Memphis is using the No. 23 pick on Colorado State's David Roddy.
In 73 regular season games this past season (22.7 MPG), he averaged 10.8 PPG, 4.5 RPG, 2.7 APG and 1.4 SPG on .404/.374/.750 shooting. Melton will earn $8.25MM next season and his $8MM salary in 2023/24 is partially guaranteed at $1.5MM. He’s extension-eligible this offseason, although the Sixers might hold off on that decision. Trading a guard in Melton and drafting a couple of forwards in Jake LaRavia and Roddy seems to indicate that Memphis wants to re-sign free agent Tyus Jones, who is one of the top point guards on the market. According to Wojnarowski ( via Twitter), Colorado State’s David Roddy will be Memphis’ pick at No. 23. Roddy had an excellent junior season for the Rams, averaging 19.2 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 2.9 APG, 1.2 SPG and 1.1 BPG on .571/.438/.691 shooting in 31 games (32.9 MPG).
CAMDEN, N.J. — The 76ers traded the No. 23 pick in Thursday night's NBA Draft to the Grizzlies for guard De'Anthony Melton, according to ESPN.
Brooklyn opted for Philadelphia first-round selection next year, figuring the Sixers' regular-season record won't be as good and result in a higher choice. The Sixers also apparently sent the non-guaranteed $10 million contract of Danny Green to Memphis in the deal. He's under contract for $8.25 million next year and $8 million in 2023-24.
The Sixers are trading the No. 23 pick from Thursday night's NBA draft -- David Roddy -- as well as Danny Green to the Griz for De'Anthony Melton, ...
Melton averaged a career-high 10.8 points in 73 games for the Grizzlies this past season as they advanced to the Western Conference semifinals. The Sixers were scheduled to have only the 23rd pick in the draft. ESPN's Jonathan Givony and The Associated Press contributed to this report. Melton was a second-round draft pick of the Phoenix Suns in 2018, but after just one season in Arizona, the Suns shipped him to the Grizzlies as part of a multiplayer deal. Green tore both the ACL and LCL in his left knee during the playoffs. He is scheduled to make $8.25 million next season and $8 million in 2023-24.

- Grizzlies' De'Anthony Melton: Starting in finale Assuming the Sixers' roster remains relatively intact, Melton will primarily compete for minutes at both guard spots with Tyrese Maxey, Shake Milton, Furkan Korkmaz and Matisse Thybulle. While the Sixers' primary motivation appears to be getting off of Green's contract, they'll bring back a productive guard in Melton, who's set to make roughly $8 million in each of the next two seasons.

"Year 13, as you get older, it gets tough to deal with ... it's not the most fun thing to think about when you're starting your summer," he said in his exit interview. Melton will be entering his fifth year in the NBA next season after being drafted with a second-round pick in 2018. A 14-year veteran out of North Carolina, Green spent the last two seasons in Philadelphia. The 35-year-old suffered a torn ACL and LCL in the Sixers' season-ending Game 6 loss to the Miami Heat in the Eastern Conference Semifinals. It was the first major knee injury of his professional career, and he admitted that he was nervous about the recovery.
The Philadelphia 76ers are sending Danny Green and the No. 23 pick to the Memphis Grizzlies for De'Anthony Melton.
Green suffered an ACL tear in the Game 6 elimination loss to the Miami Heat and he is expected to miss a majority of the 2022-23 season. He fills some needs for Philadelphia as a ball-handler, a shooter and someone who provides toughness. Melton was a big piece off the bench for Memphis, helping it make the playoffs.
The Sixers on Thursday night acquired Grizzlies guard De'Anthony Melton, a source confirmed to NBC Sports Philadelphia. By Noah Levick.
The three-time champion had a streaky playoffs as a shooter, though he caught fire in Games 3 and 4 of the Sixers' second-round series against the Heat, making 10 of 13 threes overall in those home victories. Melton grabbed 15.1 percent of available defensive boards off missed field goals last year, the best rate of any combo guard. Though he's never played more than 22.7 minutes per game, Melton's strengths overlap nicely with several of the Sixers' weaknesses last season, at least on paper. Melton was part of Memphis' very deep rotation last season and averaged 10.8 points, 4.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists. Green experienced unfortunate injuries in each of the last two postseasons and is currently rehabbing from tearing the ACL and LCL in his left knee during the Sixers' Game 6 loss to Miami. The USC product has proven himself to be elite at forcing turnovers.

