Mariners-Angels brawl: Punches thrown, eight ejections made as ... (CBS sports.com)

There was a brouhaha in Anaheim on Sunday, complete with an odd throw of sunflower seeds.

This is the eighth game in the last 11 days between the two teams. Winker appeared to be arguing with Phil Nevin, the interim Angels manager. The Angels star was unhappy and said as much after the game. Mariners pitcher Erik Swanson said the pitch just got away from him. A pitch sailed close to Mike Trout's head on its way to the backstop in the ninth inning. I don't know if that's the intent, but…

Angels starter Noah Syndergaard and Rodriguez were among those who needed to be held back from a big group of players. Anthony Rendon, recovering from season-ending wrist surgery, charged out with the rest of his team, shoving his left hand into Winker’s face.

Along with both managers, the Angels lost Wantz, closer Raisel Iglesias and reliever Ryan Tepera, while the Mariners lost Winker, Rodriguez and J.P. Crawford — three of the first four hitters in their lineup. Servais and Gonzales both felt the umpires erred by not ejecting Wantz immediately. How MLB will inevitably get the suspensions for the Angels-Mariners ... (Lookout Landing)

Sunday's Angels-Mariners brawl was one of the ugliest we've seen in a while, but here's the real kicker: it was also entirely preventable.

Were this a civil case, the Mariners would have a compelling argument to prove that they don’t deserve any consequences. And they can do the impossible and acknowledge their umpiring crew made a mistake and allowed things to get to this point. And when Wantz threw at Julio Rodríguez, the Mariners’ young star—who was not the first batter of the game, meaning they specifically targeted Julio—that satisfied another condition of a first-degree crime, “intent.” The decision to insert an opener—an expendable soldier in a overly-dramatized, whipped-up battle—shows premeditation, and in actually hitting Julio, demonstrates both intent, and a disregard for the safety of one of the game’s great young stars. The umpiring crew will continue on their merry way, and at some point this whole scene will unfold again, because there is virtually no accountability for the people charged with keeping players on the field safe. The Mariners have a policy of not retaliating, because retaliating is stupid and also, usually the retaliator is the one who gets the outsized punishment. They then should have immediately ejected Andrew Wantz the second he threw at Julio Rodríguez. Then Wantz isn’t in the game to hit Winker, and a whole different series of events unfold.

You might be wondering where Sunday's brawl between the Angels and Mariners ranks in Seattle sports history. Here are five other notable Seattle sports ...

That resulted in a lot of shouting between the offense and defense (notably longtime close friends Sherman and Doug Baldwin), with the offense feeling the defense had been playing too physically all day. Coach Pete Carroll eventually restored order, though hard feelings continued — a bit later in practice, Sherman intercepted a Russell Wilson pass and returned it for a pick-six, flipping the ball underhanded to Wilson, yelling at him along the way. Many players jumped into the fracas and even more punches were thrown. The Seahawks have had their fair share of squabbles in the last decade. Along the way, Raiders linebacker Winston Moss let his frustration grow and threw what was generally described as a sucker punch at Seattle quarterback Rick Mirer. When Seahawks offensive tackle Ray Roberts jumped in to defend Mirer, a brawl ensued. Certainly, none was more costly to the team’s pocketbook. Walters left with an arm injury and later had his arm in a sling. The fracas began when McDaniel tried to steal the ball from Matthews and ran into him, knocking each to the floor. In that fracas, which lasted roughly 18 minutes, six players — three on each side — and both managers were ejected. Maybe two of the most infamous were the brief fight at the end of the 2015 Super Bowl loss that resulted in the ejection of Bruce Irvin and a 2017 defeat at Jacksonville when several fights broke out late and Seattle defensive lineman Quinton Jefferson had to be prevented from going into the stands to fight two fans who threw garbage his way. The two teams actually had some long-simmering tension dating to an incident in a spring-training game the year before when the teams had two fights in one day. Some of the Orioles noted later that Seattle starter Chris Bosio had buzzed a few of their hitters earlier in the game.
