Next, Birtch will star in the Tim Burton/Netflix Wednesday, a series that focuses on the Addams family’s daughter as she attends Nevermore Academy. Birch plays Tamara Novak, the only normie on staff who is Wednesday’s dorm mother. Sadly, Birch’s schedule didn’t allow her to take the offer from Disney to reprise her role as an adult version of Dani in the sequel film. She was appointed Gamma by the Whisperer’s leader, Alpha (Samantha Morton) but previously went by the name Mary. Birch’s character didn’t last long on the series, but she did a fantastic job during her short stint on the show.

The trailer does, however, suggest that one the young girls responsible for resurrecting the trio may have some witchy powers of her own. The official synopsis doesn’t offer up many plot details: ‘It’s been 29 years since someone lit the Black Flame Candle and resurrected the 17th-century sisters,’ it runs, ‘and they are looking for revenge. “I am still grateful and proud to help shepherd this ingenious project as executive producer alongside producer Lynn Harris, whom I have loved and admired as a colleague and friend since she helped get me the job choreographing ‘Boogie Nights.’” Adam Shankman (Disenchanted) was originally set to direct the sequel but has been replaced by Anne Fletcher. The news came after fans spotted a black cat in the trailer for Hocus Pocus 2, which dropped earlier this week. There has been no explanation offered as to why Jason Marsden would not return for Hocus Pocus 2, but his character was sent to the afterlife at the end of the first film. In addition to Midler, Parker, and Najimy, Doug Jones is the only other cast member from the first film confirmed to return for Hocus Pocus 2, after he originated the part of Billy Butcherson, Winifred's zombified ex-lover, nearly three decades ago. "Jay and Ice will not be in Hocus Pocus 2," Jelinek adds in a separate phone call, going on to reference Disney's anniversary special that premiered in 2018. Bagby also notes that he's gotten closer to Jelinek since Hocus Pocus 2 was announced. When asked to speculate where Ice might be now in the world of the films, Bagby sees the character in line with the kinds of parts he plays now: "Authoritative, mean, bully, bad guys." "The 25-year bash, that really felt like Hocus Pocus 2, because we had Kenny Ortega directing, and it was the first time the original producers and all the kids were there.... "Unfortunately, I am not a part of it," Bagby says, though he recalls his manager submitting him for a small role as the owner of the Salem Magic Shoppe, which can be seen operating out of the former Sanderson house in the first teaser trailer.
Entertainment Weekly confirmed that James Marsden won't lend his voice to 'Hocus Pocus 2,' set to release on Disney+ Sept. 30.
Marsden, a veteran voice actor best known for his role as Max in “A Goofy Movie” and other Disney properties, isn’t the only “Hocus Pocus” cast member who won’t be featured in the sequel. As of now, it’s unclear whether the character will return voiced by a different actor, or if a different black cat is featured in the film. Marsden’s reps did not respond to a request for comment.

Another major filming location included Chase Farm in Lincoln, where a reproduction of a Colonial-era village was built and subsequently burned down (for story purposes!). Only time will tell if we will get a glimpse of the presumable flashback wreckage in the full length trailer, or if we will have to wait for the film’s release this coming fall. @1:12–@1:26: A carnival set also popped up for filming in downtown Newport last September, lining up perfectly with the trailer’s final shot of the leading ladies. @ 0:35–1:10: This appears to take place, at least in part, within Lakeside-Carpenter Cemetery in East Providence, where Hocus Pocus 2 also reportedly filmed, with a glimpse of the Newman Congregational Church at the beginning of the clip.

Variety reports that a part was written for Thora Birch, who starred as Dani in the original film, but due to scheduling conflicts, the return did not materialize. The cat certainly has a tongue, as evidenced by the screenshot above, and it would be strange for Disney to pass up the opportunity to include a talking animal in any movie. “Looks awesome!” Marsden captioned a shot from the trailer on Stories. “That cat better be female.”