Though he's never played more than 22.7 minutes per game, Melton's strengths overlap nicely with several of the Sixers' weaknesses last season, at least on paper. Though a bit diminished physically, he was valuable for the Sixers on both the court and sidelines, serving as a quasi-assistant coach glad to give advice. For the price of pick 23 and Danny Green's contract, the Philadelphia 76ers secured the services of a disruptive, two-way guard in De'Anthony Melton.
But after having more than a few very realistic scenarios that could have gone really, really, really wrong, the decision to bet on a player like Melton, who still has two years left on a four-year, $34.6 million contract is a pretty good outcome, especially since it didn’t cost Matisse Thybulle to get the deal done. Like Thybulle, Melton is an elite passing lane disruptor who is constantly on the lookout for steals and opportunities to give ball handlers a tough time. Could the Philadelphia 76ers still move on from players like Matisse Thybulle, Furkan Korkmaz, and maybe even Tobias Harris in the pursuit of a roster more perfectly tailored to their Big 3 of Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and James Harden? Yes as well, but for now, De’Anthony Melton is a member of the Sixers, and his presence on the team is going to make the players around him that much better. Since making his way to Memphis, where his career really took off after his rookie season with the Phoenix Suns, Melton has averaged 9.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.7 assists, and .5 blocks as a player who has averaged just 20.9 minutes per game. DeAnthony Melton is a classic example of a 3-and-D backcourt performer. In Memphis, Melton was used as a top-of-the-key defender, as a positional defender who would lock in versus an opposing team’s top guard, and even as an off-ball defender, where his long arms and fantastic vision makes him a threat to disrupt passes, pull in offensive rebounds, and block the ball when it goes into the air.
CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) — The Philadelphia 76ers traded the rights to the 23rd overall pick of Thursday night's NBA draft and Danny Green to the Memphis Grizzlies ...
The Sixers and James Harden have big decisions ahead. They haven’t advanced past the second round since 2001 and only twice (1985 the other) since winning their last NBA championship in 1983. Aside of NBA scoring champion Joel Embiid and guard Tyrese Maxey, the 76ers appear open to trading other players on the roster following a second-round exit.
Melton is a career 36 percent shooter from long range, and he has averaged 1.3 steals per performance. Plus, he's just 24 years old and still has two years ...
Roddy is a well-rounded player that can do a bit of everything, though he does need to improve as a shooter from beyond the arc. The Grizzlies are clearly banking on Roddy's potential, and he certainly has a lot of it. On paper, he seems to be the exact type of role player the Sixers should be looking to surround their stars with. Wing play and depth have been two issues for the Sixers in recent seasons, and Melton should help address both of those areas. This seems to be the type of deal that both teams should feel pretty good about. The move makes sense for the Sixers, as they land a young, two-way player in Milton, who projects to fit well alongside Joel Embiid and James Harden in Philadelphia. Melton is a career 36 percent shooter from long range, and he has averaged 1.3 steals per performance.

To gain access to the non-taxpayer MLE and round out their roster with a minimum deal, the Sixers would have to shed roughly $8.2 million in salary without taking any money back. Teams cannot use the non-taxpayer mid-level exception (projected to be $10.3 million next season), the bi-annual exception ($4.1 million) or acquire a player in a sign-and-trade if any of those moves would take them over the apron. (Charlotte Hornets forward Gordon Hayward, perhaps?) But as of now, it appears far more likely that they'll be limited to the taxpayer MLE once free agency opens at 6 p.m. on June 30. The Sixers' draft-night acquisition of Melton perhaps made that less likely. If Harden does pick up his option, the Sixers will have roughly $151.7 million in salary committed to 13 players. Although Melton is listed at only 6'2" (without shoes), he measured in with a 6'8½" wingspan at the 2018 NBA combine. Flipping his contract and a late first-round pick for a proven veteran—aka, someone whom head coach Doc Rivers might be inclined not to bury on his bench—should help the Sixers maximize their win-now window with Joel Embiid and James Harden. Melton is also an agent of chaos on defense, much like Sixers wing Matisse Thybulle. He led all Grizzlies players with 206 deflections last year, and he has posted elite steal and block rates relative to all guards over each of his four NBA seasons. Recent reports have suggested Harden plans to opt in and then sign a short-term extension, although the terms of said deal remain unclear for now. The Sixers' free-agency plans are not just Tucker-or-bust, though. They walked out with a young, playoff-tested rotation player who can contribute to both their win-now and win-later windows. Melton should be an instant-impact addition for the Sixers on both ends of the floor.
The Philadelphia 76ers made a draft-night trade many expected on Thursday when they sent the No. 23 pick and Danny Green to the Memphis Grizzlies to acquire ...
He tore his ACL in the Sixers’ season-ending loss to the Miami Heat and is expected to miss most if not all of next season. He is expected to fill the same role in Philadelphia. Melton can knock down a 3-ball on one end and bother the hell out of his opponents on the other.
De'Anthony Melton improves the Sixers defense, shooting, and toughness. But there could be more trades ahead, as NBA offseason ramps up.
At the very least, though, the Sixers moved themselves closer to a world in which they have a legitimate rotation. Such a move would leave the Sixers with Harden, Maxey, Gordon, Harris, and Embiid in the starting lineup and Melton coming off the bench. Let’s assume that the Sixers didn’t acquire Melton with the thought that he can start on the wing. At the very least, though, the acquisition of Melton creates a new variable that expands the Sixers’ possibilities. Given the team’s needs, and the fact that Thybulle’s lack of a jumpshot precluded the team from counting on him to fill one, there did not appear to be many avenues where the Sixers could accomplish their goals and hang on to their second-team All-Defensive wing. The acquisition of three-and-D grinder De’Anthony Melton from Memphis for the No. 23 pick and Danny Green was such a no-brainer that you didn’t see it coming.
Here are some facts and knowledge on new Philadelphia 76ers guard De'Anthony Melton after the draft-night trade.
Melton signed a 4-year $35 million contract with the Grizzlies in the 2020 offseason so he has two years left on his deal. Melton is a physical perimeter defender who bothers the hell out of opponents which makes him a legitimate two-way player in this league. He was the 46th overall pick before he was traded to the Phoenix Suns in August of that offseason.

But we think mapping it out the best we can with quite a few options — maybe eight to 12 that we think could contribute and might be in the range of what we’re allowed to do — we feel pretty good that we might get someone that’ll contribute and be in our playoff rotation.” But I think the bar will be high on a minimum spend at the backup center spot because we feel like we’ve got some guys who can contribute.” So we’re looking for more 'win now.' If we can get someone maybe earlier in their career but already contributing (who) could be here for a long time, that would be great, too.” “I like having a mix of vets and young guys who are pushing the vets,” Morey said. Petrušev will play for the Sixers in summer league after a season with Anadolu Efes in Turkey, according to Morey, but it's clearly not at all certain he’ll have a future in Philadelphia. I think someone like that is someone who can really contribute and be a two-way player.
