He managed a comeback in Game 4 of the Cup Final and scored the overtime winner. The Avalanche had 10 different players score at least one goal in the Cup Final, and 17 registered a point or more (including Kuemper). The Lightning responded with a lopsided 6-2 win of their own in Game 3 but couldn't outlast Colorado in a 3-2 overtime loss in Game 4. Vasilevskiy rebounded from a subpar performance in Game 1 (.895 SV%) to be Tampa Bay's best player from there. Colorado secured a 2-0 lead over Tampa Bay with a 4-3 overtime win in Game 1 and 7-0 drubbing in Game 2. Colorado finished with a 30-23 edge in the game. It fit a theme for the Avalanche as well to hoist hockey's chalice on enemy ice. Tampa Bay was making its third consecutive appearance in the Cup Final following back-to-back championships in 2020 and 2021. That marked Colorado's first regulation lead of the series since Game 3. Nathan MacKinnon tallied the equalizer with a one-timer from the left circle past Andrei Vasilevskiy. Determining whether Paul had possession was not reviewable, so the goal stood to tie the score 1-1. Darcy Kuemper registered 22 saves in the victory.

Avalanche dethrones the Lightning, claims Stanley Cup for third time (The Washington Post)

The Avalanche clinched the franchise's first title since 2001 with a Game 6 victory in Tampa.

To be in this position and to be remembered as a great team means the world.” When the series flipped to Tampa for Games 3 and 4, the Lightning got redemption, throttling the Avalanche, 6-2, in a Game 3 beatdown. “We always stuck to the plan, and this is the result,” forward Nazem Kadri said. Colorado played the kind of period expected of a team eager to end a series. It reached the finals in three straight seasons, which hadn’t been accomplished since Edmonton did it from 1983 to 1985. The Lightning tried to push for the tying goal in the third period but found few opportunities. It was MacKinnon’s second goal of the series — his first was off his skate in Game 4. Colorado’s toughest test was its second-round matchup with the St. Louis Blues. If not for Darren Helm’s game-winner with 5.6 seconds left in Game 6, the Avalanche could have faced a do-or-die Game 7. In 2016-17, Colorado finished a distant last in the NHL, managing just 48 points. Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy was excellent in Game 5 and continued his stout performance in Game 6, but Colorado was too much for him — and the Lightning’s defense — to handle. Kuemper maintained his composure in the tight game, making a handful of timely saves to finish with 22 for Colorado. TAMPA — As the final seconds ticked off the clock, the players on the Colorado Avalanche bench streamed onto the ice in triumphant glee.

Colorado Avalanche Unseat Tampa Bay to Win the Stanley Cup (The New York Times)

TAMPA, Fla. — Ten teams over the last three years have attempted to eliminate the Tampa Bay Lightning in the postseason as they pursued a dynasty.

From training camp, the question for the Avalanche surrounded the team’s ability to overcome past failure and finally win a title. This time, it went to Landeskog first, and then he passed it to Johnson, who has been with Colorado since a midseason trade in 2010-11. Landeskog, one of the longest-tenured members of the team along with defenseman Erik Johnson, praised Sakic, who has proved to be nearly as adept at creating a winner from the front office as he was with skates on his feet and a stick in his hand. MacKinnon was tabbed with the first pick two years later and Colorado selected Rantanen with the 10th pick in 2015. But until now, the group was unable to convert regular-season success into playoff glory, falling in the second round in each of the previous three years. As general manager, Sakic is responsible for building a team that has been widely recognized for several years as one of the emerging powerhouses in the league. “I didn’t want to be laying on the ice in the middle of our zone when they went down to score. Sakic, who also played seven seasons with the organization before its move from Quebec, was on hand once again to share in the latest celebration, this time as the general manager and architect of a club so deep in talent that it meant Tampa Bay had finally met its match. The high-flying Avalanche defeated the gallant Lightning, 2-1, in Game 6 of the finals, to capture the Stanley Cup, one of sports’ most elusive and enduring trophies. After all the mental and physical pounding, they finally gave way to a new champion. TAMPA, Fla. — Ten teams over the last three years have attempted to eliminate the Tampa Bay Lightning in the postseason as they pursued a dynasty. “You want to beat the best,” Sakic said.

The Avalanche are expected to return the core of their championship roster, although goalie Darcy Kuemper is a free agent.

Cogliano speech helped Avalanche regroup, win Stanley Cup (NHL.com)

Andrew Cogliano felt he needed to say something. The veteran forward wasn't happy with how the Colorado Avalanche played in Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Final, ...

Our guys from the second he walked into the room, looked up to this guy because of the way he handles himself, him and [forward] Darren Helm, what they've put in and how they take care of themselves, how they prepare, how serious everything is for them and how much they want to win." "He addressed how he felt last game and I think we all resonated with that, where we were maybe looking a little ahead and thinking about this [Cup-winning celebration], thinking about this rather than being in the moment. Cogliano was acquired by the Avalanche from the San Jose Sharks on March 21. We lost him in the Edmonton series, he breaks his hand, has surgery and he's the first guy back, working to try to get back and help our team. And that message was pushed by our leaders," Cogliano said after the Avalanche defeated the Lightning 2-1 in Game 6 to win the Stanley Cup for the first time since 2001. "It was more just, we've worked so hard to get here playing the right way, let's be in the moment, win or lose, no regrets.

Avalanche, Lightning show importance of making smart trades (The Washington Post)

The Colorado Avalanche winning the Stanley Cup showed the value of speed and skill in a league dramatically tilting in that direction.

Except this year, when the Avalanche’s depth and talent was simply too much to overcome. Don’t bet against the Lightning reaching a fourth consecutive final and going for a third championship in four years. And the Lightning may do this to more teams next year. They needed the bulk and grit provided by Manson, center Nazem Kadri and others to endure the Lightning. It just adds up to just a hard team to play against.” “Joe and C-Mac did a great job of picking up some pieces along the way that really, really made us hard to play against,” Landeskog said.
