“And now more than ever, we need New York to …hold the line.” Zeldin says New York is at a “breaking point” and high costs and taxes have led to rising outmigration. And she vowed to continue the fight, saying she won’t let “right wing extremists” win.

Does Lee Zeldin Stand a Chance Against Kathy Hochul? (New York Magazine)

It's shaping up to be a good year for Republicans nationally, but that may only go so far in New York.

For much of his time in office, Cuomo resided in Westchester, but he grew up in Queens and his family name was royalty among city Democrats. Hochul will have to hustle to generate enthusiasm in places where voting for a Cuomo was reflexive. Zeldin will also have to hope that turnout is anemic in New York City, where most Democrats will not have any competitive elections to vote for beyond the governor’s race. It’s plausible that turnout in the five boroughs could be lower than usual in November. Hochul is from the Buffalo area and is not well known in the vote-rich boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, though she has been visiting them more frequently. Both Hochul and Zeldin, implicitly and explicitly, have blamed reforms of the state’s criminal-justice laws for a pandemic-era crime spike that is still consuming nightly news broadcasts. Like recent Republican contenders, he will face incredibly long odds in a state that has a hefty Democratic registration advantage and a history of rejecting those who have aligned themselves with the right-wing national party. Zeldin’s close alliance with Donald Trump — he voted against certifying the results of the 2020 election and defended the Capitol insurrection — is almost certainly going to cost him with Democrats and independents.

Lee Zeldin wins New York GOP governor primary (Washington Times)

Rep. Lee Zeldin prevailed in New York's Republican gubernatorial primary and will now face Gov. Kathy Hochul, who won the Democratic primary, in November.

Mr. Giuliani was barred from participating in person for refusing to submit proof he’s been vaccinated against COVID-19. Ultimately, Ms. Hochul tapped Rep. Antonio Delgado, a former two-term member of Congress, to be her new lieutenant governor and running mate to go up against progressive activist Ana Maria Archila, who was Mr. Williams’ running mate, and former New York City Council Member Diana Reyna, who was running with Mr. Suozzi. The scandal left Ms. Hochul without a lieutenant governor and running mate to go up against her own primary challengers, Mr. Williams and Mr. Suozzi, who represents New York’s 3rd District. Around this time, the Republican gubernatorial primary field had grown, and Mr. Zeldin, Mr. Giuliani and Mr. Astorino were contending with businessman Harry Wilson, a candidate who joined the Republican primary in February - a week before Republicans gathered in Garden City to establish their preferred slate of candidates at their convention. By November, Mr. Cuomo had resigned from office in disgrace and both Republicans needed to re-position their campaign messaging to target a different Democrat after Ms. Hochul, who had been Mr. Cuomo’s lieutenant governor, was sworn in as New York’s first female governor in August 2021. However, Mr. Benjamin’s scandal provided plenty of campaign fodder for both Mr. Williams and Mr. Suozzi to use against Ms. Hochul, as she and the Democratic majority state legislature passed bills to change the election rules, so Mr. Benjamin’s name would not be on the primary ballot this month. Ms. Hochul, a former one-term member of Congress, tapped then-State Sen. Brian Benjamin to be her lieutenant governor that month, and Mr. Benjamin was sworn in Sept. 9, 2021, but his term did not last very long. By this April, he resigned in disgrace after being ensnared in a bribery scandal and was charged by authorities on multiple counts for alleged illegal fundraising actions, while he was a lawmaker in Albany. Mr. Benjamin pleaded not guilty and denied any wrongdoing. The younger Mr. Giuliani also worked as an aide in former President Trump’s White House and later as a commentator on the TV network Newsmax. Mr. Zeldin has an uphill battle in New York. The party has not held the governor’s mansion in New York since George E. Pataki won two terms between 1995 and 2006, and registered Democrats outnumber registered Republicans in the state by a two-to-one margin. And 62% of those independent voters say the state is on the wrong track, according to the survey. Ms. Hochul cruised to a victory called by the Associated Press within 35 minutes of the polls closing, with 20% of the primary vote reporting.

Her path to securing the nomination seemed breezy. “She’s a walking identity crisis, to be honest.”

Hochul and Zeldin wasted little time going on the attack after winning their respective primaries.

Andrew Giuliani and Rob Astorino, who ran against Zeldin, have already come out to support the nominee for the general election. She's been pandering to a far left in this state. And by this point, it was clear her opponent in November would be Rep. Lee Zeldin, a Long Island Republican who cruised to victory in the GOP race. As of February, New York state was home to 11.9 million active registered voters. “She's a walking identity crisis, to be honest. During his victory speech, Zeldin made clear he intends to focus on curbing a rise in crime – including a push to repeal the state’s cashless bail reforms – and pocketbook issues, such as taxes and the rising costs of consumer goods.

New York's governor race set for clash over guns and abortion (Politico)

Republicans have lost each of the past 24 statewide elections. Kathy Hochul stands with Antonio Delgado during their primary election night party.

