This season, San Antonio Spurs guard Dejounte Murray emerged as a star. The 25-year-old averaged 21.1 points, 8.3 rebounds, and 9.2 assists and.
It is a huge gamble that more likely than not will fail to yield the team the No. 1 pick in the 2023 draft, and besides, it is cheating the Spurs’ loyal fan base out of a season in which the team could potentially return to the playoffs. Spurs apologists will say that it worked in the 1996-97 season, when David Robinson missed most of the season with an injury and the team won the top pick in the lottery, which it used on Duncan. As a result, Wembanyama is considered the favorite to become the top pick in next summer’s NBA Draft. Apparently, the Spurs want to tank and be terrible next season so that they can perhaps draft him. He is a quick, explosive and exciting player, and he looks like the type of man the Spurs can and should build around. Wembanyama is 7-foot-2, and his elite length allows him to protect the rim, block shots, and finish strong at a high level. Why in the world are the Spurs trying to move Murray, and how in the world does it make sense? Trading Murray would set the Spurs back at least a few years in that process, but apparently, they don’t see it that way. Spurs head coach and president Gregg Popovich is 73 years of age, and he is rumored to be nearing retirement. He may not be a deep-ball threat (he made just 32.7 percent of his 3-point attempts in 2022), but he can do a lot of the other things that stars are supposed to do. They took Murray with the 29th overall pick in the 2016 NBA Draft, and after coming on slowly in his first few years, which included missing a whole campaign due to a torn ACL, Murray started to show he had real potential. Six years after the retirement of Tim Duncan and four years after the departures of Tony Parker and Kawhi Leonard, San Antonio is clearly in a rebuilding phase.

NBA Rumors: Recent reports suggest Dejounte Murray could be traded to the Atlanta Hawks and John Wall is signing with the LA Clippers?
With Kawhi Leonard and Paul George expected back healthy next season, there’s a good chance that LA will be able to return to title status in the Western Conference. Additionally, Wall is a free man. And two, if the Hawks manage to pry Murray away from San Antonio without having to give up John Collins, it’d be a huge win.
The San Antonio Spurs are currently at the forefront of the latest NBA trade rumors due to their willingness to entertain discussions centered around ...
In those five seasons, Roy was a three-time All-Star and was the 2006-07 Rookie of the Year. After his playing career ended, Roy became a high school basketball coach in Washington State. It was there that he met and began teaching a young Beauchamp. Roy was the head coach at Nathan Hale High School in Washington State. He led Beauchamp and future NBA player Michael Porter Jr. to a state title in their freshman season. It was after this season that Beauchamp decided to move to Arizona to play for Dream City Christian. This was a difficult decision for Beauchamp. He bet on himself to go to a school where he would get the most attention from college and professional scouts. Coming to an agreement will require bridging the gap between the 26-year-old’s original asking price and what the team has shown a willingness to pay him, of course, but progress on that front could be coming in the near future. Over the past few seasons, though, more and more players have been opting for developmental leagues, such as the G League, in hopes of making it to the NBA. This, of course, is the route that Beauchamp took. That has not only cooled the potential trade market which formed in the build-up to the draft, but also led to further optimism that a deal can be hammered out by the start of the 2022 campaign. MarJon Beauchamp has undertaken a journey to the NBA that belongs in a movie. Appearing on the Kevin Query show on 107.5 The Fan in Indianapolis on Tuesday (YouTube link), Pacers general manager Chad Buchanan discussed a pair of veteran Indiana players who have been at the center of trade rumors this offseason: Myles Turner and Malcolm Brogdon. Asked directly whether the Pacers are “actively shopping” Turner, Buchanan denied that the veteran center is on the trade block. While Collins is under contract for four more seasons at a rate of $25M annually, Gallinari is on a partially guaranteed expiring contract and will be off the books after the 2022-23 season. If the Spurs are looking more toward the future than the present, they may value cap flexibility and the opportunity to load up on draft picks more than a win-now player like Collins. For what it’s worth, a package that doesn’t involve Collins and is heavy on draft picks would line up more with the “Jrue Holiday-like” return Fischer said last week that the Spurs were seeking. Ryan Moore (+10000) Moore is working his way back from injury but seems to love TPC Deere Run. He won the John Deere Classic in 2016 and finished second last year. Some of the top options in such a deal could include Jakob Poeltl, Josh Richardson, and Doug McDermott. Each player can help a contender who misses out on their top free agent targets. Many have questioned the ceiling of this Spurs team given Murray is their best player and his offensive skill-set poses limitations as a top option.

