It also forced a shake-up of the 12 teams, part of LIV Golf's attempts at innovation into professional golf. And, finally, the top five finishers at the PGA’s annual Q-School will now receive automatic PGA status. It, much like the former president whose golf courses it’ll visit later this summer ( and whose son-in-law it’s also bankrolling), thrives in that environment, constantly moving the goal posts to create the illusion of success. That’s the plan. There is a rhythm to the PGA Tour from April-July, during the four majors. We’re talking about the guy whose entire identity has been about making clear that he doesn’t really like golf all that much but likes winning majors and making money, essentially. So without the PGA of America (and the DP World Tour, which runs the Europe team) loosening those restrictions, most likely by allowing LIV Golf participants to be captains' picks, it's pretty cut and dry. I’m not in the same boat as him anymore, and probably never will play golf with him again. The broadcast is run by LIV, for LIV. It's state-run propaganda and doesn't even try to hide it. And listening to him in the initial moments of the second event ... it's just sad. Really thought making his LIV debut he'd push for everyone to get out to a hot start, get some momentum going. That number is a sign they have work to do.

LIV Golf Portland live golf scores, results, highlights from Thursday's ... (Sporting News)

The Sporting News is tracking live scoring updates and highlights from the first day of LIV Golf's Portland event.

Players seem to be trying to figure Pumpkin Ridge out in the early going. 4:46 p.m. -- Ortiz closes out the second birdie to go 2 under. Wolff is trying to replace the ball in the correct position, and it looks like everything is fine. First it was a chip shot from the bunker that fell into the cup, then it was a solid putt. 5:35 p.m. -- Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed are still sitting at Par, while Phil Mickelson is lucky enough to stay even. He is now tied with Wiesberger and Perez atop the leaderboard. Mickelson misses a golden chance for birdie and he's still at 1 over. Louis Oosthuizen also birdies to get to 2 under, and Tanihara saves par to stay in the lead. 6 p.m. -- Newcomer Brooks Koepka has positioned himself atop the leaderboard at 2 under. 6:40 p.m. -- Sihwan Kim hits an eagle to bring his score down a more manageable one. Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed, and Pat Perez highlight newcomers to LIV Golf, as it continues to expand its footprint in the golf world. So far, there have been theatrics and fireworks ahead of the controversial tournament.

As LIV's golf revolution arrived in America, here's how it felt on the ... (Golf.com)

LIV Golf begins play at Pumpkin Ridge on Thursday, kicking off its first event in North America. Here's what that means.

The misconception about LIV itself is that it will never need to make money and exists merely as a vehicle for sportswashing. It’s not yet clear what that means for the competitive juice of its tournaments, nor what it means for golf fans, who are already feeling the effects of a fractured landscape. It’s remarkable how quickly and seamlessly the who’s-who of tournament golf infrastructure have adapted to a new tournament run by a new organization. That means the breakaway league is continuing to make gains on its initial objective: player acquisition. “I want to continue playing the PGA Tour, and I don’t see why they can’t coexist,” Gooch said. Others, like Patrick Reed, sound apathetic about a future on Tour. On Tuesday, Reed announced he’d resigned his Tour membership and didn’t mince words about leadership, either, suggesting they’d failed to “listen to the players” and ultimately brought this on themselves. The only consistent thing is not to worry about any of it. Off property, reaction to the tournament is more complex. “We’ve been banded together by all the scrutiny, by what other people think, and that creates some of this camaraderie,” said Talor Gooch. “And we also believe in this. That doesn’t mean it was an easy decision to be here in the first place. But if the scene at Pumpkin Ridge proves anything, it’s this: everyone at LIV is convinced it’s here to stay. To hear them tell it, the players are thrilled to be here.

Those who bolted the PGA Tour won't be wearing the red, white and blue when the U.S. faces Europe, Johnson said.

“I’ve been playing Ryder Cup golf since 1997, and the criteria has been to be a member of the European (DP World) Tour. Now, the criteria for being a member of the European Tour is to play four events. “There’s just a bit too much protection going on for my liking and not enough transparency. “In order to play on the Ryder Cup team whether you’re top 6 or a pick, you must garner Ryder Cup points through the PGA of America,” Johnson said. “I’ve been a member of the PGA Tour and still played four events on the European Tour, and why would the European Tour change their rules so dramatically because another tour doesn’t like it or feels financially threatened? “But that’s not going to depend on us now. “In order to garner Ryder Cup points through the PGA of America, you have to be a member of the PGA of America. Lynch: LIV Golf's unspoken secret — players are ripping off the Saudis (usatoday.com)

One can almost commiserate with MBS's fate as being hoodwinked into financing what amounts to welfare for wealthy, washed-up golfers.

Not much different than a grifter helping himself to the funds of an inattentive dupe. Or the hit-and-run killing of 15-year-old Fallon Smart not far from Pumpkin Ridge, where LIV Golf is staging an event this week. It’s proving awfully expensive to bankroll the bruised egos of Norman and Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the head of the PIF, who has bristled at the refusal of the PGA and DP World tours to indulge him. Even if one views it as an exercise in sportswashing where the only desired return is reputational, LIV Golf is proving a great white elephant, serving only to draw renewed attention to matters the Crown Prince might rather see forgotten. A threadbare piece of armchair analysis says the Saudis have a bottomless purse and can finance Norman’s folly in perpetuity. Consider the amount of someone else’s money that Greg Norman has been willing to bestow upon players whose potential is largely exhausted, limited or unrealized.

Brett Eagleson and 10 other members of 9/11 Justice are in Oregon and have asked to meet with Phil Mickelson and other members of the LIV Golf tour.

