Knicks in middle of Jalen Duren NBA Draft trade chaos (New York Post)

Mass hysteria broke out on Twitter after Duren was drafted at No. 13 by the Hornets with reports simultaneously linking him to the Knicks and Pistons.

However, Marc Stein then reported the move would help the Knicks free up salary cap space in their pursuit of Jalen Brunson. It turned out to be both. The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported that the Hornets “traded Jalen Duren to the Knicks,” while ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski wrote “the Pistons are acquiring” the Memphis University center.

Taken with the 58th pick, Sims averaged 2.2 points and 4.1 rebounds across 41 games and five starts. There was genuine excitement when McBride, a projected first-round pick, fell to the Knicks at No. 36. Limited to 46 games because of injuries and a bout with COVID-19, the former Houston star shot 38.6 percent from long range, made six starts and averaged six points in 17.1 minutes. In time, the 25th overall pick could turn out to be a find, especially if he can stay healthy. In 37 EuroLeague games (35 as a reserve) for Barcelona FC, Jokubaitis averaged 7.2 points and 2.6 assists, with 1.7 turnovers in 17 minutes. He came to them with the reputation as a stout defender, but he was rarely used, averaging just 9.3 minutes in 40 games.

Will the Knicks trade up for Shaedon Sharpe? (Posting and Toasting)

Yesterday, Ian Begley speculated about whether the New York Knicks might move up in tonight's NBA Draft to grab Shaedon Sharpe.

If the Knicks are willing to give up enough assets, they can get up to No. 4 or No. 5. Although Sharpe sat out during his one year at Kentucky, he has wowed in workouts and is expected to be taken in the latter half of tonight’s top-ten. A backcourt of Ivey and LaMelo Ball would be exciting, indeed. And Givony proposes that the Thunder are interested in moving up from their 12th spot to acquire Sharpe or Ivey. The idea that OKC could finish tonight with Chet Holmgren and Shaedon Sharpe on their books is sort of astounding. The Kentucky guard worked out for Charlotte. Givony thinks the Hornets would grab him if they can find a way to move up from the 13th spot. The price to trade up to the fourth or fifth pick in the draft will be significant.

Detroit Pistons acquire veteran Kemba Walker from New York ... (ESPN)

The Pistons acquired veteran Kemba Walker on Thursday from the Knicks as part of a three-team trade involving the Hornets, sources said.

Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau dropped Walker from the Knicks' playing rotation in mid-November, and Walker also battled knee soreness in January. The Knicks traded a 2023 conditional first-round pick they received from the Oklahoma City Thunder, plus four second-round picks, to the Hornets for Duren, the Memphis center who was picked No. 13 by Charlotte. New York then traded Duren and Walker to the Pistons for a 2025 conditional Milwaukee Bucks first-round pick. The Detroit Pistons acquired veteran guard Kemba Walker from the New York Knicks as part of a three-team trade involving the Charlotte Hornets that also saw the Pistons acquire the draft rights to Jalen Duren on Thursday night.

Stephen A. Smith has prolonged meltdown, needs consoling after ... (Sporting News)

Here's a comprehensive breakdown on Stephen A. Smith's showing during ABC's broadcast of the 2022 NBA Draft.

Stephen A. Smith didn't just hold his contempt for the Knicks Thursday night. "Although I like all the attributes he brings to the table, when they start questioning your shooting ability, ... that's a potential liability," Smith said. However, with the way Willie Green was able to implement rookies Herb Jones and Jose Alvarado into the rotation despite neither being an elite shooter, it seems at least plausible that Daniels could have a part to play next season. In a draft filled with talent, that just wouldn't do for Smith, who had to be consoled by his ESPN colleagues when he realized the Knicks weren't taking anybody. New York took Ousmane Dieng with the No. 11 pick before sending his rights to the Oklahoma City Thunder. That didn't do a whole lot to assuage Smith and Lee's fears, though. He's fed up with Nets star Kyrie Irving, that much is true. ...We've got picks all over the place. After all, you can never have too many versatile wing defenders. So it was no surprise that Smith, like so many Knicks fans, were pinning their hopes on New York's selection at No. 11. That didn't happen, however. Knicks' 2022 NBA Draft madness all points to Jalen Brunson pursuit (New York Post)

The Knicks didn't trade up for Jaden Ivey. They traded out of the first round entirely in Thursday's NBA draft, all with Jalen Brunson in mind.

ESPN cap guru Bobby Marks reported that the moves will leave the Knicks with $104 million in guaranteed contracts, and the cap is expected to reside at $122 million. Instead, they took Dieng, leading to loud boos from Knicks fans at Barclays Center, and quickly dealt him. Brunson stepped up when star Luka Doncic was out at the start of the playoffs, exploding for 41 points in a Game 2 victory over the Jazz in the opening round. They traded out of the first round entirely in Thursday’s NBA draft, all with Jalen Brunson in mind it appears while adding future protected picks and trading some away all to clear cap space. Amid reports they desperately tried to pry the Purdue superstar guard away from the Pistons, who took him with the fifth pick, the Knicks wound up trading the 11th pick, which was used on French wing Ousmane Dieng, to the Thunder for three conditioning future first-round picks, commissioner Adam Silver announced during the draft. As part of the deal with the Pistons, the Knicks received the Bucks’ first-round pick in 2025.