While Collins is under contract for four more seasons at a rate of $25MM annually, Gallinari is on a partially guaranteed expiring contract and will be off the books after the 2022/23 season. The Pelicans received three first-round picks and a pair of first-round pick swaps from Milwaukee in that Holiday deal. Fischer adds ( via Twitter) that he has heard those same whispers.
The San Antonio Spurs are looking for four first-round picks if they're going to part ways with Dejounte Murray amid interest from the Hawks.
San Antonio’s asking price for Murray is four first round draft picks with little to no protections. That’s a ton of picks. There could also be first-round pick swaps involved in place of a first-round pick:
According to a recent report, the Heat checked in on Dejounte Murray a few weeks back. “I did get indications that a few weeks back, Miami checked in on ...
According to source, they were prepared to do that 4 Ben in Feb. Morey was lone Sixers’ dissenter. “I did get indications that a few weeks back, Miami checked in on Dejounte Murray,” the Five on the Floor podcast reported. According to a recent report, the Heat checked in on Dejounte Murray a few weeks back.
Dejounte Murray is one of the better young players in the league.
But we’ve seen San Antonio perform poorly for a season, land the No. 1 pick in the draft (selecting Tim Duncan), and then immediately re-join the contending ranks. Wembanyama plays in the Euroleague for ASVEL, an organization owned by longtime Spurs guard Tony Parker. Without him, though, they could be in prime contention for the top overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. Overall, Murray ranks top 25 in the entire league. My guess is that they would want to get as young as possible in their rebuild. Murray is a defense-first All-Star guard with a 6-foot-10 wingspan.
The Atlanta Hawks were the second best offensive team in the NBA this past season. Trae Young had the best season of his career averaging 28.4 points and ...
Defense as a whole is a problem for the Hawks. They had the ninth-worst defensive rating in the NBA this past season. Murray takes the Hawks from a fun to watch, to a 50-plus win team. It’s the best shot they’ve had to make a serious offseason transaction to improve their roster since they signed Dikembe Mutombo in 1995. For the Hawks, they immediately have arguably the best backcourt in the NBA. Murray is 6-foot-4, but has a 6-foot-10 wingspan. They hounded Young all over the court for five games, causing him to put up one of the worst playoff performances in NBA history from a star player — 15.4 points and 6.2 turnovers per game on 31.9/18.4/78.8 shooting splits. The Atlanta Hawks were the second best offensive team in the NBA this past season.
Spurs star Dejounte Murray is the subject of many NBA trade rumors this week, and the reported asking price to acquire him is very, very high.
One of the best reasons to acquire Murray, aside from his impressive talent, is his contract. "San Antonio’s asking price for Murray is four first round draft picks with little to no protections," Ellis wrote in a story published Tuesday morning. Trading Murray doesn't make a ton of sense for the Spurs, unless they really want to undergo a full rebuild with a bunch of first-round picks.
The San Antonio Spurs are rumored to be in trade talks involving All-Star guard Dejounte Murray. The Atlanta Hawks have been linked to Murray, and there are ...
