Lakers News: Pacers Lottery Pick Bennedict Mathurin Says LeBron ... (LakersNation.com)

Indiana Pacers guard Bennedict Mathurin said Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James will have to prove he's better than him.

James will surely keep a close eye on that first matchup with the Pacers and add something special for Mathurin. It’s similar to former Lakers lottery pick D’Angelo Russell, who often oozed confidence in the Purple and Gold. He averaged 17.7 points in his sophomore year with the Wildcats and was named Pac-12 Player of the Year. Christie is a 6-foot-6 lanky guard with strong 3-and D potential. Entering his 20th season in the NBA, Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has seemingly little left to prove. He’s going to have to show me he’s better than me.”

Bennedict Mathurin on LeBron James: Nobody 'is better than me' (LeBron Wire)

The Los Angeles Lakers' LeBron James may not be the best player in basketball anymore, but at worst, he is one of the top 5-10 players in the NBA.

A 6-foot-6 wing, Mathurin is certainly someone who has the potential to be a very good player in the NBA. He is an excellent shooter, and he has the ability to create off the dribble at a pretty high level. He certainly had an exceptional individual season, putting up 30.3 points, 8.2 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game. If he puts up anything close to those numbers next year, and the Lakers somehow become a contender again, don’t be surprised if James is in the conversion of being arguably the best in the world again.

“Everything I do is for my brother,” Mathurin said. Mathurin said he always had a chip on his shoulder. It was hard for my mom, my sister, and my whole family. I don’t think anybody is better than me. It’s another to be delusional. It’s one thing to be confident.

Then, somewhere in-between those two outlooks, we have a player who has the right amount of arrogance you need to be great but who might also be poking the bear just a bit too much for someone who hasn’t played a game yet. Regardless, Mathurin is lighting a fire right out of the gate. Mathurin will pair with a strong, younger core on the Pacers roster that could provide some dangerous combinations moving forward.

Pacers rookie Bennedict Mathurin wants to feel LeBron James' presence this upcoming season when Indiana takes on the Lakers.

James has had plenty of verbal spars in his career and typically wins it when it counts, notably against Jimmy Butler in the 2020 NBA Finals and more with Warriors guard Klay Thompson during the 2016 Finals. James would go on to win both of those titles. I don’t think anybody is better than me. Just prior to the 2022 NBA Draft, Mathurin began talking about his excitement to compete against the Lakers forward.

Picking a fight with the baddest on the block is never a good idea, but that's what the Pacers' rookie did. The question now is, 'how will it end?'

On the other hand the rookie will have to prove himself, before he can even consider the challenge or possible lesson that he may face when he finally squares up against LeBron James and co. Selected with the No. 6 overall pick in the 2022 NBA Draft by the Indiana Pacers, it’s clear that the rookie is no slouch. ‘King James’ averaged 30.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game this last season and though the Lakers ultimately capitulated in what was perhaps their worst season in recent memory, the fact remains that James would be a welcome in any team in the league.
