While technically not a tenant of the Arconia, Alice (Delevingne) spends a lot of time with one of the key residents of the building, as she becomes quite close ...
Lucy (and Colletti) is a welcomed addition to the Arconia, if only for a little while. Only Murders in the Building did extremely well to create rich characters who all have their own mysteries and subplots. Rapaport’s injection of street-level Upper East Side edge is a great balance with the softer, affluent socialites who live in the Arconia. Alice notices the mural work Mabel spent all of last season working on and decides to invite Mabel to become a new key member of Alice’s commune of artists. Throughout the show, Short is often the biggest personality in the room, or sometimes it’s the quirkiness of the side characters that steal the show, but in the first minute MacLaine’s Leonora is introduced, the scene becomes hers. Cameos from the likes of comedians Tina Fey, Jane Lynch, Nathan Lane, and musical legend Sting rounded out a solid cast of quirky supporting characters living in the Arconia.

The show is less subtle when it comes to Mabel, who, at Alice’s behest, destroys a sculpture of herself to tear down the past, I guess? Alice is supposed to be an intriguing new romantic prospect for Mabel ( not hard to see why), but she recalls Oscar in certain ways (she’s much better dressed, though). We don’t know if she’s good for Mabel, and she’s definitely hiding something. That line offers some of the smartest and subtlest commentary on the true-crime genre in the season so far. She knows exactly what she wants out of life — a painting, a cocotini (made with coconut liqueur, not, as Howard thinks, chocolate), a lover — and she goes after it. When Oliver goes off on one of his name-dropping binges, Mabel provides the perfect button for the moment: “Okay, you must ask permission to tell stories from now on.” And Charles’ typically crisp pronunciation makes “Is that a shadow or a tiny bit of his balls?” one of the funniest line readings so far. Selena Gomez, Martin Short, and Steve Martin are one of the best ensembles on TV right now, and it’s a joy to watch their characters alternately bicker and support one another. The season-two premiere of Only Murders in the Building went out of its way to reassure audiences that this is the same show we fell in love with last year, piling on the in-world references like so much hummus on a chip. (She should’ve asked her Trainwreck co-star LeBron James for tips.) That said, I would probably watch a show where she tries to play Amy Ryan while little Timothée Chalamet does his best Martin Short. Last season, Tim Kono’s backstory was revealed gradually: parts of his childhood, the life-altering decision he made as a young adult, his quest to make things right, and finally, his death at the hands of his ex, Jan. The Arconia was the site of it all, and the place where he redeemed himself after betraying his good friend Oscar. This building is so much more than a backdrop for tragicomedy; it’s a world unto itself, and it has an even bigger role to play in season two. He was there when his father was arrested, dragged out of that same building near the Arconia in a blood-stained shirt. The story of Bunny Folger, we’re told, is tied to that of the Arconia itself, but in a much more direct way than for the other residents. What was once just lively meta-humor is beginning to feel apologetic, especially now that there’s a whole other team of podcasters (admittedly, Cinda Canning et al.

