Some of the organizers of the “Freedom Convoy” blockade and the following “Rolling Thunder” protests this spring have vowed to return to the capital on Friday, with police and the public bracing for the possibility of those protesters staying through the weekend. Not all cities will be returning to staging major events, however. Cities are also bracing for protests — particularly Ottawa, where residents continue to grapple with what police have acknowledged is “lingering trauma” from the convoy blockade earlier this year.

The TTC will be operating on a holiday schedule for Canada Day while GO Transit will be adhering to its Saturday schedule. The city’s main Canada Day celebrations are planned for both Mel Lastman Square in North York and Thompson Memorial Park in Scarborough. The festivities at Mel Lastman Square run from 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. and will include live music, dance performances, family-friendly activities and food vendors. The celebration at Thomson Memorial Park runs from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and activities include a pancake breakfast, a sound stage with a DJ, bouncy castles and face painting. The city’s StrollTO program offers free self-guided walking itineraries in more than 140 neighbourhoods across the city. “I can tell you that the police have learned from those kinds of experiences,” Mayor John Tory said of the Victoria Day weekend violence during an interview with CP24 this week. I think certainly the chief has my full support in making sure that anybody who's engaged in that kind of act is brought to justice and dealt with because it is just not something that is acceptable in a city like this or anywhere.” Here is the full list of closures. it is unclear if this will have an impact on the Canada Day fireworks. Here is the full list. All fireworks displays start at 10 p.m. It is going to be scorcher with Environment Canada forecasting a daytime high of 30 C, though the humidex will make it feel like 35.

For Canada Day, a Politely Passionate Defense of Canadian Whisky (InsideHook)

Drops of these bottlings are few and far between, but well worth the price of a plane ticket. It’s 100% single pot still rye with immediate notes of earth that leads into a subtle apple sweetness. There’s a bourbon-ish sweetness, with mellow notes of toasted pecan, vanilla, coconut and citrus. It’s got the signature rye spice of cardamom and coriander, plus a full body that makes it a stellar base for cocktails. These factors give the distillers and blenders a huge amount of autonomy — space to run wild with blends, ages, grains and barrels. This Calgary distillery has been making some of the world’s most category-defining rye for over 75 years. One example of Canadian whisky’s quirkiness is this high-corn whisky finished in rum barrels. To be declared a “craft” spirit, the distillery must ferment its own base alcohol and use only raw agricultural material grown in the province. While American whiskey is distilled from a mashbill (for example, Jack Daniel’s mostly follows 80% corn, 8% rye and 12% malted barley), Canadian whisky is fermented, distilled and matured separately…then blended to make the final product. It ensures that you’re picking the best quality spirit to make the finished product — you’re checking the barrels for quality and exploring what you can do at the blending stage. Keep an eye out for their aged expressions, including a 10-year-old single malt aged in barrels smoked with driftwood for a salty, iodine twang. Canadian whiskies don’t require mash bills or age statements on their labels — they are only required to have a minimum age of three years in barrel.

Canada Day yesterday (the 155th anniversary of the British North America Act giving birth to the Canadian confederation) was celebrated early here last Tuesday with a reception in Teatro San Martín – perhaps to split the difference between Canada Day and La Fete de Saint-Jean-Baptiste, Québec’s biggest festival, on June 24. President Alberto Fernández and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently renewed their acquaintance at the G7 summit in Bavaria. Sirrs highlighted the bilateral relations and common values between the two countries in keeping with the event’s title: “Over 80 years of friendship” (it should be borne in mind that Canada did not gain full control of its foreign affairs until the Statute of Westminster in 1931). The common ground ranged from defence of human rights and gender equality to both countries participating in the Qatar World Cup at the end of the year.