And she’ll have more campaign money to drive home her points in the heavily Democratic state. And with the Supreme Court ruling to overturn Roe v. “Let me say it loud and clear: Abortion rights aren’t going anywhere, not while I’m your governor,” Hochul exclaimed. He has focused on the issue of rising crime rates throughout his campaign, including when he selected former NYPD commander Alison Esposito as his running mate. Zeldin will have to pull some of those voters, alongside the entire Republican electorate, in order to triumph. Wade, the issue will be front and center more than ever. The 45th president remains deeply unpopular in his home state, as are many of Zeldin’s other well-documented positions, including those on guns and abortion. ALBANY, N.Y. — Republican leaders in New York have spent over a year touting Rep. Lee Zeldin as their best hope to recapture the executive branch. Zeldin faces the daunting task of challenging incumbent Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul in November after they each emerged victorious from their respective primaries Tuesday night. “But we are not powerless. Rights and freedoms that we fought for and secured once before, we have to secure again,” she said during her victory speech. The landscape hasn’t gotten any better for Republicans from an enrollment perspective.

For N.Y. Governor, Lee Zeldin and Hochul Will Face Off in the Fall (The New York Times)

Gov. Kathy Hochul cruised to victory in the Democratic race but could face a tough fight in November.

Her lawyers asked for a new trial on the grounds that she had been denied a fair and impartial jury. Neither were others who had been in his orbit, among them Prince Andrew, who not only settled a lawsuit with one of Maxwell’s accusers but was stripped of the title “His Royal Highness” and his honorary military titles. He’s annoyed about the rats on the block and hires a friend to plant his front yard each spring. That evening, a guy who hangs around the bodega nearby came around with a mango box. The first time I met my Brooklyn neighbor, he was sitting outside with a friend, cigar in hand, on a hot July evening. Hochul, the state’s first female governor, stood, symbolically, under a glass ceiling at a victory party in Manhattan. “To the women of New York,” she declared, “this one’s for you.” The sentencing served as a bookend to a lurid case that spotlighted a world where the halo of glamour concealed the routine infliction of intimate, life-changing cruelty. On Tuesday, saying that “the damage done to these young girls was incalculable,” Judge Alison Nathan sentenced Maxwell to 20 years in prison. Ghislaine Maxwell, once a fixture in New York’s social scene, was a longtime companion of Jeffrey Epstein, who killed himself after his arrest on sex trafficking charges in 2019. In the evening, it will be mostly clear with temperatures around the high 60s. As my colleague Nicholas Fandos writes, Hochul’s victory set the stage for a potentially bruising fall campaign against Representative Lee Zeldin, a conservative congressional ally of former President Donald Trump who defeated three other Republicans in their primary. Gov. Kathy Hochul cruised to victory in the Democratic primary.

How Zeldin's Anti-Abortion Stance May Affect the N.Y. Governor's ... (The New York Times)

Representative Lee Zeldin, the Republican candidate for governor, said the decision to overturn Roe v. Wade was a victory for family, life and the ...

But the poll suggested he had managed to thread a sticky needle for a Republican in a state where his primary voters opposed abortion but the vast majority of residents believe women have a right to end a pregnancy. The issue is unquestionably a difficult one for Republicans to navigate in New York, where primary voters tend to prefer more socially conservative candidates, but the general electorate tilts more leftward. When Mr. Pataki was still in office, his political staff conducted a poll asking voters to identify his views on abortion. Flush with millions of dollars to spend on campaign ads, Ms. Hochul and her Democratic allies are not trying to hide their strategy. Those issues have helped drive Republicans to victory in Democrat-friendly turf in Virginia, New Jersey and parts of New York over the last year. Yet in his own victory speech, that Republican opponent, Representative Lee Zeldin, had not a single word to say about the decision to overturn Roe v. The model helped Mr. Pataki win three terms. Since then, New Yorkers have never elected a governor who opposes legalized abortion, and they remain overwhelmingly supportive of abortion rights. Wade was a victory for family, life and the Constitution. Only seven states, and the District of Columbia, were more supportive. The results showed that about a third of voters believed Mr. Pataki was for abortion rights, about a third thought he was opposed and the rest said they had no idea. Those positions have won him top marks from anti-abortion groups.

On the issue of working across the aisle, Zeldin said he would like to see the Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Support Project, a veterans mental health program from the state, be made permanent. On public safety, Zeldin wants to repeal some of the criminal justice reforms passed in recent years, including the HALT Act, which limits the use of solitary confinement, and the Less is More Act, which made changes to the state’s parole system. Zeldin is looking to become the first Republican to win statewide since George Pataki won a final term as governor in 2002.

How NY Republican nominee Lee Zeldin could win against Kathy ... (New York Post)

Republican gubernatorial nominee Lee Zeldin faces big disadvantages as he embarks on his general election campaign against Democratic Gov.

“We have to get disaffected cross-over votes and that’s what’s happening when you have a situation like this. “To Zeldin, this race is about inflation, taxes, and crime. “But the task of pulling off what would be the upset of this new century [in state politics] is undoubtedly daunting,” he added. To Hochul, it’s about abortion, guns, and January 6. “While he’s a long shot, he’s not a no shot,” Larry Levy, executive dean of the National Center for Suburban Studies at Hofstra University, told The Post. “If that was a winning formula, Terry McAuliffe would be governor of Virginia right now,” New York State GOP Chair Nick Langworthy said, referring to the 2021 win by Republican Glenn Youngkin in a state that had leaned left in previous elections.