The brilliance of this show is that you want to solve the mystery as if it were a thriller, but you get all the pleasure of it being a comedy, too. Putting the art world into the story makes for an easy target when it comes to satire, and as with Only Murders’ generation-gap comedy, it can be ever so slightly obvious. There are flashbacks and period episodes, and still, there is room for slapstick involving a knife. Mabel becomes internet-famous and is nicknamed Bloody Mabel, which leads to some interesting riffs on notoriety (and reminded me of the much-missed Search Party). This second season, not as finely balanced as the first but still a lot of fun, pulls at those loose ends until they unravel, then unravels them more. The meta murder mystery was an elegant charmer that combined a meaty crime plot, New York’s crotchety appeal, good physical comedy – watching Steve Martin roll around in a lift for half an hour is a total delight – and a sly self-awareness, all of which made for a classy debut.
Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez don't miss a beat in getting back on the case in the second season of the Hulu series.
Plus, they have new cameos to spice up the proceedings, like Amy Schumer as Amy Schumer, who immediately pitches the beyond-receptive Oliver on the idea of transforming the podcast into a limited series, because, well, showbiz. While the show perhaps inevitably doesn't feel quite as fresh this second time around, it gets plenty of mileage out of those small touches and the general obsession with true crime. Having solved the murder that occupied their first adventure, the unlikely trio of Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short) and Mabel (Selena Gomez) turn their attention to the next one of their neighbors to turn up dead.
Second, the show is the brainchild of Steve Martin, along with screenwriters Dan Fogelman and John Hoffman. It has an old school vibe in how the show is ...
Filming for the second season of Only Murders in the Building began in December 2021 and continued into January 2022. It’s one of the few buildings in New York City large enough to have an interior courtyard where a car can enter and make a loop around, similar to the Apthorp and Graham Court, real estate projects on the Upper West Side also backed by the Astors. All three have a palazzo-like exterior architecture, imposing front gates, and an open-air courtyard to bring in light to the apartments. The fictional name “The Arconia” certainly evokes the apartment names of the period and is quite close to The Ansonia, another Upper West Side apartment building completed just a few years before The Belnord (and is featured in a black and white photograph in the Arconia lobby). Graham Court was also featured as a filming location in Mozart in the Jungle. Untapped New York writer Julia Vitullo-Martin, who resides in The Belnord, says that only the exteriors and the courtyard were used for the show and the scenes in the elevator. When a horrific death takes place inside their building, the trio believe it to be a murder and start a podcast of their own, Serial style, called “Only Murders in the Building” which unveils the secrets of the building and the current case. And now, here are the filming locations for “Only Murders in the Building”! As any true crime aficionado will tell you, it’s the boondocks you need to worry about.” Guest stars in include Tina Fey, Sting, Nathan Lane and more.
Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez return for another marvelous, madcap season of mystery in "Only Murders in the Building."
The central trio is more adept in comedic timing, but the new episodes feel more like a continuation than a new chapter. Seeking to clear their names even as they try to move on with their lives, Mabel, Oliver and Charles resurrect their true-crime podcast for a new season and look into what happened to Bunny. The investigation takes surprising turns that reveal big secrets from their pasts, from the dalliances of Charles' father to Mabel's alleged history of violence. It's still a dull and dreary New York winter in the world of "Only Murders," but this singularly congenial show has an uncanny ability to lift your spirits even as it deals with death and mayhem.
Inevitably, Mabel and her crime-solving partners, Oliver (Martin Short) and Charles (Steve Martin) found themselves as suspects in her death and Season 2 begins ...
Schumer, who has grand plans to play Jan (Amy Ryan) in her TV adaptation of Oliver's podcast, found the painting outside but it turns out, the painting is a replica. As part of her first episode, Cinda drops dome truth bombs about Mabel, Charles, and Oliver including the fact Charles's father was in-and-out of prison and Oliver, has left behind a trail of hate mail he once wrote to Bunny, painting them both not entirely in the best light. Schumer is playing an exaggerated version of herself in the series, hoping to buy the rights to Oliver's podcast, Only Murders in the Building, to turn it into an "eight to ten episode streaming series with exclusive internet content leading to gamification." Charles also learns something about the artist in question, it turns out, that his father and Rose were having an affair. The most exciting thing to happen in the new series so far is when Oliver meets Schumer in The Arconia elevator. Season 2 picks up immediately from the cliffhanger ending of Season 1, which saw Arconia Board Manager Bunny (played by Jayne Houdyshell) found stabbed to death in Mabel's (Selena Gomez) apartment.
A review of the second season of Only Murders in the Building, now streaming on Hulu.
As such, Nina is the perfect encapsulation of “Only Murders in the Building.” She’s a complex, vulnerable human, worthy of our sympathy even as she clearly chooses the wrong path at times. Of course, we also meet new residents, notably Nina Lin ( Christine Ko), the pregnant powerhouse set to take the murdered Bunny’s role as Board President of the Arconia. She plays a sympathetic villain, learning from the best of Bunny’s legacy and figuring out the daunting task of new motherhood on one hand. "Only Murders in the Building" is careful to bring back the audience’s favorite supporting characters and devices from the first season. The show spends its time with everyone wisely, reminding us why we so enjoyed these characters to begin with and adding layers to our understanding of them. Again, we get episodes from different perspectives, dipping in and out of the lives of the Arconia's residents. Amy Schumer says that line a few minutes into the second season of Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” playing a Diane Keaton-costumed version of herself.

“I’m always hoping that I can keep up with them,” added Gomez. “The goal is to always just try to make a joke, and I do ask if they think something is funny, and if they don’t, they are honest with me. “I must say she's a quick learner,” Short chimed in. I do feel like I get to learn a lot.” People who would rather stay low key and away from things are coming out of their own isolated worlds working for justice or some redemption for a neighbor and that's inspiring. I taught her well.’” Now a bona fide breakout hit, the show has no choice but to acknowledge the risk of a sophomore slump, as Martin explained on the red carpet for the season premiere event in Los Angeles on Monday night.

