AEW Forbidden Door 2022: Results, Live Updates and Match Ratings (CNET)

Jon Moxley takes on Hiroshi Tanahashi for the interim AEW Championship.

Umino put Jericho in the Walls of Jericho, but it was broken up by Suzuki and Guevara. Jericho broke up the pin, but he ate a Shotgun Dropkick from Umino. Guevara hit Umino with a Springboard Cutter, but then Wheeler Yuta surprised Guevara with a top-rope splash for a two count -- and the first "this is awesome!" They showed footage of Jericho attacking Shota Umino in New Japan back when Umino was just a trainee, which was very cool. The first big pop came when Eddie Kingston tagged in to confront Jericho, but Jericho tagged out to Suzuki. The crowd popped huge for it. Packed with action, it was a fun six-man tag that set the tone for what's sure to be an insane night. This was a chaotic opening match, but in the best way.

AEW: 1 fun fact about every match at Forbidden Door (ClutchPoints)

Soon, fans will trickle into the United Center, the lights will dim then rise, and nine matches – plus four more on the pre-show – will take place with hundreds ...

While White is a very different performer in 2022 than in 2017, as he went from wrestling the Bullet Club to leading it, that history can be hard to overcome, even for the “Catalyst of Professional Wrestling.” Are you an AEW fan who wondered why the match for the AEW Women’s Championship Match is between two members of Tony Khan’s promotion instead of Thunder Rosa versus the best female performer NJPW has to offer? Now granted, that might be easier said than done, as PAC, Miro, and Black are all very skilled performers, but it will be nice to see Connors on a massive stage, as the fifth-year pro deserves more recognition. While there’s no knowing if the duo of Sting and Darby Allin will continue to go by the moniker, or if this will be their first and final time using the name in a trios match with Shingo Takagi opposite The Bullet Club – The Young Bucks plus El Phantasmo – bringing back the obscure faction is an interesting addition to Forbidden Door. Well, if you’re a fan of WCW it just might, as it was also the name of a short-lived faction featuring the likes of Sting, Lex Lugar, and the Steiner Brothers back in 1990. Yup; at least one match features a mystery entrant and there will certainly be more than a few more surprises throughout the day too.

Yuya Uemura, Alex Coughlin, The DKC and Kevin Knight - FTR (Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler) (c) vs. Black lands the black mist onto Miro. PAC lands Black Arrow onto Black, who had Connors in a submission. Now Cobb comes in to face Harwood. Romero and Harwood now face off. Connors now attacking Black and lands a powerslam. Kingston back in and lands a spinning backfist to Suzuki. It is chaos as everyone is down. Umino goes for the Walls of Jericho. Umino gets kicked and headbutted. It is only Billy Gunn and Caster in the ring since Billy's sons went to look for Danhausen. As Lee gets Kanemaru up, Desperado attacks Lee's knee, and Kanemaru lands a DDT. On one leg, Lee kicks Desperado off of him, and Swerve attacks the NJPW star. Kanemaru goes for the knee of Lee and has Lee down for the Figure-Four. Desperado has Swerve in a submission but Lee grabs Desperado and throws him onto Kanemaru. Sunset flip attempt, and Lee attempts a double-team move. Tanahashi is a former multi-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion and one of the top stars of NJPW. Moxley was the second-ever AEW World Champion.

AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door 2022 Results: Winners, Grades ... (Bleacher Report)

Welcome to Bleacher Report's coverage and recap of the first-ever AEW and NJPW joint pay-per-view, Forbidden Door. Hopefully, this is the first of many...

A few minutes into the match, Harwood was escorted to the back at one point, so he may have suffered an injury. The match wasn't perfect by any means, but it was as entertaining as it needed to be. After hitting Black with a 450, Pac locked Connors in the Brutalizer for the win. - Suzuki's entrance music alone is over with the crowd more than a lot of stars on the roster. This match was a fight from the moment the bell rang. This match was chaos, but the good kind of chaos. Actually, saying they obeyed the rules is a bit of a stretch. Caster and Billy were able to get in some offense here and there, but it wasn't much. Lee and Swerve were able to secure the win before Team Taz taunted them from the crowd. The physicality was good here because both guys have the size and power to really make their hits look good, but it didn't have much else to it. Goto and Yoshi-Hashi scored the win to kick the show off. The last few minutes were the best part of the match.

