The Spurs can identify talent anywhere in the draft, and now that they're picking near the top of it, the opportunity to do so is strong than ever. Fortunately, the Spurs did manage to develop an All-Star in DeJounte Murray as a No. 29 overall pick. His ability to guard multiple positions, and his potential as a shooter, are among the reasons he's a tantalizing prospect and one of the most versatile players available in this draft. The Spurs selected Tim Duncan in the 1997 lottery… An athletic 6-9, Sochan can defend virtually anyone and should be an immediate fit in the switch-heavy league that the NBA has grown into. They did it with Kawhi Leonard. They did it with Bruce Bowen. Now, they'll try to do it with Sochan, who is one of the best defenders in this class.

Baylor's Jeremy Sochan has been selected by the San Antonio Spurs, he was the No. 9 overall pick in the first round of the 2022 NBA Draft on Thursday night.

San Antonio qualified for a league record 22 straight postseasons beginning in 1998, winning five NBA championships over that span with stars such as Tim Duncan, David Robinson, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. San Antonio acquired the 20th selection from Chicago in August as part of a sign-and-trade deal that sent DeMar DeRozan to the Bulls. The 25th pick was part of the compensation the Spurs received from the Boston Celtics for Derrick White. San Antonio also had the 20th, 25th selections in the first round and the in the second round It is the first time the Spurs have three first-round picks in the same draft in the franchise’s 50-year history in San Antonio.

For more than two decades, the San Antonio Spurs were a postseason fixture, winning titles and generally competing at the highest levels.

Malaki Branham (No. 20 Overall), B+: Branham has some drawbacks, but this is an excellent value for a player who was once viewed as a potential lottery pick. Sochan is also comfortable with the ball in his hands on offense, and San Antonio has a penchant for getting the most from players with shooting limitations. San Antonio continues to extract value from a relatively limited roster, but the team’s current corps could use the infusion of talent that an intriguing draft class can provide.

In a league that opts to switch more often than not he should be able to give San Antonio a spark on the defensive side of the ball. Sochan has a great opportunity to earn an established role in the Spurs’ rotation. Wesley may be raw but his long wingspan makes him a great candidate to be an impact player on the defensive end. The new playoff rules allowed them a chance to compete in a play-in game to earn a spot in the first round. The Spurs could use a two-way shooting forward or a stretch four just to give their offense more options. San Antonio finished fourth in the Southwest Division with a 34-48 record.