“I would invite Phil Mickelson and everyone else here to have a meeting with us,” Eagleson said. “While our local jurisdictions may not be able to prevent this event, we stand together to voice our concerns about the unwelcomed potential risks, visitors and harm this event could have on our communities.” The tournament is scheduled to end Saturday. After this weekend, LIV heads to Trump National Golf Club Bedminster in New Jersey on July 29. He just wants the golfers here to talk to them. Contacted earlier this week by USA TODAY Sports, Jeff Muller, the general manager of Pumpkin Ridge, declined to answer questions about the club’s decision to host LIV Golf. Escalante, meanwhile, did not return multiple requests for comment. The Fort Worth-based golf conglomerate bought Pumpkin Ridge in 2015. An Oregonian investigation published in 2019 detailed a pattern across eight states, plus Canada, of Saudi students facing criminal charges who managed to escape before their trials. Perez flexed that he had been shown the money while Fred Couples put him in his place as a "grain of sand in this Tour."

For me, yeah, I’ve earned every penny of it because we have to do it all the time,” he said. I’m kind of one of those lucky guys that I think I see it the right way,” he said. All Greg Norman had to do was show him the money. He went so far as to literally wear it proudly rather than hide behind the lark of ‘growing the game,’ or so many of the other sham justifications. Perez , to his credit, has managed to keep his card all these years despite just three PGA Tour wins, sometimes just squeaking inside the top 125. However, Perez in his money shirt would make a fitting personal logo or better yet a perfect representation for all of LIV Golf.

They shared stories of their loved ones at a North Plains press conference and accused the Saudi regime of engaging in "sportswashing."

“We understand and respect that not everyone will agree with us, but we believe deeply that golf is a force for good and we look forward to continuing our efforts to grow the game, in the U.S. and around the world.” “Golf is a force for good that entertains and teaches the values of fair play, competition, and excellence through hard work,” the statement read. LIV also plans to have 48 players contracted to play all 14 events next year, with permanent team captains that can recruit their own teams and make trades—a stark contrast from this inaugural season, which has and will continue to feature a rotating cast of players with more expected to sign with the Saudi-backed venture.

What matters to the golf viewer is the test provided and the tournament that follows. That matters to the players and their investment advisers, regardless of how dirty the money might be. But as they begin a round that determines who wins $4 million for coming in first and who takes $120,000 for placing last, the leaders tee off from the first hole at the same time those in seventh through ninth tee off from the second. I want to play against the best in the world in a format that’s been going on for hundreds of years. Players who win a PGA Tour event in the year since the last Masters gain entry. But start with that fact, and go back to what Jon Rahm — the Spaniard ranked second in the world who has pledged his loyalty to the PGA Tour — said before the U.S. Open. It rang true at the time. LIV Golf can’t be expected to have history in a month’s time. Each of these players has signed up to take money from a murderous regime, and that colors the entire entity. The leaders play the course as it’s meant to be played: The starting hole means something; the finishing hole means something else. But as a product that raises the hairs on the backs of necks? It’s important to constantly keep in mind the source of LIV’s extensive — indeed, almost endless — wealth and funding: the Saudi Arabian government. I wish many of them had been as keen to play on our Tour then as they seem to be now, based on the fact they have either resigned their membership of the PGA Tour or, if they are still in membership, have been suspended indefinitely. Pelley responded: "The letter claims that these players 'care deeply' for the DP World Tour. An analysis of the past participation statistics on our Tour in recent years of several of the leading players named, suggests otherwise. The U.S.-based PGA Tour, which announced a 13-year partnership with the DP World Tour this week, has suspended players for joining the breakaway circuit. Indeed, as one player named in the letter said in a media interview earlier this year; 'If they ban me, they ban me.' It is not credible that some are now surprised with the actions we have taken." "That the DP World Tour top performers will now earn PGA Tour cards serves only to solidify the DP World Tour as second fiddle to the PGA Tour and depletes the DP World Tour's top rising talent even further," the letter said. The players said in the letter that the alliance would have a negative impact on DP World Tour players.

More stories from the families were going to be in your face. I wish many of them had been as keen to play on our tour then as they seem to be now, based on the fact they have either resigned their membership of the PGA Tour or, if they are still in membership, have been suspended indefinitely.” Pelley first addressed the idea that the defectors “truly care” about the former European Tour. “An analysis of the past participation statistics on our tour in recent years of several of the leading players named, suggests otherwise,” Pelley countered. In the letter the group took umbrage with Pelley’s decision to suspend those who participated in the inaugural LIV Golf event in London and ridiculed the DP World Tour’s joint venture with the PGA Tour, saying the move made the Old World circuit a “second fiddle” to the American-based tour.

First LIV Golf champion Charl Schwartzel made more money in three ... (USA TODAY)

Charl Schwartzel, the 2011 Masters champion, won inaugural LIV Golf Series event and earned $4.75 million. That's more than he made in any full year.

"I just feel I've got a lot of stuff in my favor I didn't have even when I was playing well. "It was a very clever play," Brian said. But he said last year was the first time in a long time he was injury-free. Since then, he's made 54 starts on the PGA Tour with just seven top 10 finishes. Schwartzel played it safe, knowing a bogey would win the tournament. Schwartzel has been focusing on golf since he started dominating the amateur ranks in South Africa, along with his friend Oosthuizen, whom he has known for 37 years. That was more than he had made in any one year in two decades on the PGA Tour, including 2011 when he won the Masters. In 2010, Schwartzel got into the WGC event at Doral and asked Ernie if the offer still stood. "Especially at my age." There's a lot of money out there and it's more than any guy has ever played for." He is aware of what has happened in Saudi Arabia. But his comfort zone and escape is golf. Brian, a longtime professional golfer in South Africa, also is Charl's manager.