Black tried to lock Connors in a hold, but Pac came off the top with Black Arrow, then locked Connors in the Brutalizer to get the tap out and the All Atlantic Championship. Great match. Guevara hit a knee on Umino and Jericho hit the code breaker on Umino for a near fall. Miro dumped Black to the floor, then caught Pac with a spinebuster for a near fall. Connors hit Miro with a spear out of nowhere to sent Miro through the table. Miro set up the matcha kick, but PAC caught him with a superkick, then took out Black with a plancha. Cobb hit the standing moonsault on Romero, then tossed Beretta into a german suplex from Cobb for a near fall. Caster finally made his own comeback and got the tag to Billy Gunn. Knight hit Gunn with a dropkick, but Gunn came back with a Famouser on Couglin. Caster hit the top rope elbow on Coughlin for the pin. Comoroto got Archer up for a gorilla press, but Archer slid out and took Comoroto down with a boot, then sent him to the floor with a flying tackle. The match settled down in the ring to Guevara and Yuta. Kingston tried to interfere and got a huge chant from the crowd. Comoroto went to the top, but Archer caught him with a knee, then awkwardly got him in position for the Blackout and scored the pin. Marshall went for a 450 splash that missed, and HASHI took Solo down with a dropkick to the knees. YOSHI-HASHI got the tag and took Marshall down with a head hunter (top rope blockbuster) for a near fall.

During the AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door pay-per-view, Claudio Castagnoli (FKA Cesaro in WWE) debuted when he was the mystery opponent against Zack Sabre Jr., who was slated to face Bryan Danielson, tonight. Before his decade-long run in WWE, Castagnoli was a star on the independent scene, most notably having runs in Ring Of Honor, PWG, CZW, and Chikara. Castagnoli initially signed with WWE in 2011 where he quickly rose the ranks, going from the company’s development territory FCW and quickly making his main roster debut in April 2012. The match against Sabre Jr. would mark Castagnoli’s first appearance in a non-WWE ring since signing with the company in 2011.

The idea of Cesaro being that addition fits right in line with what William Regal has said publicly in recent months. Backstage News On Jon Moxley's Original AEW X NJPW Forbidden ... (Wrestling Inc.)

Jon Moxley ended up being able to main event the AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door event, but he was reportedly set for another bout originally.

One of the biggest blows came to CM Punk, who was originally going to main event the show against Hiroshi Tanahashi for the AEW World Championship which he had recently won from Hangman Page. Unfortunately, Punk suffered an injury that forced him off the show, and that led to Tony Khan changing the main event to be for an interim AEW World Championship after he opted not to vacate the title from Punk. Tanahashi remained in that match, and the AEW President put Moxley in against him, which was a match the former WWE Superstar ended up winning. Jon Moxley was able to walk away from the AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door event as the interim AEW World Champion, but he was originally slated to be in the opening match of the show according to Dave Meltzer of the “ Wrestling Observer Radio.”

The scary thing about AEW, NJPW's superb 'Forbidden Door' show (New York Post)

Injuries left a number of AEW and New Japan Pro-Wrestling's top stars unavailable to perform in their first-ever joint show. It didn't stop the show from ...

Except for during the very early stages of the company, PAC has been occupied with a lot of faction feuds and multi-man matches. Ospreay had his way with and mocked Cassidy early to build heat, and it only made the gorgeous strings of combos and counter wrestling that followed that much more meaningful. It feels like a potential winner-take-all match with Matt and Nick Jackson – the AEW world champions – would be possible at “All Out.” Will Ospreay for the IWGP United States championship had show-stealing potential, and it delivered on all it of it. It all ended with the surprise return of the legendary Katsuyori Shibata, who has wrestled sparingly recently due to injury, to save Cassidy from an attack by Ospreay and United Empire. Castagnoli is the newest member of the Blackpool Combat Club in a dream stable with Moxley, Danielson and William Regal. Khan said during the post-show media scrum that he originally talked to Castagnoli about debuting at Ring of Honor’s upcoming “Death Before Dishonor” show. The King of Swing got a huge pop from the Chicago crowd — and plenty of tweets from WWE talent, including Becky Lynch — in his first appearance since letting his WWE contract run out in February. He showed off his signature strength, carrying Sabre Jr. up the ring steps and then bumping him over the top rope. Cash Wheeler and Dax Harwood have won seven different tag team championships from the top wrestling companies in the world. They now hold the AAA, ROH and IWGP tag team titles after defeating the teams of Jeff Cobb-Great-O-Khan and Rocky Romero-Trent Beretta on Sunday. Each team was given moments where you thought they would win before FTR hit the Big Rig to bring home the New Japan belts. After spending his entire first title reign performing in front of zero fans, he became the first man to get a second go with the belt as he defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi — the competitor he’s been chasing for years — in a very good main event. The tensions between the Bullet Club-rooted groups grew even more when Jay White pinned Adam Cole to win the four-way match that also included “Hangman” Adam Page and Kazuchika Okada to retain his IWGP world heavyweight championship. It made the show’s last impression feel more like a go-home show than a pay-per-view.

AEW: Seven Best Moments at Forbidden Door (Comicbook.com)

The athletes of All Elite Wrestling and New Japan Pro Wrestling collided in Chicago, Illinois on Sunday night at the first-ever Forbidden Door event.

