Grass is slippery and not easy to move on, while Williams no longer moves as she did in her younger years. The favorite for the women’s title will be Iga Swiatek, the top-ranked 21-year-old Pole who is on a 35-match winning streak. Each time we see Serena play, we should pause and reflect on her greatness over many decades.” The summer slam is in many ways a gleaming green-and-white symbol of tennis’ often-stuffy traditions, but the All England Club has also played a big part in Williams’ journey to the game’s pinnacle. “Playing singles over the age of 40 is very difficult, or more players would do it. “So I try to play without expectations and just see what this tournament brings me.” The 2018 junior champion tried to downplay her chances, but is the overwhelming favorite of the odds makers. “So I have great memories.” Last year for sure, it was that kind of tournament where I didn’t know what to expect. So it was kind of surprising, but also it’s just a fun time, just to be out there and to enjoy it.” “You know the answer to that. To say the 21-year-old from Poland has dominated the Hologic WTA Tour in 2022 would be something approaching disingenuous. Swiatek has won a ludicrous 35 straight matches – but none of them have come on grass. Now, it seems, tennis is the part-time indulgence that rejuvenates the rest of her life. After failing to win a title in seven consecutive majors, Serena emerged triumphant at the 2012 US Open. “There’s oftentimes that I think subconsciously I’d take breaks,” she said in her pre-tournament press conference at Wimbledon. “I never played as much as the next player throughout my whole career. She’s coming off the fourth major break of her career – and, previously at least, great things have always followed.

Wimbledon 2022: Why was Serena Williams wearing black tape on ... (INSIDER)

Some have noticed that Serena Williams looked different in her return to the court - but why was she wearing black tape on her face to Wimbledon?

It is believed that when applied properly, the elasticity of the tape helps gently lift the skin from the tissue underneath, thereby relieving pressure and easing pain. However, Loria noted that as of 2016 there was limited research to back up the claims. They add: "KT Tape creates neuromuscular feedback (called proprioception) that inhibits (relaxes) or facilitates stronger firing of muscles and tendons." Over three hours and 11 minutes, Williams and Tan went back and forth in an instant classic that ultimately came down to a third-set tiebreak, which the Frenchwoman Tan won, 10-7. "Playing tennis or pretty much doing anything every day is not easy when you have sinuses. "I'm a sinus sufferer," Williams said in 2007.

Serena Williams loses grueling first-round match in return to ... (The Washington Post)

It was the first singles match for Williams since she tore her right hamstring during the opening set of the first round at Wimbledon in 2021.

Ultimately, though, she lost to the steadiness of the daughter of Cambodian and Vietnamese parents, a player coached by 1998 Wimbledon finalist Nathalie Tauziat, and a player who improved her lifetime match record at Grand Slam tournaments to 3-6, set against that of Williams, which stands at 365-55. Wimbledon starts: The season’s third Grand Slam returns in full with big crowds, roars and a little rain. The war in Ukraine: As the tournament gets underway, Wimbledon’s Russia and Belarus ban leaves 16 of the top 100 on the outside. The match showcased her rustiness (54 unforced errors), her everlasting brilliance (61 winners) and the guttural screams that long have helped her find her inner Serena Williams. It showed her fight in the utmost when she prevailed through a monster of a 12-deuce, 30-point second game of the second set, taking on momentum there. As Tan peppered the court with drop shots as if by ancient text of how to play someone with 40-year-old legs, she forced Williams to elevate, and elevate Williams did. She lost an advantage after she led 3-1 in the third set.

Serena Williams Exits Wimbledon in the First Round, Again (The New York Times)

Williams, who had not competed in singles on tour since withdrawing from Wimbledon last year with an injury, lost in three sets to Harmony Tan of France.

Williams served for the match at 5-4 and was two points from victory at 30-15 only to lose the next three points and her serve when she hit an unconvincing forehand approach shot that Tan slapped past her for a backhand winner. That was certainly understandable in light of her long layoff, and the crowd reacted with awkward silence at first. Tauziat understood the importance of keeping Williams out of her prime hitting zones and of keeping her on the move. She also looked as tight as piano wire, struggling to let her natural power flow and missing swing volleys and approach shots by the bunch while laboring to move laterally. It was a ragged but ultimately admirable performance as she tried to shake off the rust and solve the myriad riddles posed by Tan, who had watched Williams only from afar until their duel. But at least she can leave the All England Club with a less painful memory than what she took from last year’s Wimbledon, when she tore a hamstring after slipping in the first set of her first-round match with Aliaksandra Sasnovich, hobbling off Centre Court in great distress. She then had to navigate the tiebreaker despite the weariness in her legs and the tension in her gaze. Williams and her player box full of family, friends and team members, including her new coach Eric Hechtman, were not able to celebrate. She won two sets instead, turning what could have been a feel-good story for Williams into a narrow defeat that will repose the question of how much more professional tennis Williams intends to play. Williams dominated the second set but Tan fought back in the third while Williams’s level and energy dipped even if her fighting spirit did not. “When I saw the draw I was really scared, because it’s Serena,” said Tan, 24. Her grueling duel with Tan was a stylistic contrast that lasted 3 hours and 11 minutes.

"It's a dream because, you know, I saw Serena on the TV when I was young," Tan said. I mean, I was scared when I was on the court, but really happy to be there." I did pretty good on maybe one or two of 'em, but obviously not enough." So it was a tremendous amount of motivation for that."
