Philadelphia 76ers: P.J. Tucker's sizzle matches the smoke (Section 215)

Finally reunited with James Harden, Daryl Morey, and Danuel House, who also signed with the team via the BAE (more on that here), the Rockets East are coming ...

No, Tucker is the guy waiting for that open 3 and won’t hesitate to either take it or pass it without having to log a single dribble. He can switch onto any other player 1-5 without becoming a clear target for an opposing offense and won’t start to dribble around the free throw line before kicking the ball out to a quick trigger wing with a few seconds left on the clock. Though it isn’t particularly surprising, as, again, it was very well televised, that doesn’t make the addition of P.J. Tucker any less exciting. Are the Sixers going to start Tucker over Joel Embiid, let alone serve as his primary backup for something like 16-20 minutes per game? But soon, the team will have to turn their attention to finding the best roles for each of their new (role) players. Measuring in at 6-foot-5, 245 pounds, Tucker is built more like a heavyweight boxer than an NBA forward, and yet, when he’s down on the block, he puts that size to good use.

Sixers and P.J. Tucker expected to finalize three-year deal (NBC Sports)

The Sixers and P.J. Tucker are expected to finalize a three-year deal, a source confirmed Thursday night to NBC Sports Philadelphia. By Noah Levick.

He’s a low-usage, limited offensive player, but Tucker is glad to shoot open jumpers and made a career-high 41.5 percent of his threes last season. While thirty-seven isn’t old outside of basketball, age and health-related questions are valid for any NBA player in his late 30s. One of Tucker’s best attributes is that he’s exceptional in terms of both willingness and ability to defend stars. He’s played in 82 games on three occasions. Still, it’s obvious both Harden and All-Star Sixers big man Joel Embiid appreciate Tucker’s value outside of traditional box score statistics. At 37 years old, Tucker will be hoping to claim his second NBA title.

P.J. Tucker signs for three-year, $33.2 million with Philadelphia 76ers (Hot Hot Hoops)

After days of on-going speculation, P.J. Tucker, one of the Miami Heat's most important players from a year ago, has officially signed with the Philadelphia ...

Here were a few of the replacements I mentioned: - Harrison Barnes,Sacramento Kings(trade) Tucker, 37, was one of Miami’s most important because of his two-way versatility, toughness, and selfless mentality. The Heat were eligible to offer Tucker a three-year deal worth $27 million, and multiple reports indicated that they were willing to fully guarantee that three-year contract. - John Collins,Atlanta Hawks(trade) They were, however, unwilling to trigger the hard-cap — and understandably so — so they didn’t use their full mid-level exception.

The Heat have lost a big part of their defensive identity, and will now pivot as they attempt to improve a team that came one win short of the NBA Finals. It won't be easy, but the Heat have done this before. He and Morey couldn't figure out an extension when they were in Houston, but they found a middle ground in Philadelphia. The 76ers will sign Tucker using the non-taxpayer mid-level exception, which they opened up after James Harden opted out of his current contract to re-sign at a lower cap number than his player option would have generated.

He averaged 7.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game for Miami and shot 41.5% from three-point range. Schiffer mentions the Hawks, Timberwolves, Nets, Bulls and Sixers among the teams that plan to target Tucker, adding that they will offer either the non-taxpayers’ mid-level exception of $10.49MM, or in the case of the Nets and Hawks, the taxpayers’ MLE of $6.48MM. Atlanta could also make a trade to shed salary and get below the tax line, opening up the use of the full MLE. There will be significant interest in P.J. Tucker when free agency begins later today, and the veteran forward is considered unlikely to re-sign with the Heat, according to Alex Schiffer of The Athletic ( Twitter link).

Reports: P.J. Tucker, Daniel House agree to deals with 76ers (NBA.com)

Tucker and House reunite with former teammate James Harden in Philadelphia. Steve Aschburner. Archive. June 30, 2022 3:41 PM.

As part of his mission this offseason, Morey looks to enhance the roster to capitalize on All-Star center and Kia MVP runner-up Joel Embiid’s prime in pursuit of an NBA title. In the Rockets’ two seasons with all three players, they went 97-57 (.630) and reached the Western Conference semifinals each postseason. House, at 6-foot-6 and 220, is a little lither than Tucker but brings a similar 3-and-D game. Tucker, 37, reportedly has agreed to a three-year, $33.2 million fully guaranteed contract to join the Philadelphia 76ers, his fourth team in four seasons. His intent: Allow some payroll flexibility so Morey can enhance the Sixers roster before signing a new multi-year contract to begin this season. Free agent PJ Tucker is finalizing a three-year, $33.2 million fully guaranteed deal with the Philadelphia 76ers, his agent Andre Buck (@andrebuck14) told @TheAthletic @Stadium.

He signed a two-way contract with the squad on Dec. 18. The Sixers also added Trevelin Queen on a two-year contract that is partially guaranteed for $300,000 next season. House, 29, played 3½ seasons for the Rockets before being waived on Dec. 18. House used to play for the Delaware Blue Coats, the Sixers’ NBA G League affiliate. The Sixers also will add Danuel House to a two-year, $8.5 million deal. Tucker also has a physical presence on defense and can guard multiple positions while battling for rebounds. Nothing against what we have, it’s just the truth. But he ended up with $33.2 million guaranteed after Miami kept pursuing him. Harden, 32, spent a little over eight seasons with the Rockets before forcing a trade to the Brooklyn Nets on Jan. 13, 2021. You need those guys that are really tough.” We never have P.J. Tucker. That’s really what I’m trying say. Offensively, he creates a matchup problem for opposing post players as a small-ball post player.

