Coach Pop says all the time, ‘Get over yourself. He was officially named Spurs team video coordinator from 2013-15, after which he was promoted to assistant coach. On Tuesday, the Jazz were also reportedly set to bring aboard longtime NBA coach David Fizdale, but not to Hardy’s coaching staff. And then he hung up on me.’” They also skipped on hiring someone with explicit ties to superstar guard Donovan Mitchell, like former Jazz assistant coach Johnnie Bryant, or to Rudy Gobert, like current Jazz assistant coach Alex Jensen.

Utah entered the 2021 playoffs with the NBA's best record, and when Kawhi Leonard got hurt in Game 4 of their second-round series against the Clippers, they looked like a shoo-in for the Western Conference finals. However, he eventually decided to resign and take a year off of coaching, and that forced the Jazz to scramble. The Jazz had been led by Quin Snyder for the previous eight seasons, and early in the offseason, it looked like he would make it nine.

“In the ongoing NBA parlor game “Who’s Going to Succeed Pop?” San Antonio assistant Will Hardy is a morning line favorite. “If I wanted the post-ups or pick-and-rolls or to know why we sucked at something last night, he’d come in and say, ‘Well, look, this is what they did.’ He’d break it down for me.” “I asked if there were any players there that showed an affinity toward coaching, or seem to have a natural ability.

"Brett Brown, when I worked with him in the video room, I sat in his office all day and almost watching him go through his process, asking him questions, he'd ask me questions and starting to learn how he was getting to his answers, how he was evaluating a team we were going to play, and how he was figuring out what he was going to do for the game plan. Utah won 49 games this season and Snyder went 372-264 with the Jazz. Sacramento hired Brown, the Los Angeles Lakers hired Darvin Ham, Charlotte brought back Steve Clifford for a second stint and now the Jazz are turning their team over to the 34-year-old Hardy, who is younger than some players in the NBA. If he learns as he makes contact and/or whiffs, that can be the most critical piece of all. If Hardy is ready, it will bubble up to the surface. Celtics star Jayson Tatum praised the hire, calling Hardy “extremely deserving.” But the guys he will coach now, all of whom have been coached by a multitude of mentors in the past, including most recently one of the brightest basketball minds on the planet, will be dialed in, observing him closely, coming to their own judgments as to whether he knows what he’s doing, whether they can rely on him in important moments in significant games, whether they can trust him, whether he puts them in the right position at the right time to win and win and win.
