Phillies' Bryce Harper exits game after HBP – Philly Sports (Philly Sports Network)

The month of June began with news that Phillies' second baseman Jean Segura was going onto the Injured List with a broken finger.

Harper has carried the Phillies on his back through thick and thin over the past few seasons. After flying out to right field in the first inning, Harper worked to a 2-2 count as he looked to give the Phillies their second base runner of the day. With one out in the top of the fourth inning, Harper stepped up to the plate.

Harper Suffers Fractured Thumb, Out Indefinitely for Phillies (NBC10 Boston)

The Phillies' most irreplaceable player is out indefinitely. Bryce Harper's left thumb was fractured by a 97 mph fastball Saturday night.

The result of Saturday's game, a 4-2 Phillies win, was almost an afterthought in light of Harper's injury. The Phils will need more from several hitters, specifically Nick Castellanos, who has fallen short of expectations to this point. The Phillies just got a taste of it earlier this week when they scored a combined five runs in three games he missed with a blister. He also missed time earlier this week after a blister on his hand became infected. It's obviously going to be tough but I think that this ballclub can handle that type of blow. Visibly frustrated, Harper said something to Snell, who was apologetic and replied that it was unintentional.

How long Bryce Harper will be out will be one of many questions the Philadelphia Phillies are hoping to have answered very soon.

Another big question will be who will step up in Harper’s absence, no matter how long that will be. How long Harper is out will likely determine that question as Dombrowski did reference how the Braves won the World Series last season without star outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. by rebuilding its outfield at the trade deadline. The biggest question, of course, is how long Harper will be out of action, and that’s a question that will not be answered until Philadelphia returns home following Sunday’s game in San Diego. In Philadelphia, Harper’s thumb will reportedly undergo futher evaluation.

The Padres have given him very little in the way of run support. “He knows how I feel,” Snell said. It was only last season that Snell endured similar struggles in the first half, only to break out as the Padres’ most dominant pitcher in August and early September. Snell was efficient and electric -- the way he looked late last season, the way he looked when he was Cy Young Blake Snell in 2018. “He just had one off inning -- the leadoff homer, and they nicked him up for a couple runs. On Saturday night, both runs came courtesy of Jorge Alfaro's two-run double in the fifth. As dominant as he’d been for four innings, Snell again found himself on the wrong end of a decision, dropping to 0-5 on the season, with the Padres having lost all seven of his starts. He might even be the life of it. Snell quickly completed the fourth inning with a double-play grounder, but he came unglued in the fifth. He surrendered another in the sixth. And then, with one out in the fourth inning, Snell threw a 2-2 fastball to Bryce Harper, and it got away from the left-hander, up and in. It definitely changed the game a little bit.”

Phillies trade ideas with Bryce Harper injured (NBC Sports)

With Bryce Harper out, the Phillies are going to need a bat either at DH or in the outfield, and you can bet Dave Dombrowski is working the phones.

They will need similar contributions from their existing nucleus and similar help from the front office to survive the loss of Harper. A quick healing left thumb would also help. As badly as the Phils need to improve to prevent this $230 million investment from playing golf in October, they do need to be protective of Mick Abel and Andrew Painter, who could blossom into the core of a starting rotation in Philadelphia in a few years. It's popular to the point of cliché to mention that the Atlanta Braves suffered a huge blow with the loss of Ronald Acuña Jr. (and others) last year and that the remainder of their roster, players like Freddie Freeman and Austin Riley, as well as GM Alex Anthopoulos, who remade the outfield at that trade deadline, stepped up to save the season and help rally the club to a World Series title. He came to get to the postseason -- now -- and his desire matches that of ownership. Can the Phils afford to use O'Hoppe as a trade chip with Realmuto showing signs of decline? Baltimore could move Trey Mancini or Anthony Santander. The Royals could trade Whit Merrifield or Andrew Benintendi. The Cubs could deal an interesting package of outfielder Ian Happ and reliever David Robertson. Ditto for Arizona, which could move outfielder David Peralta and reliever Mark Melancon, who has struggled this season but led the majors with 39 saves in 2021. You can bet Dombrowski and his cabinet have already touched base with the Washington Nationals, who could move Josh Bell or Nelson Cruz. Staying in the NL East, Jesus Aguilar could be attractive if the Miami Marlins sell. Like Gillick in 2007, the front office needs to go to work here and prevent this team from dying on the vine. A more complicated break, one that would require surgery and pinning of the break, would keep him out longer. In the latter two cases, the Phillies rebounded nicely from a tough break. A lefty bat would be nice, but production, from either side, is key. The injury could keep him out for up to 12 weeks because the fracture was "displaced" and required pinning.

Harper's injury rocks more than just Phillies (MLB.com)

The news Bryce Harper had broken his thumb was almost numbing, by the time we heard it. We'd seen how awful that hit-by-pitch was, how Harper reacted, ...

At the end of the 2019 season, after Harper had hit 35 homers in his first year for the Phillies, he needed to average, over the course of the 12 years left on his contract, 31.75 homers a year to reach 600. As long as he was hitting as well as he was, and as long as the Phillies were still in the pennant chase, it made sense to hold off on the surgery and let him DH. But now? He had a chance to get to 600, but that chance has gotten a lot slimmer. Harper was running away with the first-ever National League designated-hitter spot, far ahead of second-place William Contreras of the Braves and third-place Albert Pujols of the Cardinals. Harper, because of name recognition alone, might still end up winning at the DH spot -- though that isn’t assured now -- but it won’t matter if he does, because he won’t be able to play. So if your favorite player doesn’t get voted in in the NL, he would have been blocked by Harper at the DH spot; he won’t now. But if they fall out, he could be ready to play the outfield again next year. If the Phillies are still in the race, Harper could come back when his thumb is healed and DH again. But if the Phillies fall back without their best hitter -- and while that’s possible, remember, this is absolutely not what happened to the Braves last year -- that’s nothing but great news for the Giants, Padres, Dodgers, Cardinals, Brewers and (especially) the Braves and Marlins, who now might get to face a weakened Phillies team as they’re trying to grab one of those three Wild Card spots. Harper is out for at least six weeks, and probably more -- the Phillies have not announced an exact timeline, but a broken thumb is not an injury where you can typically speed up the healing significantly. Well, it turns out the Phillies have an opening at DH again. The irony of the absence of Harper -- one of the few Phillies heading into the season who is actually a good defender -- perhaps improving the Phillies’ unreliable defense is thick. This had forced great hitters, but defensive liabilities, like Kyle Schwarber and Nick Castellanos, to regularly play the field.

Bryce Harper Reportedly Likely To Require Thumb Surgery (MLB Trade Rumors)

Phillies star Bryce Harper fractured his left thumb on a hit-by-pitch Saturday night, a development that necessitated an immediate injured list stint.

The Phils recalled Mickey Moniak over the weekend to join Odúbel Herrera and Matt Vierling as other options for interim skipper Rob Thomson. Philadelphia grabbed Oscar Mercado off waivers from the Guardians this afternoon to add a center field-capable depth player to the mix. On the one hand, it’s encouraging to hear that Harper anticipates making a return this season even if he does need to undergo a procedure. Even in the (seemingly unlikely) scenario where Harper avoids surgery, he’s looking at a four-to-six week absence at minimum, per the Inquirer.