AEW introduced a brand new title belt at Forbidden Door with the All-Atlantic Championship. It seemed for quite a while that Malakai Black or Miro would become the first-ever All-Atlantic Champion, but PAC pulled the rug out from under everyone and earned the belt. In a matter of minutes, Claudio reminded everyone exactly what they'd been missing in his time away from wrestling, and we're already counting down the days until Blood and Guts so we can see him in action once again. Just about every wrestling fan on the planet assumed that the wrestler in question would be Claudio Castagnoli (fka Cesaro). His shoulder was taped up, but it didn't stop him from helping his best friend and partner Cash Wheeler give FTR their seventh star. Dax Harwood has become one of the most beloved wrestlers in AEW, so to say that it was a sting to see him exit the ROH and IWGP Tag Team Championship match was an understatement. prev

Claudio Castagnoli Makes AEW Debut At Forbidden Door (Game Rant)

Claudio Castagnoli (formerly Cesaro) is the newest member of the Blackpool Combat Club after debuting at AEW X NJPW: Forbidden Door.

Despite the advantage of the Jericho Appreciation Society heading into Dynamite, the Blackpool Combat Club will be at home in a match as violent as Blood & Guts, and Castagnoli will have a few scores of his own to settle, including with his teammate Eddie Kingston. Castagnoli is also a former WWE Tag Team Champion, WWE United States Champion, and winner of the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royale. Even after winning several championships in WWE, the company's treatment of Castagnoli was heavily criticized, as many believed he had the makings of a main eventer and future world champion. Danielson promised that Sabre Jr.'s mystery opponent at Forbidden Door was an in-ring technician, and Castagnoli's reputation as one of the best professional wrestlers in the world proved Danielson's statement correct. Castagnoli is a former Ring of Honor World Tag Team Champion, and given AEW President Tony Khan's purchase of the company, Castagnoli may seek more ROH gold. Castagnoli made his AEW debut at Forbidden Door as the mystery opponent for Zack Sabre Jr. Castagnoli was the hand-picked selection to fill in for an injured Bryan Danielson, who Sabre Jr. had originally called out for a match. Castagnoli has also worked with other pro-wrestling promotions Ring of Honor, PWG, and Chikara throughout his career.

Top AEW Star Potentially Suffers Concussion At Forbidden Door (Wrestling Inc.)

AEW is currently dealing with a laundry list of injuries across its roster, which is how Moxley ended up in the main event of Forbidden Door to begin with, as reigning AEW World Champion CM Punk had to be taken off the show due to a foot injury. On top of that, Bryan Danielson is currently out of action with an undisclosed issue, which is why he was replaced at Forbidden Door by the debuting Claudio Castagnoli. Moxley closed the show against the New Japan Pro Wrestling star in an entertaining headline match that saw him capture the title, but he was badly busted open during the encounter, visibly bleeding a lot throughout the match.

AEW-NJPW Forbidden Door 2022 Reaction: 5 Thoughts – TJR ... (TJR Wrestling)

Reacting to the AEW-NJPW Forbidden Door pay-per-view that saw Jon Moxley become Interim AEW World Champion, FTR won more gold and more.

Like I said earlier, from a purely in-ring perspective, it was one of the best shows of the year. It seems to be leading to a match with the Young Bucks for all the gold. She’s always delivered on Pay Per View, but it feels like she isn’t a priority when it comes to airtime on Dynamite. That needs to change moving forward or get the title on someone you will invest the time in. It was a great show match-wise, but I don’t think it did a lot to establish NJPW stars to an American audience due to the buildup leading to the show. DUDES WITH ATTITUDES DEFEAT BULLET CLUB:If you thought there was any chance a team with Sting on it was going to lose, you haven’t been watching the product. Seeing Okada in a big match on a national stage was a treat. I felt he didn’t get nearly the push he deserved in WWE, but he still had a pretty great career there. This was the match I was most looking forward to. He got a pretty big pop from the fans in the United Center as he came out to face Zack Sabre Jr. Like I said, solid opener but you knew who was going to win as soon as they announced the stipulation. As soon as they added the stipulation of the man advantage, you could tell who was going to get the win here. I’m still frustrated with the lackluster build to the show, but it is what it is.

Jay White successfully defended his IWGP Heavyweight Championship at the AEW x NJPW Forbidden Door pay-per-view and spoke about his future with All Elite Wrestling afterward.

Kazuchika Okada Issues Interesting Statement About The Forbidden ... (Wrestling Inc.)

Okada thanked Chicago and AEW as he heads back to Japan for the G1 Climax, and updated fans on the status of the "forbidden door."

NJPW is about to head into a busy summer with the largest G1 Climax in some time, so it would make sense that they have other priorities than the “forbidden door,” though it should be noted Lance Archer will be traveling through said door to the tournament. Okada including AEW in the thank you message, as well as the “see you next time” closer certainly suggests that there will be a follow-up event, hopefully with both locker rooms closer to 100 percent. “See you next time,” Okada finished, adding to the speculation of a possible sequel to Forbidden Door, possibly next year.
