Kevin McCarthy, Have You No Sense of Decency (The Atlantic)

If, after the latest January 6 hearing, House Republicans persist in their policy of pro-Trump cover-up, American democracy is in dire peril.

When all of this is finished, a few heroes will stand out: Hutchinson and Cheney, at the top of the list. And the many dupes and fools. So Americans must start asking and keep asking: Leader McCarthy, will you be part of the cover-up? One of the things we’ve learned about his administration is that Donald Trump did not get much value from his true believers. Everybody in any way connected to the investigation anticipates that if Republicans win control of the House of Representatives in November, these hearings will be shut down. So the United States has arrived at a bizarre and terrifying predicament.

Jan. 6 panel warns of attempts to 'influence' witnesses by Trump allies (NBC News)

Jan. 6 committee members revealed at the close of Tuesday's hearing that they are concerned that allies of former President Donald Trump are trying to.

A second witness, according to Cheney, also received a phone call before his or her deposition: Someone “let me know you have your deposition tomorrow. “The Press is going to focus on some sensational revelations from today: guns, grabbing a secret service agent, etc. We will be discussing these issues as a committee and carefully considering our next steps," Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., said at the conclusion of the hearing.

"I think most Americans know that attempting to influence witnesses to testify untruthfully presents very serious issues," Cheney said.

"And they have reminded me a couple of times that Trump does read transcripts and just keep that in mind as I proceed through my depositions and interviews with the committee." The committee is set to hold its next public hearing in July. "We have received evidence of one particular practice that raises significant concern."

The House Jan. 6 committee is "discussing" the matter and considering "next steps," Cheney said.

Tuesday’s session featured testimony from just one witness: Cassidy Hutchinson, who was a top aide to White House chief of staff Mark Meadows at the time. “And they have reminded me a couple of times that Trump does read transcripts and just to keep that in mind as I proceeded through my depositions and interviews with the committee.” Its members have been holding a series of public hearings in recent weeks to share what it has learned. He knows you’re loyal, and you’re going to do the right thing when you go in for your deposition.” “We’ll be discussing these issues as a committee, carefully considering our next steps.” “What they said to me is, ‘As long as I continue to be a team player, they know that I’m on the team, I’m doing the right thing, I’m protecting who I need to protect, you know, I’ll continue to stay in good graces in Trump World,’” she said one witness told the committee.

Live updates: Jan. 6 hearings day 6 (CNN)

Rep. Liz Cheney delivers remarks during a hearing by the House Select Committee to Investigate the January 6th Attack on the US Capitol on June 21.

Then-Vice President Mike Pence was also evacuated from the chamber, he was to perform his role in the counting of electoral votes. With about 30 minutes to go before Washington, DC's 6 p.m. ET curfew, Washington police amassed in a long line to push the mob back from the Capitol grounds. An armed standoff took place at the House front door as of 3 p.m. ET, and police officers had their guns drawn at someone who was trying to breach it. The former President and his allies are planning to cast Hutchinson as a junior aide who had little influence inside the West Wing, despite her proximity to both Trump and his chief of staff. When and how the events occurred that day have been a key part of the committee’s probe. At least six of her former colleagues that CNN spoke with said her testimony won’t be good for Trump or Meadows. One noted she was aware of Meadows’s activities “or lack thereof” on Jan. 6, 2021. It is also possible that what the public hears in today's setting from former Mark Meadows aide Cassidy Hutchinson may not be the sum total of what she has shared with the committee. As to why she’s doing this amid all the security concerns, this source says she “got caught up in this” as a young staffer in her early 20s and wanted to do the right thing. If lawmakers wanted to get in touch with Trump, they called Hutchinson, not the White House switchboard. So far, the committee has only played small snippets from all that testimony, so there is a lot more to learn from her today. Meeting in a secure location like this is highly unusual for the committee, as most of the material they are dealing with is not considered classified. A person close to Trump said he is nervous about Hutchinson's testimony at Tuesday's hearing.

In bombshell testimony before the committee Tuesday, Hutchinson detailed what she witnessed as a top aide to then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows before and on Jan. 6. Hutchinson said that on Jan. 3, 2021, Cipollone approached her after hearing that Meadows had floated the idea of going to the Capitol on Jan. 6 and told her, "This would be legally a terrible idea for us, we have serious legal concerns if we go up to the Capitol that day," she told the committee. WASHINGTON — Rep. Liz Cheney, R-Wyo., reinvigorated her call Wednesday for former Trump White House counsel Pat Cipollone to testify before the House Jan. 6 committee in the wake of damning testimony from former White House aide Cassidy Hutchinson.

Liz Cheney: GOP can't be loyal to both Trump and the Constitution (Axios)

She alleged Trump is "attempting to unravel the foundations of our Constitutional Republic ... aided by Republican leaders."

