Celtics and Indiana Pacers made a big trade involving Malcolm Brogdon going to the Celtics.
- SHOULD THE BUCKS MAKE A TRADE? The Milwaukee Bucks lost Game 7 to the Boston Celtics, which officially ended their 2021-22 NBA season in the second-round. Last season, they won the NBA Championship, and they will now enter an offseason where they can look to improve the roster to get back to the NBA Finals.CLICK HERE. The Celtics made it all the way to the NBA Finals, but they lost in six games to the Golden State Warriors.

The next week or so will tell us more about how the 2022-23 Boston Celtics roster will look to start the season. Will ownership really greenlight the TAX on a level of the Golden State Warriors, Brooklyn Nets and LA Clippers? The tools are there to do one more really big move. If they will, then there are still a ton of options available to Boston via trade. The next need is a wing with size. First, the Celtics have reportedly agreed to sign Danilo Gallinari to the Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception of $6.5 million. That’s one roster spot, and it will probably be via a veteran minimum signing. Inclusive of Sam Hauser’s qualifying offer, the Boston Celtics are approximately $18.8 million over the luxury tax line. At least for the big $17.1 million TPE. There is a difference between paying the tax and paying the TAX. Right now, the Celtics are set to pay the tax. Trading Daniel Theis leaves the Celtics a bit thin up front. The free agent market is rapidly getting picked clean, but that could be another veteran minimum signing or a TPE target. And they also have both Two-Way spots open.
Boston's trade for the combo guard left people wondering if he would become the team's starting point guard. Read more on Boston.com.
That group didn’t have as high of a net rating in the playoffs, posting a 3.5 net rating as Williams, Horford, and Smart each missed time throughout the postseason. With the Pacers, Brogdon shot 44.7 percent from the field and 35.2 percent from 3-point range. He averaged 18.9 points and 6.3 assists in 146 games with the Pacers over three seasons as the team’s starting point guard. Brogdon didn’t shoot as well in Indiana, where he was the main initiator for the first time in his career, than he did in Milwaukee. Brogdon shot 48.4 percent from the field and 40.8 percent from 3-point range in his three seasons with the Bucks, joining the illustrious 50/40/90 club in his final season there. Smart’s role as the Celtics’ starting point guard came into question by several analysts following the NBA Finals, in which Boston failed to score 100 points in each of the last three games. “Just slowing the game down in those moments when we need to get a good shot.”
The Boston Celtics did a great job of protecting themselves with the 2023 first-round pick sent to the Pacers in the Malcolm Brogdon trade.
If the Celtics do send their 2023 first-rounder to the Pacers, which is by far the most likely outcome, they will go three consecutive years without owning their first-round pick. However, according to MassLive's Brian Robb, this selection is top-12 protected and would become a second-rounder if not conveyed next year. The chances of the Celtics landing a top 12 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft are incredibly slim, but you have to give Boston's president of basketball operations Brad Stevens credit for protecting the franchise in case of catastrophe.

“Still, Boston’s title window is open now and adding Brogdon improves the chances of Boston hanging an 18th banner at TD Garden.” “After All-Star Dejounte Murray, Brogdon is probably the second-best player to change teams so far this NBA offseason,” Pelton wrote. “Just slowing the game down in those moments when we need to get a good shot.” “Wishin my teammates Aaron, Malik, Nik, Juwan the very best,” Smart wrote. Welcoming a new teammate in a trade means you likely have to say goodbye to hold teammates, though. I’m going to Boston and not worrying about that.”
Then, the Celtics followed it up with a mini- blockbuster of a trade that sent out veteran big man Daniel Theis, reserve wing Aaron Nesmith, and deep rotation ...

Boston added Malcolm Brogdon and Danilo Gallinari in hopes of getting over the top. Read more on Boston.com.
In the opening 2023 NBA title odds released following the Celtics’ 2022 NBA Finals loss to the Warriors, many sportsbooks had a cluttering of teams at the top. The other title contenders grouped with the Celtics haven’t made any substantial additions so far this offseason. They might have done that, at least in the eyes of some.
ESPN expert Kevin Pelton has revealed his grades for the Celtics and Pacers after the surprising Malcolm Brogdon trade.
Turnovers proved fatal for the Celtics in the NBA Finals, and Brogdon has averaged only 1.8 turnovers per game over his career. Defense was certainly not the problem for Boston in the Finals. The Celtics lost to the Warriors because they lacked enough offensive depth and playmaking skill. If Brogdon supplants the smaller Payton Pritchard and Derrick White in the backcourt, those options will shrink further on the perimeter." "Brogdon can play off the ball to complement (Jaylen) Brown, (Marcus) Smart and Jayson Tatum handling it," Pelton wrote as part of his trade analysis. "Already, the Celtics' playoff rotations featured few openings for opponents to attack. In addition to his above-average 3-point shooting, he also ranks among the league's top free throw shooters.
John Tomase uses an Celtics vs. Pacers game from 2019 to explain how Malcolm Brogdon will help Boston improve in late-game scenarios.