With that being said, he is reportedly open to joining the Hawks and has talked with Trae Young. The report also states that Murray is not applying pressure on the Spurs’ front office to make a trade happen. Of course, the Spurs have every right to set the bar high. The San Antonio Spurs are rumored to be in trade talks involving All-Star guard Dejounte Murray. The Atlanta Hawks have been linked to Murray, and there are stirrings of a deal in the works.
The Spurs might still trade Dejounte Murray to the Hawks – but with Danilo Gallinari, not John Collins as matching salary.
However, he’d be locked into that relatively cheap salary with the Hawks, who – as an over-the-cap team – wouldn’t be allowed to renegotiate his deal. With San Antonio having cap space this summer, he might seek a renegotiation-and-extension – which could cause the Spurs to trade him if they don’t value him that highly. Gallinari is on an expiring contract with just $5 million of $21.45 million salary guaranteed until tomorrow, when the final year of his contract would become fully guaranteed. The Hawks have all their own future first-round picks plus a Hornets first-rounder (top-16 protected in 2023, lottery-protected in 2024 and 2025 then two second-rounders). Spurs prepping for future & '23 draft Would be Gallo & multiple 1st round picks.
“There's talk that the Spurs are looking to trade Murray for three first round draft picks. I'm told that is incorrect. San Antonio's asking price for Murray is ...
Hence, the reported asking price in Murray trade conversations. Atlanta does have an additional first-round pick from the Charlotte Hornets in 2023. We have absolutely no idea whether a trade will come together leading up to the start of NBA free agency.
Should the Indiana Pacers join the bidding war for Dejounte Murray? In reality, the Spurs have no reason to trade Dejounte Murray, which is the reason for San ...
In reality, the Spurs have no reason to trade Dejounte Murray, which is the reason for San Antonio establishing a steep price to acquire his services. While there is some thick competition already, the Pacers should have what it takes to strike a deal for him. In a rather surprising turn of events, All-Star point guard Dejounte Murray is reportedly being aggressively pursued by multiple teams in the trade market.
The Miami Heat appear to have joined the Dejounte Murray sweepstakes amid reported interest from the Hawks.
The Heat have their point guard in Kyle Lowry, but it’s not hard to imagine a backcourt partnership between Murray and the 36-year-old veteran. Well, it sounds like the Miami Heat have joined in on the Murray sweepstakes. At this point, it feels like Dejounte Murray is on his way out of the San Antonio Spurs. The All-Star point guard has been linked to trade rumors for days now, with the Atlanta Hawks emerging as a possible landing spot for him.
Dejounte Murray has made a name for himself this season, as he became a first-time All-Star, and showed that he is one of the best defensive guards in the.
The Spurs could also draft an elite prospect in next year's draft if they trade Dejounte Murray to rebuild, and we'll see if they end up doing so in the future. It was recently reported that the San Antonio Spurs are asking teams for "four first-round picks" in any Dejounte Murray trade. However, while he hasn't been able to be the No. 1 option on a playoff team yet, he could definitely slot in nicely as a No. 2 offensive option behind an established superstar.
The New York Knicks have been heavily connected to Dallas Mavericks guard Jalen Brunson in free agency, but the team could also be after San Antonio Spurs ...
For now, it appears Brunson is an inevitable addition, but the Murray watch could be on in New York as well. New York would presumably have some competition for Murray if he's indeed on the trading block. He nearly averaged a triple-double in his age-25 season and plays great defense to boot. Spurs prepping for future & '23 draft Would be Gallo & multiple 1st round picks. SNY's Ian Begley reported that the Knicks would have the draft capital to go after Murray. He also stated that he wasn't sure "if the Knicks have touched base with San Antonio, but rival executives see Murray and Brunson as a strong fit, for what it’s worth."
San Antonio is receiving Danilo Gallinari, three first-round picks, and a pick swap.