In Episode 2, Leonora reveals that Rose went missing in the ’50s and was soon declared dead… And she expresses interest in Mabel’s mural of the Arconia’s many eccentric residents, which includes Bunny. In Episode 2, it is confirmed that Alice is familiar with Rose Cooper. Perhaps she’d like to get her hands on a one-of-a-kind painting? We see her struggle to slice a wedge of cheese, but could this be for show? Later at Bunny’s memorial, he has nothing nice to say about the new board president, and does his best to suck up to Leonora. ♦ Uma Heller: Lives in Apt. 3F. She has a key to Bunny’s apartment. This begs the question: Did Bunny have a replica hanging in her bedroom, or did the killer who stole the painting have a copy made to frame the Only Murders trio? “If you thought Bunny was a bitch, wait until you get a load of this one.” In the present day, Charles tells Leonora that his dad spent time in jail and died when he was just a boy. ♦ On the night of Bunny’s murder, Mabel entered her apartment to find that Bunny had already been impaled with her knitting needle. Rejuvenated by this little exercise, and clearly attracted to her new friend, Mabel approaches Alice and kisses her. She hopes to recruit the aspiring painter for her artist collective… The original canvas was torn in the back.

Once again Gomez, dry and deadpan and funny in her own right, is the perfect foil, and provides the balance that helps make the show — notwithstanding the old-guy jokes, including Charles and Oliver finding out the same doctor worked on their knees — feel ageless, a series for everyone. One feels grateful for this example of septuagenarian comic actors working energetically at the top of their game, in a successful show that plays to their strengths — Martin’s cracked sweetness, Short’s hyperkinetic self-regard — not just for what it means for show business, but the world at large. (The show is funny enough that it can afford not to be funny all the time.) Lucy (Zoe Colletti), Charles’ virtual stepdaughter from a former relationship, previously unseen but significant in her absence — he daily makes omelets in her honor, but makes contact only at the end of the first season — shows up in person; we get a glimpse of his father, too, in flashback scenes, as we will of Mabel’s dad. (There’s a nice blink-and-you’ll-miss-it visual joke, a package being loaded out labeled “Sting’s rainsticks.”) Schumer runs into Oliver in the elevator and, after declaring herself a fan of his podcast (“So raw, all of you, and not afraid of bombing, really wasting people’s time”), asks, “Would you ever consider selling me the rights to the podcast so I could turn it into an eight- to 10-episode streaming series with exclusive internet content leading to gamification?” Premiering Tuesday on Hulu, it is in many ways a model second season, giving you more of the same, but different, making use of all the resources established in the excellent first to create something even richer in character and emotion. In a flash, they go from tabloid famous to tabloid infamous — which is good enough for Oliver, who lives for any kind of recognition.

