Colorado's incumbent netminder allowed five goals on 22 shots before getting the hook and being replaced by Pavel Francouz. But in Game 4, he was sharp, allowing just two goals on 40 Tampa Bay shots. The Avalanche weren't at complete health in Game 4, however, as they skated without Andre Burakovsky up front. "If he can do all the functions that it takes to play a hockey game and is feeling comfortable with it, he's a guy we'll put back in.

Part of what has made the Avalanche’s run so impressive is the significant injuries they have been able to play through. Prior to his injury he scored six goals, eight assists, and 14 total points in the playoffs. He has been inching his way back over the past couple of days and has made enough progress that he is able to return.

HE'S IN: Nazem Kadri To Play In Game 4 Tonight (Colorado Hockey Now)

Nazem Kadri will play Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final tonight for the Colorado Avalanche against Tampa Bay Lightning.

Tampa Bay players are likely to target that thumb as is. But getting your hands whacked is something that happens a lot to faceoff guys. That thumb may not be 100 percent, but as Bednar noted this morning, not many guys are 100 percent these days.

When the Avalanche Needed a Hero, They Got One in Nazem Kadri (The Hockey News)

Nazem Kadri has a quiet return before scoring the biggest goal of his career, and now the Colorado Avalanche are a win away from taking the Stanley Cup.

The Avalanche will have a chance to win it all on home ice on Friday in what will be an incredible Ball Arena crowd. The whole overtime screamed of having a wonky game-winning goal, so of course it had to be one nobody saw go in in the first place. The Lightning had a shot advantage throughout the game, before an Avalanche of opportunities for Colorado shifted the momentum their way in the do-or-die stanza. He had a few looks throughout the game, but nothing too substantial until the OT-winner. He skated the past two days with the club, but seemed to struggle to get quality shots off -- sure, it was practice, but he looked in visible pain. But what he did -- or didn't do -- in the first 60 minutes didn't matter.

Point suffered a lower-body injury in Game 7 of the first round and didn’t play again until Games 1 and 2 of the finals. Lightning Coach Jon Cooper said he is not ruling out Point for the rest of the finals. But Kuemper (35 saves) kept the home team in check for the final 40 minutes after Victor Hedman gave Tampa Bay a 2-1 lead midway through the second period. (Play does not automatically stop when a goalie loses his mask if there is a scoring chance in motion, the NHL rule book states.) But as reality set in, the Avalanche had a 3-2 win that put it firmly in control of the best-of-seven series with a 3-1 lead. Tampa Bay, which was 7-1 in these playoffs when leading after two periods, took a 2-1 lead into the final period.

Avalanche's Nazem Kadri finishes highly anticipated return with ... (Tampa Bay Times)

He hadn't played since Game 3 of the Western Conference final, when Evander Kane's hit left him with a thumb injury.

Kadri set up a scoring chance for the Avalanche early in overtime, feeding Nichushkin from behind the net, and then turned his line’s final shift into the winning goal. It had taken Kadri four games to return from a thumb injury and get to that spot — just past the 12-minute mark of overtime Wednesday in Game 4. Between periods, he called the Amalie Arena ice “garbage” on the ESPN broadcast, but said he otherwise felt good.