The Hornets’ 2023 pick will be lottery-protected in 2024 and 2025 if it doesn’t convey next year, then would turn into two second-round picks if it hasn’t conveyed by that point. The veteran forward probably isn’t in the Spurs’ plans at that full $21.45MM figure, so the most likely outcome is that he’ll have his partial guarantee increased by another $6MM-ish in order to legally match Murray’s salary, then will be waived. San Antonio’s decision to accept a package heavy on distant draft picks rather than current players signals that short-term contention probably isn’t in the cards as the front office looks toward the future. San Antonio will also have the right to swap first-round selections with Atlanta in 2026. Atlanta has been the team most frequently linked to Murray though, having reportedly explored deals for him dating back to February’s trade deadline. According to Wojnarowski and Chris Kirschner of The Athletic ( links), the three picks going to the Spurs will be Charlotte’s 2023 first-rounder (top-16 protected) and the Hawks’ own 2025 and 2027 first-rounders.
The San Antonio Spurs have agreed to trade Dejounte Murray to the Atlanta Hawks in exchange for Danilo Gallinari, three future first-round picks and future first-round pick swap, CBS Sports HQ's Bill Reiter confirmed Wednesday.
The 2023 pick via the Hornets is likely going to be in the middle of the first round, and the 2025 pick via the Hawks figures to be toward the back half of the first round as well. Of course, the Spurs know all of this, just as they know that by keeping Murray (and White) they would be left spinning their wheels in mediocrity. The 2026 pick swap and 2027 first via the Hawks are too far off in the future to discuss with any certainty, but there's a good chance neither are particularly meaningful. If the Spurs' tank succeeds, and they wind up with the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, then this could go down as a league-altering trade. You could have the worst record in the league by 10 games and still easily wind up picking No. 3. That brings up perhaps the most interesting aspect of the trade, which is that it would seem to necessitate Young playing off the ball more than he ever has in his career. Wembanyama, a 7-foot-2, 18-year-old Frenchman, is one of the most intriguing prospects to come across the world stage maybe ever. Murray, who led the league in steals last season, is one of the best perimeter defenders around thanks in large part to his incredible 6-foot-10 wingspan. His ridiculous combination of size, length and coordination make him a destructive defensive force who can challenge every shot at the rim and more than hold his own on the perimeter. Now, though, we can view it as the first step in a teardown. At that point it was clear that whatever ended up happening over the final few months of last season, the Hawks were in for a transformational summer. Murray, a late first-round pick back in 2016, is coming off the best season of his career, in which he led the league in steals and made the All-Star Game for the first time.
The San Antonio Spurs have reportedly agreed to send All-Star guard Dejounte Murray to the Hawks in a blockbuster deal.
This actually does not come as a major surprise considering how the Hawks have been heavily linked to Murray of late. Sources: The Spurs are trading Dejounte Murray to Atlanta for Danilo Gallinari, three first-round draft picks and a draft swap. Sources: The Spurs are trading Dejounte Murray to Atlanta for Danilo Gallinari, three first-round draft picks and a draft swap.
The Atlanta Hawks are trading Danilo Gallinari and three first-round picks to the San Antonio Spurs for All-Star guard Dejounte Murray, sources told ESPN's ...
2 assists, 8.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals last season, earning All-Star honors for the first time in his career. He had 13 triple-doubles, setting the single-season franchise record for the Spurs, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. Ressler said he believed the team would improve just based on experience. "We thought we'd be better this season," Ressler said. Instead, the Hawks escaped the play-in tournament with the No. 8 seed before losing to the Miami Heat in five games in the opening round of the playoffs. Hawks principal owner Tony Ressler said in May that the team wouldn't repeat the "mistake" of complacency that he believes set the stage for this season's disappointing first-round exit from the playoffs.
The New Orleans Pelicans don't really need to add anything to their roster, but with an All-Star point guard available, should they be interested?
However, the Spurs may not want to have any part in Murray’s next contract, which is going to be a max deal that doubles his salary. And there just might happen to be a star available this offseason. But that doesn’t mean the Pelicans are finished making moves, as they could decide to pool their draft assets to try and add another star to a roster that already has big names in Zion Williamson, CJ McCollum, Brandon Ingram and Jonas Valanciunas.
