'Earthquake swarm' in South Carolina: State shook by 2 of its ... (USA TODAY)

South Carolina was rocked by several earthquakes Wednesday, including the two strongest quakes yet in a "swarm" of earthquakes.

"Swarms happen in all seismic regions and the earthquakes continue until they stop," Jones tweeted. Such swarms are familiar occurrences in more earthquake-prone areas, but less common in the South. The quakes are the most powerful to hit the state in years, and at least one of Wednesday's tremblers could be felt near Charlotte, North Carolina, according to reports published by the United States Geological Survey.

Parts of the Midlands in South Carolina experienced a 3.33 magnitude earthquake in Elgin on afternoon of June 29, the United States Geological Survey ...

The U.S. Geological Survey said a sequence of small quakes started Dec. 27, 2021, with a 3.3 magnitude quake near Lugoff and Elgin. Five of the earthquakes exceeded 3.0 and “were widely felt,’’ the survey said on its website. The earthquakes were at relatively shallow depths, the survey said. Some theories have centered on whether blasting from mines or seepage from lakes was triggering the quakes, but geologists have been skeptical of that. That quake occurred just under four miles east of Elgin, a small community on the northeastern outskirts of Columbia. Regardless, more small earthquakes would not be surprising, he said. Smaller earthquakes are sometimes more noticeable in the eastern United States. Shaking from eastern quakes “extends greater distances from the epicenter’’ than earthquakes of the same size in the western United States, the survey reports. Several small aftershocks occurred after the 7 p.m. earthquake. Geologists say it is not unusual for South Carolina to experience earthquakes of the size felt recently, but the number of quakes since late last year is unusual. The afternoon quake Wednesday was initially recorded as a magnitude 3.33, but was subsequently revised up to 3.5, according to the S.C. Emergency Management Division. The quakes occurred about three days after an earthquake with a magnitude of 3.4 also was recorded in Elgin. The United States Geological Survey confirmed that a magnitude 3.5 earthquake shook parts of the Midlands just before 3 p.m. The earthquake was centered 3 miles east of Elgin, at 2:43 p.m.

An intensity of 5 is when you could start to see loose objects fall, White said. Man, that’s like a horror story on TV.” They can happen, but they are quite rare, he said. He said most of the earthquakes in the Elgin area have been about a 4 in terms of intensity. That is because, according to White, in the geological record there are almost never foreshocks, which are earthquakes that precede larger earthquakes in the same location. AUGUSTA, Ga. - Two earthquakes Wednesday in the Columbia, S.C., area were felt as far away as Augusta.

USGS: 7 earthquakes rattle SC, among strongest since 2014 (WMBF)

The USGS said the quake happened about three miles east of Elgin, where a lot of seismic activity has been reported since last December.

There were also reports of the quake being felt in areas of Darlington County, according to WMBF First Alert Chief Meteorologist Jamie Arnold. There were also reports of the quake being felt in surrounding areas such as Columbia, Irmo, Lexington and even as far away as Augusta, Georgia. The fifth, a magnitude 3.6 quake, was reported at 7:03 p.m. After initially being reported as a magnitude 3.34, the USGS revised its report - marking the strongest earthquake felt in South Carolina since 2014. The first, a magnitude 3.5 earthquake in South Carolina was confirmed at around 2:45 p.m. by the United States Geological Survey. It was initially reported as a magnitude 3.33 quake but was later revised by the USGS to a magnitude 3.5. A magnitude 2.1 aftershock was also felt where the quake occurred, followed by a third magnitude 1.88 quake at around 4 p.m. and a fourth magnitude 1.51 being reported shortly after that. The Elgin area has been the center of seismic activity in the state since last December, with over 40 earthquakes now being reported since then.
