The planet's dumbest animated duo make a semi-triumphant return in "Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe," which -- unlike when they "did" America 26 years ...

Sure, it's another throwback intended to wring value out of nostalgia, but one executed with a level of relentless silliness that, like its "stars," won't ever be accused of over-thinking things. As always, if Butt-Head is a moron, Beavis somehow resides a rung or two below him on the evolutionary ladder, at one point prompting the former to derisively observe, "You really brought your 'A' game today." "Intellectual property" is a misnomer, but the movie kicks off a mini-resurgence for the title

If you’ve been thinking about trying Paramount+, and you’re a big Beavis and Butt-Head fan, this is probably the right time to do it. But the film is streaming on Paramount+, where a subscription will run you ten bucks a month — and if you’ve never signed up before, you can get the first month free. Admittedly, those sorts of interstitials don’t really work within the confines of a plot-driven feature film, but between YouTube and TikTok, there are so many things out there Beavis and Butt-Head could mock. Still, even if Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe doesn’t quite achieve its full potential, and the overall package feels a little archaic in 2022, it does land a bunch of big laughs. (They quickly realized they have overestimated B&B’s intelligence and initiative, and relocate the portal to a much closer location.) There, they resume their quest to “score” with one of the former astronauts from their crew (voiced by Andrea Savage). Meanwhile, the government tries to hunt down what they believe are alien life forms that have emerged from this black hole.

Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe Review (VitalThrills.com)

Whether you think Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe is worth your time, at least Mike Judge stays true to the characters he created.

The pleasures of Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe are purely nostalgic. Beavis and Butt-Head the television show has always commented on changing societal norms and the movie is no different, but at least it does point out that the characters that seem to have all these cultural forces rally around them are idiots and not symbols. I imagine Judge may have found pressure in making Beavis and Butt-Head more modern in scope, but that would go against what the show was about in the first place. And so that brings us to Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe, where our two heroes enter space, time travel, alternate universes, all in search of finally scoring. Whether they’re laughing at two seagulls having sex on a beach, or playing “frog baseball,” or sitting around watching television and eating nachos, Beavis and Butt-Head have come to represent the simple joys and foibles of being a horny kid in an overstimulating world. Since Beavis and Butt-Head premiered on MTV back in the 1990s, we’ve gotten all kinds of irreverent animated shows over all kinds of networks.

Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe movie review (2022) | Roger ... (Roger Ebert)

If you're arriving at Do the Universe with the basic need for entertainment and to spend 86-minutes worth of comfort viewing with these classic characters ...

They spend hours pushing the tube into the metallic orifice, to the point of the astronauts mistaking them for savants and taking them in space as a PR grab (two at-risk youths saved by NASA!). They agree to go only because an astronaut, Serena Ryan (voiced by Andrea Savage) asks them if they want to “do” it (it being docking with Mir). That misreading causes the pair to wreck the shuttle and be kicked out into space by Serena where they come upon a black hole that sends them into the future, into 2022. In the early going, we get Judge’s familiar, but endearing potty humor: Beavis and Butt-Head arrive at the Johnson Space Center, and the latter immediately quips, “Heh, heh. Instead of sentencing them to prison, however, the lenient judge (voiced by Chi McBride) sends them to eight weeks of NASA space camp in the hopes of saving these delinquents by unlocking their hidden “potential.” In a bid for the award, Butt-Head uses the Power Kick 3000 to kick Beavis in the crotch as an experiment of his fortitude. But never has the kindred spirits shared by these duos been more felt than in creator-director Mike Judge’s time-travel movie “Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe.”

'Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe' Review: Chortles in Space (The New York Times)

Even though you can guess what these two characters will say as they're sucked into a black hole, their cosmic adventure still delivers new laughs.

Maybe that’s why this film, a zippy academia-tweaking scene notwithstanding, is less expansive in its sociological purview than the 1996 movie “Beavis and Butt-Head Do America.” The spectacle of Beavis and Butt-Head coming to grips with today’s technology is funnier than bits in other movies where seniors try to do same. The mission fails spectacularly, and Beavis and Butt-Head are sucked into a black hole (you can imagine their reaction to this prospect), then dropped into Texas circa 2022.

The film doesn't try to change them for the times, but shows that what worked in the '90s (mostly) still works today. Throughout, Beavis and Butt-Head are true to themselves, making fun of everything around them because they're too stupid to know any better but always getting the last laugh. That sucks!

Review: 'Beavis and Butt-Head' are back on Paramount+ (Los Angeles Times)

"Civil: Ben Crump" debuts on Netflix, “Downton Abbey: A New Era” hits Peacock and more movies to watch at home.

Available in select theaters and on VOD “Downton Abbey: A New Era” offers a few new adventures for the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants as they deal with an unexpected inheritance and the arrival of a troubled film production at their lavish estate in 1928. Like the TV series, this second “Downton Abbey” movie packs in a lot of plot and characters before efficiently tying everything together with a succession of genuinely moving farewells. But between its lovely Hawaii setting, its well-chosen indie-pop soundtrack and its earnest belief in the life-changing power of a great song, “Press Play” is pretty pleasant. But the filmmakers get more tension and even emotion out of this premise than most movies of this type do, mainly by treating the characters as multidimensional people who deserve a shot at redemption, and not like voodoo dolls ripe for the poking. It presents some thoughtful perspectives, both from the dedicated litigator and a community conditioned to expect disappointment from the criminal justice system — and a last chance at fairness in the civil courts. A party game tests the bonds between old friends in “Gatlopp,” a horror-comedy with sly supernatural elements. Nadia Hallgren’s documentary “Civil: Ben Crump” is a biographical sketch of a prominent personal injury attorney who has made his reputation representing the families of Black victims of police and vigilante violence. James Jones’ documentary “Chernobyl: The Lost Tapes” — also available on HBO — is an excellent complement, both reinforcing the series’ observations and offering insights into how the citizenry dealt with a looming catastrophe that no one in charge would honestly acknowledge. Instead, these scenes of clean-up crews jovially headed to their doom and residents of neighboring cities pushing baby strollers in the radiation-saturated outdoors prove haunting — a vivid portrait of the human cost for malfeasance and authoritarianism. In the decades since, Mike Judge — the inventor and the voice of the perpetually chuckling animated duo — has gained renown as one of our sharpest social satirists, thanks to movies like “Office Space” and “Idiocracy” and the TV series “Silicon Valley.” Yet what’s so wonderful about the sequel “Beavis and Butt-Head Do the Universe” is that Judge does nothing to make his most famous creation any more sophisticated — visually or comedically. Judge squeezes in a little social commentary on how American society — past and present — contorts itself to accommodate a couple of white dudes, even when they’re total morons.