To put it another way: While its blade may have dulled a little between seasons, fans can rest assured knowing that Only Murders in the Building is still sharp enough to make a lasting mark. Several of the first eight episodes of Only Murders in the Building season 2 are, for instance, narrated by characters outside of the show’s central trio, and one installment even follows Houdyshell’s Bunny in the hours leading up to her murder. The only downside to the expanded scope of Only Murders in the Building season 2 is that the show’s plotting takes a bit of a hit as a result. That fault is only exacerbated by the fact that season 2 adds several new players to the show’s existing ensemble, some of whom make for more compelling figures than others. Not only do Mabel, Oliver, and Charles begin to use Bunny’s murder as the foundation of a new season of their hit true-crime podcast but they also begin to explore The Arconia itself in ways they hadn’t before. The good news is that, based on its first eight episodes, it seems safe to say that Only Murders in the Building’s second season is, thankfully, shaping up to be a worthwhile adventure.
Shirley MacLaine steals the show in the new season of Only Murders in the Building, and she's just getting started.
I think some of them didn’t believe I was still alive.” “It’s very good, very good,” she admits. We talk about the world and our past—we do a lot of that—but they’re also very intelligent, so we talk about real stuff. I just loved how she was all over the place, improvising herself.” It seems to be everybody’s favorite movie that I’ve done, and I’d like to think I’ve done more than that.” “Oh, the movie I did? “Sixty-six is a bad number.” Oops, it was actually 51 West 67th Street. “Well, that’s different. It was the future.” When I was there filming, the crew was the whole city to me, or at least it was during the pandemic.” “I don’t know about that, but I just loved the character and wanted to work again with Marty and Steve, to be in Manhattan doing something creative, and I wanted to see how John would be as a director; he really did a good job. “Listen, babe, this was in the middle of Covid,” she explains. And I love this character, I think she’s terrific.”
Season 2 counts on our sentimentality for Oliver Putnam, Charles Haden-Savage and Mabel Mora more than the mystery. By Melanie McFarland.
"Only Murders in the Building" could never claim to be understated. Martin, Short, and Gomez have impeccable comedic timing, but their characters are attuned to the sense of loneliness and vicarious existence enveloping millions of us over the last few years. Many will see this as nothing but vamping, a thought echoed by their "Only Murders" groupies. The new season of their "Only Murders" exploits requires them to be personal in front of the public, since Tina Fey's superstar podcaster Cinda Canning decides to insert herself into their lives to add drama for her podcast. Yet after viewing eight episodes, I'm not entirely convinced they'll weave together tightly enough to make a second viewing of the season its own distinct pleasure. Oliver wants to hold on to his return to the spotlight, however limited, while also making a few extra bucks. Nobody expected her to complete them instead of merely fitting in with their established chemistry. Cara Delevingne's casting as Alice Banks, an artist who takes an interest in Mabel, slides somewhere into the middle on the scale of noticeability; given where her storyline goes, we get why the producers leaped at the thought of pairing two very famous and glamorous millennials onscreen. "They usually move on a new case that never hits like the original . . . so, you know, we have a real opportunity here." Most apartments or condominiums have distinct echoes and whispers, but in the first and second seasons of the show, we're reminded of The Arconia's harmony. The "Police" frontman's residency at the Arconia is an inspired bit, allowing him to showcase his comedic chops along with embracing his reputation as a deadly serious, pompous artiste. Here, for the time being, the mystery-driven comedy's trust in the audience's affection for Oliver Putnam, Charles Haden-Savage, and Mabel Mora, along with the actors who play them (Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez, respectively) remain its greatest asset.
Streaming on Hulu, Only Murders In The Building starring Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez checks off every box.
Steve Martin’s deadpan, dry Charles is played perfectly as the most successful and intellectual of the three, but yet is seemingly, the most behind, playing catch up. For Charles and Oliver, the podcast adds freshness and excitement to a their life that, to them, has passed them by. To Mabel, the podcast and friendships represent a future. In the first two seasons, you see familiar stars you know, even a ROCK star who plays himself and is hysterical. The problem, they get caught up in the real crime they are podcasting about. They meet up with a young, attractive women, also lonely, with her own issues, to create a crime podcast.
Selena Gomez and Cara Delevingne shared a kiss in episode 2 of season 2 of Only Murders in the Building. Here's what you (and we) had to say about it.
When Uma drops Bunny’s parrot off to live with Oliver—apparently his guardianship of her pet was one of Bunny’s dying wishes—the parrot has some wisdom to impart: “I know who did it.” Oh, Mrs. Gambolini, pray tell! A generous interpretation of this scene would argue the writers are acknowledging Mabel’s ability to grow, to shed her “mildly stand-offish millennial” archetype in favor of expanding her art and her relationships. There’s no Bridgerton-level heat, to be sure, but Only Murders isn’t trying to argue that Mabel’s a good time in bed, just that she’s figuring out what a new phase of her life might look like. Finally, episode 2 wheels us back around to the present, and we watch Charles spiral as he questions why, exactly, his father is the subject of a titillating piece of paint pornography. He’s sporting an inconspicuous shiner around his left eye, which he blames on his cats before inviting the podcast trio over to a “gathering” in Bunny’s old unit. First, let’s remember there’s a murder mystery at hand, and it seems its conclusion will have as much to do with where the killing took place as who did the stabbing.
Hulu's Only Murders in the Building starring Martin Short, Steve Martin, and Selena Gomez returns just as funny, and just as mysterious, in season 2.
Through these people and their stories, you learn how the city has changed and where it might be going, who was allowed to be in a neighborhood and who was kept out. One of the markers of a good television show is in how well it implies a world around it. That second corpse brings a twist to Only Murders in the Building’s second season: This time, the heroes are the prime suspects. Only Murders in the Building is set in the Arconia, an apartment building in Manhattan’s wealthy Upper West Side neighborhood. Across 10 episodes, the series pulled double duty, both gently roasting true-crime aficionados while also constructing a compelling mystery in its own right, doling out jokes and intrigue in equal measure. But most formidable is its skill in conjuring a whole world out of a single building, and how pleasant it is to inhabit that world for 30 minutes at a time.
"I thought it was beautiful and really well written, and I'm very excited,” Selena Gomez says of her onscreen romance with Cara Delevingne's Alice.
“There's a bit of that feeling where you're excited to be in their presence and you hope they're wonderful.” “I was so grateful, because it means a lot to me to represent the community in such a fun way. “I loved how it's portrayed because a lot of the times with queer characters it takes such a spotlight instead of just being part of the whole story. “She has a bit of a mask on. Alice “has a couple of secrets,” Delevingne says. “We met on the side of a green, grassy hill running around in our clothing,” Delevingne remembers.