The San Antonio Spurs reportedly agreed to trade guard Dejounte Murray to the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday in exchange for forward Danilo Gallinari, ...
It's fair to argue the Spurs never would have been in a position to need to trade Murray if they chose the correct path four years ago. Murray fills two of the team's biggest needs, perimeter defense and a ball-handler who can help take the load off Trae Young's shoulders. The Charlotte first-round pick is protected picks 1-16 next season and lottery-protected through 2025; it can't even get the Spurs in the Wembayana race. There were calls for the franchise to begin its rebuilding stage in 2018 when Kawhi Leonard requested a trade. That said, the fact the Spurs were in this position calls into question their team-building strategy of the last few years. Rumors regarding Murray's status with the Spurs have been swirling for several weeks.
It's happened: A much discussed deal between the San Antonio Spurs and the Atlanta Hawks that sends Dejounte Murray — a terrific point guard coming off his ...
I would have hoped the Spurs would get more for a player of Murray’s caliber. Plus, the Hawks didn’t even have to trade Collins in this one! Now, that star-studded backcourt will be surrounded by John Collins, Bogdan Bogdanovic, De’Andre Hunter and Clint Capela. A formidable rotation to say the least.
The Atlanta Hawks are going all-in for push up the Eastern Conference with a bold trade for an established backcourt partner next to Trae Young.
The Milwaukee Bucks won a championship in 2021, and have the best player in the world in Giannis Antetokounmpo. The Miami Heat came within a Jimmy Butler three-pointer of going to the NBA Finals this year. The Spurs’ rebuild added three first round draft picks earlier this month with Jeremy Sochan, Malachi Branham, and Blake Wesley. Wesley has the tools to eventually become what Murray grew into if everything hits right — but of course that’s a big if. Young hasn’t been a great off-ball player to this point in his career, but he certainly has the quickness and shooting gravity to become that. This is truly a massive haul of picks that will shape San Antonio’s future whether they use them on players or package them in future trades. The Hawks better hope he can regularly be in the conversation for that moving forward to justify the cost. San Antonio will be praying to the lottery gods for similar luck next summer. At the same time, you have to respect Atlanta for going all-in. Will he be able to effectively space the floor when Young has the ball? The Boston Celtics coming off an NBA Finals run and have a great collection of young talent that just starting to enter its prime. The Hawks are making an all-in push to get back to where they were two seasons ago — the Eastern Conference Finals — before barely grabbing the No. 8 seed in the East this past year. The Spurs are taking a big risk by trading their best player at 25 years old. The Spurs, meanwhile, are finally fully committing to a rebuild in a way they didn’t do when they initially traded Kawhi Leonard. The Spurs haven’t won a playoff series since trading Leonard, but they also haven’t picked higher than No. 9 in the draft, either.
During the pre-draft process, rumors swirled that the San Antonio Spurs were fielding trade calls about Dejounte Murray, but the asking price was a lot of ...
They’ll likely move him before the next deadline if they don’t decide to release him and let him find a team on his own. The only thing keeping this from being an outright F for the Spurs is they will seemingly sink so far in the standings to possess a 14-or-so percent chance to land the No. 1 pick in 2023 and select Wembanyama. If they end up tanking their way to that lottery luck, then this is a much more favorable trade and grade. They’re getting the Charlotte pick for 2023, which should be somewhere in the mid-to-late teens in the first round. But the Spurs are not interested in competing with their current group of players. They weren’t playing with the same fire and passion as the second-half run in the previous season. Now Schlenk has brought in the perfect complementary player to Young, and all it cost him were some picks and none of his key young players. Murray is also one of the best defensive players in the NBA. He’s a terror at forcing turnovers, and he’s brilliant in the way he navigates screens, helps into the paint and recovers to the perimeter. The Hawks’ backcourt defense has been a real weakness, and while teams will still attack Young as much as possible, Murray helps make up for that. The Hawks are thrusting themselves into the mix of teams you really need to watch out for going into next season and beyond. He can run the offense, or he can be someone who is a threat off the catch. He’s a menace in the middle of the floor and going to the hoop on offense. It shocked much of the basketball world, considering Murray was coming off an All-Star campaign as a 25-year-old guard who gets it done on both ends.
