Defensive Player of the Year. Along with a floater that’s league-ready, and the basketball IQ and frame that makes playmaking a whole lot easier against the best players in the world. I feel like I could definitely step on the floor and impact straight away.” “That was the biggest question about my game, whether I could shoot the ball well, get it up fast enough.” And they need more of a defensive presence,” The Post’s Marc Berman wrote May 19. In the short term, earning my spot on the roster, earning my spot in the rotation.” “I’ve had some really good workouts,” he says. It helps, because teams want versatility, they want players who can play multiple positions.” “MVP of the league is the best Dyson Daniels. Rookie of the Year to start. Daniels is the first to admit his jump-shot is a “work in progress”; he hit just 25 percent of his triples in the G-League where he battled adults rather than college athletes. “My best NBA-ready skill is my defence and being able to step on the floor, guard the best player and use my length, my size and my lateral quickness to cause trouble for players,” Daniels told reporters earlier in the week. And made again.

By way of Australia and the G League Ignite, Daniels is bringing his mature game to the next level.

"I can play fast as well," he said. It helped, Daniels said, that coach Jason Hart put the ball in his hands early on and empowered him to be a 6-foot-7 point guard. "So it's just about adjusting, knowing when I can go get mine, knowing when to distribute. But I think a lot of teams look for a guy that can run a team, distribute the ball." "I think I've always had it," Daniels said. But the native of Bendigo, Australia, seems uncommonly poised to make a smooth transition to the next level, poised to make Delly even more proud than he already is, poised to become a walking advertisement for the Ignite and the NBA Global Academy in Canberra.

2022 NBA Draft: New Orleans Pelicans select Dyson Daniels (The Bird Writes)

Pelicans land a superb defender and gifted playmaker in one fell swoop.

And if that jumper ever comes along – and given his touch and some of the relatively easier mechanical tweaks that will hopefully help his jumper with prep, it’s a reasonable bet that it will – the ceiling is being one of the best role players in the NBA. He processes the game quickly and plays unselfishly. He handles the ball well and passes at a high level.

2022 NBA Draft news: Pelicans select Dyson Daniels with No. 8 pick (ClutchPoints)

G League Ignite standout Dyson Daniels is heading to the New Orleans Pelicans. They chose him with the No. 8 pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.

Although Daniels should be able to impact the game in many ways at the next level, he has to improve as a scorer to become a star. Still, the versatile guard can emerge as a vital player for a Pelicans offense led by Brandon Ingram, as he has what it takes to provide a key scoring spark for head coach Willie Green in the upcoming season. They will follow the footsteps of Jalen Green, Jonathan Kuminga, and Isaiah Todd, each of whom was drafted last year after spending a season with Ignite. Although he is not a super explosive athlete, he shows tremendous dexterity and strength when putting up shots in the paint. He knows how to get defenders to let their guard down and blow by them to the rim. He played at the NBA Global Academy and orchestrated multiple impressive games on the FIBA circuit.

And now New Orleans gets to add a top prospect to a roster that's already loaded with young talent. And this Pelicans team is very close to being a legitimate contender -- though a lot of that falls on Zion Williamson. Daniels fits really nicely into that core as arguably the best perimeter defender in this draft. Last offseason, they actually traded it to the Memphis Grizzlies... but with a caveat that nobody expected to apply. His jumper, at this point, is the biggest area of concern, but if the Pelicans can get that falling, he has a high ceiling. Daniels is the latest in an increasingly long line of tall, versatile ball-handlers to come out of Australia. Though not quite as promising as prospects like Ben Simmons and Josh Giddey were, Daniels shares both their gift for playmaking and their limitations as shooters. Daniels isn't quite the prospect previous Ignite stars have been but is still a fascinating guard with size who can play with or without the ball.