Grading P.J. Tucker's $33M Deal With the 76ers (Sports Illustrated)

Philadelphia's deal with the veteran forward not only makes it a better team heading into next season, but makes a direct rival worse.

Push all your chips to the center now, and deal with any headaches after you’ve exhausted all routes to possibly winning a championship. Tucker will be 40 by the final postseason run of this contract. Teams don’t always respect his corner shot, but Tucker is ultimately staying on the floor during high-leverage moments. This is one of my favorite types of moves a contender can make: Improve your team while making a direct rival worse. Tucker previously played with Harden on the Rockets from 2017–21. Let’s grade the signing for Philly. Keith Pompey of the Philadelphia Inquirer was the first to report the parameters of a possible signing.

P.J. Tucker, Danuel House Jr. are exactly what 76ers' stars said they ... (The Athletic)

James Harden and Joel Embiid laid out what the 76ers needed to get to the next level. Philly's free-agent signings reflect their words.

Now the Sixers have to hammer out a contract with Harden, in addition to any other moves they make at the end of the roster. But the Sixers are giving a three-year contract to a player who will turn 37 during next season’s playoffs. The Sixers learned the hard way that one-way players are vulnerable in the postseason. He led the NBA in that category in three separate seasons. Now, it will be on Sixers coach Doc Rivers to meld the new signings’ skill-sets around Embiid, Maxey and an older Harden. A source told The Athletic that the Sixers are finalizing deals with these players with the two salary-cap exceptions that Harden’s newly trimmed salary allowed them to use. The Sixers are not going to stop any of these opposing stars. But teams win with two-way players in the playoffs, not those who can be exposed on defense (Niang) or offense (Thybulle) liabilities. With Green injured, the Sixers had a major positional need on the wing. But as the Sixers did last offseason in acquiring shooters Danny Green and Seth Curry, they have executed their offseason plan. With the extra maneuverability that move provided for president of basketball operations Daryl Morey and the front office, the Sixers will sign two players who fit the toughness and physicality bill: the aforementioned Tucker and Danuel House Jr., most recently of the Utah Jazz. He believes that he can get from Point A to Point B, and he believes that no one can beat him and he’s tough.

Who is P.J. Tucker? Introducing the newest Sixer and everything to ... (The Philadelphia Inquirer)

Tucker, a veteran forward with championship experience, agreed to a three-year contract with the Sixers when free agency opened Thursday evening.

As of 2020, he owned more than 5,000 pairs of shoes, which is believed to be one of the biggest collections in the world. Before that, Tucker played four-plus seasons with Houston, where he was a teammate of Harden’s. Sixers president of basketball operations Daryl Morey also ran the Rockets’ front office at the time. He is one of the best in the NBA at making corner three-pointers. Tucker was not even the oldest player on last season’s Heat roster. Since then, he has carved out a niche as a valuable role player for the Phoenix Suns, Toronto Raptors, Houston Rockets, Milwaukee Bucks, and Miami Heat. And he brings an intangible toughness that Embiid mentioned that the Sixers lacked at the end of last season.

Versatile PJ Tucker agrees to 3-year, $33.2 million deal to join Sixers (Sixers Wire)

The Philadelphia 76ers have agreed to a 3-year $33.2 million deal with PJ Tucker to pry him away from the Miami Heat.

The signing should also make Joel Embiid happy; he mentioned Tucker by name after the Heat eliminated the Sixers in the playoffs in May. He shot 39% from deep at those spots, which is in the 99th percentile per Cleaning the Glass. Tucker averaged 7.6 points and 5.5 rebounds while shooting 41.5% from deep in the 2021-22 season.

Sixers receive a grade of B-minus for P.J. Tucker free agency signing (Sixers Wire)

The Philadelphia 76ers received a B-minus for their addition of P.J. Tucker in free agency.

Philadelphia is not a team of the future. He makes up for that with his smarts and his physicality. Combine with his ability to knock down corner triples and his relationship with James Harden and he’s a great fit for Philadelphia.

Heat still searching for P.J. Tucker replacement as options continue ... (Miami Herald)

With free agent options dwindling, how will the Miami Heat fill the void P.J. Tucker left behind at power forward? And rookie Nikola Jovic's first ...

He’s not afraid to put the ball on the floor and try to get to the rim and take contact and he’s going to have the ability to shoot it. So yeah, he’s going to get the ball in his hands some and he’ll have opportunities to showcase that. Allen said the Heat won’t waste any time and plan to give Jovic on-ball reps early in summer league. NBA teams are allowed to carry up to 20 players under contract in the offseason and preseason, a total that does not include those on summer league contracts. The good news for the Heat is the punitive repeater tax (when a team is over the tax at least three times during a four-year period) is not currently a concern. That leaves the $6.5 million taxpayer midlevel exception as the Heat’s biggest resource to add a forward in free agency. At this point, it would be difficult for Miami to avoid the luxury tax if it used its full $6.5 million taxpayer midlevel exception. Aside from Durant, there are other intriguing options the Heat could turn to on the trade market. Caleb is the Heat’s restricted free agent, and Miami currently holds the right to match outside offers up to the $10.5 million midlevel exception to re-sign him. To fit that mold, it must be a forward who can space the floor with three-point shooting and play in the Heat’s switch-heavy defense. Using either the $10.5 million non-taxpayer midlevel exception, $4.1 million biannual exception or a sign-and-trade to acquire a player would hard cap the Heat at about $157 million. Durant reportedly has the Phoenix Suns and Heat as two of his preferred trade destinations.
