Rockets rumors: John Wall's buyout with Houston gets huge update (ClutchPoints)

After choosing to opt-in on his $47.4 million option with the Rockets, John Wall is now working on a buyout with the team.

Wall has been generating some interest from teams in recent days, with the said suitors reportedly just waiting for him to get bought out of his contract before making a move. As reported earlier as well, Wall and the Rockets are set to meet this week in hopes of working out a deal regarding their future ahead of free agency. Furthermore, when he picked up his option last week, the general expectations are the Rockets would be looking at a buyout agreement with him.

John Wall to the Clippers? There might be mutual interest (Los Angeles Times)

The Clippers might be interested in former All-Star guard John Wall, last seen playing 14 months ago if he cuts a buyout deal with the Rockets.

League observers had long expected the team would attempt to bolster a lead ballhandler role in some way this offseason, and the idea of Wall, even after 14 months away from the NBA, had drawn strong interest from some within the Clippers. Even during his prolonged NBA absence, it was always Wall’s prohibitive salary that was seen as the impediment than concerns about his remaining ability. And it’s worth remembering the relationships, track record and needs of the last opponent he played against that April night in Houston when considering why Wall plans on signing with the Clippers once free agency opens Thursday, according to ESPN. A Wall signing wouldn’t affect keeping wing Nicolas Batum, whose reunion with the team is expected because the Clippers have his early Bird rights and can exceed the salary cap for a re-signing. In 2017, the then-Wizard Wall openly tried recruiting George, then in Indiana, to become teammates in Washington. That exile is now reportedly on the verge of ending, with both sides close to reaching a buyout, according to multiple reports. Fourteen months ago John Wall had 27 points and 13 assists to offset a poor three-point shooting night in Houston with nine free-throw attempts.

NBA Free Agency Rumors: Clippers to sign John Wall after Rockets ... (Clips Nation)

Five-time All-Star John Wall appears headed to Los Angeles to play for the Clippers.

That is roughly the amount of the taxpayer midlevel exception, which he is likely to sign for in free agency. Considering how instrumental Hartenstein was to the Clippers this season, this could create an issue and now leave the Clippers without a legitimate backup center. Whether that’s a player option or a fully guaranteed year would remain to be seen. The five-time All-Star has only played in 40 games over the last three seasons, the byproduct of recovering from an Achilles injury and also sitting out the entire 2021-22 season as both the Rockets and Wall worked through a buyout stalemate. Wall had opted into his $47.4 million player option before the two sides agreed on a buyout. According to ESPN’s Tim MacMahon, Wall gave back $6.5 million, a figure extremely close to the taxpayer mid-level exception, which the Clippers do possess.

Rockets, John Wall agree to contract buyout prior to free agency (Rockets Wire)

John Wall will give back approximately $7 million in salary to the Rockets in exchange for a pre-free agency buyout, Chris Haynes reports.

But if the Lakers held firm on their reported reluctance to include any first-round draft asset to incentivize the Rockets, then a mere second-round pick might not be worth the downside of going against the wishes of Wall and his representation. Yet, with two seasons left on Wall’s contract at that time, the Rockets did not immediately engage in buyout talks and waited to explore trade options once his contract entered the final year. But even with one year left, as is the case today, any trade hypotheticals for Wall were complicated by the fact that Houston is now positioned to have major salary cap room in 2023, and a contract buyout preserving that room is preferable to a trade taking back longer-term money. For most teams, it is impossible to find nearly $47 million in expiring salaries for matching purposes. Though Wall did return to the court with the Rockets in 2020-21, that bloated, super-max deal for a player who had medical concerns and was at least somewhat past his prime proved difficult to trade. He will recoup some or all of that in free agency, when he will reportedly sign with the Los Angeles Clippers, per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

John Wall set to join LA Clippers after reaching buyout with Houston ... (ESPN)

John Wall is planning to sign with the Clippers, sources told ESPN, after the veteran point guard reached a buyout with the Rockets.

Reggie Jackson averaged 16.8 points and 4.8 assists as LA's starting point guard last season, when the Clippers went 42-40 and were eliminated in a play-in game. Wall averaged 20.6 points and 6.9 assists in 40 games for the Rockets in 2020-21, proving he still could perform at a high level after missing the previous season and a half because of heel surgery and a torn Achilles tendon. The Rockets instead prioritized the development of young guards Kevin Porter Jr. and Jalen Green, so Wall did not fit in the franchise's plans despite his $44.3 million salary.

Wall has a lengthy injury and surgical history. Wall played in 40 games with Houston in the 2020-21 season, averaging 20.6 points and 6.9 assists. Yahoo first reported that Wall and the Rockets came to the buyout decision. He was selected for the All-Star Game in five consecutive seasons from 2014 through 2018. ESPN first reported that Wall intends to join the Clippers, presumably for the taxpayer mid-level exception of about $6.4 million — basically the same amount he’s giving back to the Rockets to become a free agent. Wall did not appear in any games for Houston this past season.

John Wall agrees to buyout with Rockets: Why superstar will sign ... (Sporting News)

After appearing in just 40 games for the Houston Rockets, John Wall is set to his unrestricted free agency after receiving a buyout.

The Lakers do have a route to acquiring Wall as a free agent this summer. The Clippers will now get a player in Wall who has been plagued by injuries the past four seasons. Despite news of Wall's intentions to sign with the Clippers, NBA free agency hasn't begun. LeBron James' agents were reportedly unhappy Lakers GM Rob Pelinka didn't complete a deadline deal that would have sent Russell Westbrook to Houston for Wall. Wall's buyout also comes on the heels of Kyrie Irving announcing his intention to opt in on his player option with the Brooklyn Nets. The Lakers were rumored to be attempting a sign-and-trade. That means Wall is not a member of the Clippers. And the Los Angeles Lakers will put a full court press to change Wall's mind. There apparently will be no courtship of Wall's services, if Wojnarowski's report is accurate.

WOW factor? John Wall is bought out. (The Dream Shake)

Whatever payment schedule John Wall may receive in his agreement with the Rockets, it’s my understanding that this buyout will count only against this year’s salary cap. Yes, he was well-compensated to stay home, but as we know, in today’s NBA, remuneration means little in terms of the behavior, and willingness to play basketball, of many. The Rockets long-distance relationship with John Wall has come to a non-tear-stained end. One can see the idea of a partnership with James Harden, Christian Wood, Eric Gordon and I suppose, Daniel Theis, as the basis of an interesting team at least. Wall also was a perfect gentleman about not playing basketball. This is nothing against Wall. The Rockets asked wall not to play.

With the Clippers, he might slide right into the starting lineup alongside Leonard and George. It's unknown if the Warriors are one of the "other teams" that were interested in Wall, but he would have filled a need as a guard off the bench. The Houston Rockets and John Wall have agreed to a buyout of his contract where he'll take a pay cut of about $6.5 million. That's not a bad deal ...

The Clippers won’t need Wall to score 20 ppg, and if he can settle into a lesser scoring role, this team could potentially be the biggest threat to the Golden State Warriors in the west next year. The biggest issue for LA is likely to be one that’s lingered for the last couple of years. So this situation in Los Angeles with the Clippers might be the best scenario for Wall to make a complete comeback. If Wall can come in and be the primary ball-handler and playmaker, this could work out for the best. He gets most of the money he’s owed by Houston, and he gets to sing and play for a contender this year in the LA Clippers. Once he clears waivers, of course. If not for injuries to Paul George and Kawhi Leonard this past season, who knows how far the Clippers could’ve gone.