- "Her superiors — men many years older—are hiding behind executive privilege, anonymity and intimidation," Cheney said. Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) again called on former White House counsel Pat Cipollone to testify before the Jan. 6 committee, one day after damning testimony by a former White House aide tied former President Trump to the attack. "Her bravery and patriotism were awesome to behold. Cassidy Hutchinson, a top aide to former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, delivered the most damning testimony to date in the Jan. 6 hearings, tying former President Trump directly to the attack and providing potential evidence if criminal charges are pursued. Worth noting: Cheney praised Cassidy Hutchinson, a former top aide to Trump White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, for her testimony Tuesday before the House panel investigating the Capitol riot, during which she testified that the former president lunged at his security detail when he learned he would not be taken to the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021 - "It is undeniable — the Republican Party cannot be both loyal to Donald Trump and loyal to the Constitution," Cheney said.

In a forceful speech, the congresswoman also denounced Republican leaders who had “made themselves willing hostages to this dangerous and irrational man.”

Mr. Trump has also continued to repeat lies about his 2020 election loss, maintaining that the contest was “stolen” from him. Ms. Cheney had been a supporter of Mr. Trump’s until shortly after the 2020 election, when she criticized him for his baseless fraud allegations. Ms. Cheney, who was forced out of her leadership post as the No. 3 Republican in the House last year as she repeatedly excoriated Mr. Trump for the events of Jan. 6, has become a fairly isolated presence within a party that remains heavily in thrall of the former president. Republicans, she said at another point, “have to choose,” because they “cannot both be loyal to Donald Trump and loyal to the Constitution.” Representative Liz Cheney, the Wyoming Republican and vice chairwoman of the House committee investigating the Capitol riot of Jan. 6, 2021, described former President Donald J. Trump in stark terms on Wednesday night as a threat to the republic who had “gone to war with the rule of law.” In a forceful speech, the congresswoman also denounced Republican leaders who had “made themselves willing hostages to this dangerous and irrational man.”

She didn't shy away from her newfound role as the face of the anti-Trump GOP.

And in the months since Jan. 6, and her role on the committee, Cheney said she’s been moved by young Americans approaching her — especially the young women. “Let me also say this to all the little girls and young women who are watching tonight,” Cheney said. Because Republicans cannot both be loyal to Donald Trump and loyal to the Constitution.” “And believe me, I share that sentiment.” She hit the Biden administration for its economic policies and record-high inflation plaguing American households. She ran through the Jan. 6 committee’s damning weeks of testimony that has illustrated Trump’s multi-pronged attempt to hold on to power and his bubbling rage.

'Domestic threat:' Liz Cheney says Republicans must abandon ... (USA TODAY)

Cheney called the former president a clear and present danger to both the Republican Party and to American democracy at large.

One of two Republicans on the investigating committee, Cheney discussed evidence about Trump's efforts to basically steal the 2020 election and encourage riots over it. Earlier this year, the national Republican Party censured her. The Wyoming congressman faces a Republican primary challenge in August from Harriet Hageman, a well-funded attorney who has Trump's backing. Saying that Trump and his backers appear willing to try and steal future elections, Cheney told fellow Republicans that "we are also confronting a domestic threat that we have never faced before – a former president who is attempting to unravel the foundations of our Constitutional Republic." Hageman called Cheney's speech ironic, saying she "is the last one who should be giving lectures about the future of the Republican Party when she is single-handedly trying to burn it to the ground." WASHINGTON – Liz Cheney urged the Republican Party on Wednesday to rid itself of Donald Trump, calling the former president a clear and present threat to both the GOP and to American democracy at large.

Liz Cheney: Republicans must choose between Trump, Constitution (Los Angeles Times)

Rep. Liz Cheney said at California's Reagan library that the Republican Party cannot be loyal to both Trump and the Constitution: 'We must choose.'

“And believe me, I share that sentiment.” “Our leaders should behave and act responsibly with dignity, honor and integrity. The congresswoman proved to be a major draw; the library’s parking lot was full more than an hour before the speech, and eager audience members trudged uphill along the canyon road where excess cars parked. “She’s standing for what is true, what is factual, what is necessary to promote decency in this country,” he said. “They’ve always had really stellar people leading the party. “We must pull back.” We could disagree with on policy, but we could respect the people.” But Democrats were largely portrayed as allies, not adversaries, throughout her speech. “One of my Democratic colleagues said to me recently that he looked forward to the day when he and I could disagree again,” she said to laughs. In her speech, Cheney recounted what the select committee has found, including Trump’s attempts to go to the Capitol to prevent the counting of the electoral votes and his denunciations of Pence that encouraged a violent mob to pursue the vice president. “We have to choose, because Republicans cannot be loyal to Donald Trump and to the Constitution,” she said. “My fellow Americans, we stand at the edge of an abyss, and we must pull back,” she said.

"But this time, this moment in our history, demands more. Indeed, as she was being introduced on Wednesday, a library official briefly noted and then dismissed concerns they received that Cheney might be heckled in the audience. She also took time to criticize Democratic President Joe Biden's handling of inflation and the southern border.