Finally, the Knicks then flipped the No. 13 pick (Jalen Duren) and Kemba Walker to the Detroit Pistons in a third deal. The question, though, is whether their tunnel vision for a chance to sign Brunson clouded their judgement. While the Knicks do need help now, getting three first round picks in exchange for one is pretty good value. Instead, they decided to trade out of the first round by sending that pick to the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for three future first rounders. Now that the dust has settled, let's take a closer look at all the moves the Knicks made on Thursday. Thursday night was not so straightforward, as the Knicks were the busiest team in the 2022 NBA Draft.

The Knicks are neither close to a finished product nor do they have a legitimate star in their employ. And beyond that, there's no way the Knicks do this without some assurance they have a chance to pry Brunson out of Dallas. If this is what happened, everyone in the Knicks front office needs to be fired immediately. Kemba’s salary for next season — in a contract this front office signed him to — is only $8 million. On Thursday night, the Knicks yet again revealed the truth about themselves. And head coach Tom Thibodeau probably would have ignored either lottery prospect in pursuit of 35 to 43 victories. The only other players to match or exceed those benchmarks: Kevin Durant and Jrue Holiday.

If the 2023 WAS first doesn't convey in 2026, then it becomes Wizards' 2026 and 2027 seconds.

if the 2023 DEN first doesn't convey by 2025, then it becomes Denver's 2025 and 2025 seconds. The Knicks are helplessly, almost hilariously, incapable of mapping out or following through on a coherent vision. The full (and complex) order of operations is as follows, per ESPN's Tim Bontemps: Functionally, the Knicks didn't just trade the 11th overall pick.

The Knicks sent Ousmane Dieng to the Thunder in a trade then mmade another trade with the Pistons and Hornets involving Jalen Duren and Kemba Walker.

Despite trading Duren, Charlotte also got its long-needed center with the No. 15 pick: Duke’s Mark Williams. Oklahoma City is overflowing with future picks and could justify overpaying to get a desired player. Both New York at No. 11 and Charlotte at No. 13 had good reason to trade those picks. The Pistons come out well ahead in this deal. Giannis Antetokounmpo is still under contract through then, and, even if the bottom falls out on the Bucks, the pick is top-four protected. The Knicks are paying a fairly substantial price to unload Walker’s $9,165,471 salary.

Report: New York Knicks trading Kemba Walker to Detroit Pistons (NBC Sports)

The New York Knicks reportedly are dealing Kemba Walker and No. 13 pick Jalen Duren to the Detroit Pistons in a draft-day trade.

Oklahoma City has two more selections in the 2022 draft at Nos. 30 and 34. The organization took Gonzaga big man Chet Holmgren with the No. 2 pick. Williams, meanwhile, averaged 18.0 points and 4.4 rebounds per game with the Broncos in his junior season. He averaged 11.6 points and 3.5 assists across 37 games before being shut down for the season in February. Earlier in the draft, the Knicks selected French forward Ousmane Dieng with the No. 11 pick and quickly sent him to the Thunder. New York reportedly received multiple first-round picks from Oklahoma City’s treasure trove of assets in the deal. The New York Knicks reportedly dealt the point guard, along with No. 13 pick Jalen Duren, to the Detroit Pistons.

Who are the Knicks building a monster trade package or free agency ... (Daily Knicks)

The New York Knicks opted to not make a selection in the first round of the 2022 NBA Draft and instead cleared cap space for a possible future move.

To get him, the Knicks would have to give up a significant amount. Preparing to do so hasn’t been kind to the organization in the past, but could something finally happen this summer? ESPN cap guru Bobby Marks reported that the moves will leave the Knicks with $104 million in guaranteed contracts, and the cap is expected to reside at $122 million. But if that’s what the front office is hoping for and it doesn’t happen, that’ll be a bad look. Instead, New York made a flurry of trades and kept the No. 42 pick to select Duke’s Trevor Keels. Brunson being on the Knicks’ roster seemed like a pipe dream a few months ago, and it very well could still be one.

The New York Knicks made the first trade of the 2022 NBA draft on Thursday night, but they were actively working to make moves before the event even began.

3 reasons why Knicks' 2022 NBA Draft debacle was a travesty only ... (ClutchPoints)

Was there a scenario more apropos for the New York Knicks than what went down during the 2022 NBA Draft? Probably not.

No disrespect to Jalen Brunson, but he’s no franchise-altering talent that can completely turn the fortunes of the Knicks franchise around. The closest the Knicks got was Spike Lee being able to get a final word in with him before the director had to face the music like the rest of the fanbase. At the very least, it would be justifiable of a pursuit even if it ends in heartbreak. But alas, the lack of headline-grabbing deals left the spotlight on New York for NBA Twitter and Knicks fans alike to collectively go, “huh?” The Knicks didn’t nab Jaden Ivey. But they weren’t sitting there like a normal franchise going with who’s left on their draft board. But the Knicks were six games out of the Play-In Tournament in a suddenly-loaded Eastern Conference. They’re not exactly in a position to contend anytime soon.

Keels needs to work on his consistency and has plenty to prove, but showed at the end of his time at Duke why he could be extremely valuable if he pans out for the Knicks. Fans have no right to expect this to succeed for the Knicks when free agency begins on June 30. Brunson has been the Knicks prize for some time and now they have to get him at all costs. Plus, there were some reports that the Pistons were officially not listening to deals for Ivey by the time Spurs selected their pick at 9. Would either of those picks have been underwhelming compared to Ivey? Yes, but what the Knicks did instead made sticking at 11 look like taking Patrick Ewing all over again. Before we fully dive in, let’s summarize what the Knicks traded and got back in return.