So not only could “Only Murders” allow Lane to enter the history books for receiving the most nominations in the category, but it could potentially also make him a Primetime Emmy winner for the first time in his lengthy, storied career. Should it come to fruition, working in the actor’s favor down the line is the fact that “Only Murders in the Building” is airing its highly anticipated sophomore outing during Phase 2 of Emmy voting. But Lane’s duplicitous turn as a wealthy patron of Oliver’s (Short) who agrees to sponsor the podcast within the show but is revealed to be harboring dark secrets of his own, provides a compelling, memorable alternative. A three-time Tony winner, Lane has yet to win a Primetime Emmy (he is the recipient of two Daytime Emmy Awards). However, it’s not for lack of recognition. So if Lane can snag a nom for his performance as Teddy Dimas, a fellow Arconia resident and purveyor of dips (and presumably other things sold at delis), he’ll own the solo record at six. Only Murders in the Building” is an embarrassment of riches.

Cara Delevingne kissed longtime close friend Selena Gomez on screen...and told E! all about it on the network's While You Were Streaming web series.
“So to be able to spend that much time with her, and also to be able to work with her, she’s just such an incredible person to work with whether I know her or not. “Selena is a very special friend, and it’s been so fun to get to work with her for the first time. “There was no hesitation,” she said. “There was no question. “Would anyone in the world not like to kiss Selena? Her quick run-in with the fake painting is probably the last of her involvement with the case. The newfound fan of "murder...podcasts, murder podcasts" is even interested in adapting the show for the screen, and she quickly wins over showman Oliver. It's a fun role, but she's definitely more of a side plot than a suspect. Howard doesn't have nice words for the expectant mother, with him telling the trio, "If you thought Bunny was a bitch, wait 'til you get a load of this one." If she's involved in the murder, that's a very impressive poker face, especially in front of Bunny's glamorous mother (played by screen legend Shirley MacLaine). Both the needle and Bunny's painting have planted to frame our main trio for the murder. Hulu's comedy whodunnit Only Murders in the Building is finally back, and season 2's murder investigation is moving quickly.
Here's every running theory for who killed Bunny Folger on 'Only Murders in the Building' season 2, including Selena Gomez's character Mabel.
What if one of them decided to guarantee their favorite podcast got renewed for a second season (lol, how meta) by killing off someone else in the building? and he has such a flair for the dramatic. We also know, after the first couple of episodes, that she said the words "fourteen" and "savage" to Mabel before dying in her arms. While it would be surprising if Uma killed Bunny, it would not be surprising if Uma was the one trying to frame Mabel, Charles, and Oliver. Just to refresh, at the end of season 1, the guys find Mabel in her apartment covered in Bunny's blood. The hilarious murder mystery comedy Only Murders in the Building is back for season 2 on Hulu, and I'm desperate to out-sleuth the Only Murders trio.
Actress explains what drew her character to Selena Gomez's true-crime podcaster.
“She’s a bit of a catalyst,” Delevingne further explains of Alice’s role in Season 2. She further reveals that the cast had no idea who the killer was “while we’re shooting,” leading to some tension behind the scenes as well. But could there be more to Alice’s interest than genuine concern for a young woman accused of murder?

There are not many of them left in the city and they are kind of unicorns. Before it became a luxury condominium like the Belnord, the Ansonia had a storied history. Built in 1908 by the architectural firm Hiss and Weekes, the Belnord spans an entire block. We were leading into this idea of a world within a world," production designer Curt Beech told Architectural Digest, “ “I knew we could make something as elevated as that amazing building. The creators of "Only Murders" always imagined the show being set in this kind of apartment.
Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez are having exactly as much fun as it looks like they're having on Hulu's true crime comedy.
I would say by the second season, I felt like I got a really good groove with Mabel, and in general, I felt more comfortable to ask for their advice on a scene, or if maybe that sounded bad. And struggling with that kind of loneliness, I like for my character. Martin: For me, I like dealing with playing a has-been. Gomez: After doing the first season, the reaction I got really was warm and lovely and surprising. And then I got to be a little bit more involved. You can go back to the show when you want to. So it was an honor for me to work with her, and she was very kind to me. I don’t know if it was an honor for her to work with me. What I love about Shirley is that she’s filled with a lifetime of show business stories that she will share with you right away. Martin: I have no idea what the demographics are. I think it’s very satisfying for the audience. After solving the case, Charles, Oliver and Mabel now find themselves suspects in a fresh case: the murder of their co-op board president, Bunny (Jayne Houdyshell), whom Mabel found in her apartment, stabbed with a knitting needle.