In a move that no one could have seen coming weeks ago, the Spurs have agreed to trade Dejounte Murray to the Hawks in exchange for Danilo Gallinari, ...
While it’s fair to wonder why it took the franchise this long to commit to a rebuilding style, at least now it’s clear what the future has in store. They could patiently add young players through the draft until they get one or two All-NBA-caliber prospects, or they could make a big move for a true franchise star in the future by using all the assets they have accrued. Perhaps that’s what actually motivated the trade, as the front office simply figured that it made no sense to go forward with Murray as the team’s best player, but it sets San Antonio back nonetheless. Four years ago, Murray was coming off his first season as a rotation player, in which he had shown enough promise to take over the starting spot from Tony Parker. Had the Spurs moved Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge for picks and young players then, they would have spent the past years trying to build around Murray with players his age. The Spurs failed to make the playoffs last season, despite Murray’s leap, and would have likely been in the race for the play-in again, at best, in 2022/23. The All-Star point guard is entering the second to last year of his very team-friendly contract, so this was arguably the last and certainly the best chance San Antonio had to get a good haul back for him, since it would have been harder to retain leverage as Murray’s free agency got closer. It simply never felt like the Spurs were going to be motivated to move Murray unless they could get a king’s ransom back, which the good-but-not-contending Hawks would have understandably been hesitant to provide.
The Spurs made the deal days after selecting three players in the first round of the NBA draft: forward Jeremy Sochan from Baylor at No. 9; guard Malaki Branham ...

The Hawks have one of the best backcourts in the league; the Spurs have a better chance at Victor Wembanyama.
The Hawks will send Danilo Gallinari to San Antonio as part of a deal that will pair Dejounte Murray and Trae Young in an all-star backcourt.
Murray had teased the possibility of a trade on social media in recent days, and both players appear excited about their new partnership. For San Antonio, parting with Murray, who was taken with the 29th pick in the 2016 draft, couldn’t have been an easy decision. San Antonio ranked 30th in the league in clutch offense with Murray at the helm, often struggling to generate good opportunities due to his poor outside shooting and his limited supporting cast. Gallinari, 33, averaged 11.7 points and 4.7 rebounds off the bench last season and is on a $21.5 million expiring contract that is partially guaranteed. Young will continue to serve as the lead option late in games, freeing Murray to be an off-the-dribble threat when defenses load up on Atlanta’s closer. Murray’s arrival will give Young, one of the NBA’s top playmakers, a reliable secondary ballhandler and creator on offense.
San Antonio reportedly lands multiple future Draft assets in exchange for the All-Star guard.
Gallinari, meanwhile, averaged 11.7 points, 4.7 rebounds and 1.5 assists last season for the Hawks, which finished 43-39. The 29th pick of the 2016 NBA Draft, Murray, 25, earned his first All-Star nod in 2021-22, averaging a career-high 21.1 points to go with 9.2 assists, 8.3 rebounds and 2.0 steals. • 2025 first-round pick
The Atlanta Hawks reportedly are landing Dejounte Murray from the San Antonio Spurs for Danilo Gallinari, three future first-round picks and a future pick ...
The pick swap will be in 2026. For San Antonio, the picture is clear: The team is in full rebuilding mode. Devin Vassell, the Spurs’ lottery pick in 2020, also made significant strides on both ends last season, so the youth-led movement in the organization has a structure with future first-rounders to follow.
