Jerami Grant trade: Pistons send forward to Trail Blazers for future ... (CBSSports.com)

The Pistons will get a 2025 first via the Milwaukee Bucks.

There were likely few teams willing to pay Grant and give him the role he desired, which could have resulted in the low trade value. Grant is entering the final year of his contract and was not a long-term piece for the rebuilding Pistons who will now forge ahead with Cade Cunningham and $43 million in cap space for free agency. The Pistons now have No. 36 overall, while the Blazers have No. 46 overall.

The Detroit Pistons traded forward Jerami Grant to the Portland Trail Blazers ahead of the 2022 NBA Draft.

Offloading Grant frees up a ton of cap space for the Pistons to become players in free agency, but it still feels like they didn’t recoup the best-possible value for Grant. While Grant isn’t a No. 1 option, the Pistons surely could have gotten more than a first-rounder three years down the line, and some movement on second-round picks. The Blazers got the prized wing asset they’ve coveted since the trade deadline, and they didn’t even need to give up their first-round pick in the draft to get him. While the Pistons remain a few years away from contention, they didn’t add a draft pick of much value. A 3-and-D specialist, Grant represents exactly what the Blazers have been lacking on the wing over the past few years. Last year in Detroit, Grant averaged 19.2 points per game, knocking down 1.9 3’s per night at a 35.8% clip.

Detroit Pistons trade Jerami Grant to Portland for 2025 first-round pick (Detroit Free Press)

The Detroit Pistons have traded forward Jerami Grant to the Portland Trail Blazers for the 2025 first-round pick via Milwaukee.

The Trail Blazers won just 27 games last season and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2013, but should be in contention next season with a healthy Lillard, who played a career-low 29 games last season due to an abdominal injury and surgery. In Portland, Grant will have an opportunity to compete for the playoffs alongside Damian Lillard, a teammate from the U.S. Olympic basketball team last summer. Grant signed a three-year, $60 million contract with the Pistons in 2020. Additionally, the Blazers are sending the Pistons their own 2025 second-round pick, and the more favorable of their own second-round pick and the New Orleans Pelicans' second-round pick in 2026. The Pistons have interest in Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton, who will enter restricted free agency, and are also rumored to be interested in Charlotte Hornets forward Miles Bridges (Michigan State) and Cleveland Cavaliers guard Collin Sexton. The Pistons and Blazers are also swapping this year's second-round picks, with Detroit getting No. 36 overall and Portland getting No. 46.

The Drummond trade and the arrival of Weaver were signs that ownership was willing to execute a complete teardown. James L. Edwards III of The Athletic reported in January 2021 that Grant left the Nuggets in part because he'd be allowed to have a bigger role on the floor. That's to be expected considering he had a 27.2 percent usage rate with the Pistons compared to 18.4 percent for his career, per Basketball Reference. Given his age, Grant could have fit into whatever Weaver has planned for the present and future. Detroit did get a boost by selecting Cade Cunningham with the No. 1 pick last summer. The Pistons turned heads when they signed Grant to a three-year, $60 million contract. Cunningham is a foundational cornerstone, but the franchise's fortunes didn't shift overnight. Moving him now, when his trade value is likely at its apex, better aligns with Weaver's long-term blueprint. In general, Detroit had a dreadful 2020 offseason. He put up 19.2 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. His production didn't slip much this past year. Jerami Grant Trade Shows Trail Blazers' Strategy (Blazer's Edge)

Closing the circle, Portland ultimately exchanged McCollum and Nance, Jr. for Grant and swingman Josh Hart, also a product of that trade. Here's the instant ...

This also makes it slightly more palatable for the Blazers to consider trading up for a prime rookie, if they think they can get their hands on one. It keeps the field alive for a significant second play. Assuming the Blazers are willing to pay Grant and he lasts more than a year, they just acquired a defensive-minded, scoring-ready, veteran forward without burning their best trade asset in the off-season. The only hot name impacted negatively by the Grant deal would be John Collins. Since both play power forward naturally, that wouldn’t be a comfortable fit, at least on the surface. Fortunately, the Blazers still have assets to play with, notably that lottery pick. He’s a good first step, one that will likely appeal to fans and Damian Lillard alike. Portland will be his fifth team in nine years of service, only the second (after Detroit) to pay him big. If he’s mediocre from the arc, negotiating shots and floor space may become a work in progress, as he may require more volume than the Blazers can give him. If one presumes the 7th pick, Simons, Hart, and Nurkic are all available for the right price, it’s actually their 5th-best asset at worst. But if the guards gel on the defensive end—or if Hart ends up playing at shooting guard with Little (or another defensive forward yet to come) at the three-spot—Portland will field a mobile, active defensive unit around Lillard for the first time since 2014. The Portland Trail Blazers have traded for Detroit Pistons forward Jerami Grant, likely the first of several summer moves to improve their roster. Grant is not at an All-NBA defensive level, but he’s closer than anyone the Blazers have acquired in recent memory.

Jerami Grant is off to Portland, but the return is unexpected (PistonPowered)

Jerami Grant was traded by the Detroit Pistons to the Portland Trail Blazers. They received the 2025 first round pick of the Milwaukee Bucks. Surprised?

For those hoping Grant would get them a high draft pick this season, the return is disappointing. The Pistons had to make a decision this summer if Grant, 28, was going to be part of their future or not. Grant was entering the last year of a three-year $60 million contract in one of general manager Troy Weaver’s first moves.

The Pistons will get a 2025 first via the Milwaukee Bucks.

To that end, it's worth noting that the team is dangling the No. 7 pick to try and add a veteran. A first-round pick three years down the road means much more to a rebuilding Pistons team than it does to a Blazers team trying to win now. At first glance, this seems like a low return for Grant, and it's fair to wonder if the Pistons could have gotten more in return from a desperate contender if they had moved him at last season's trade deadline. The first step was to go out and acquire Grant, who Lillard has been advocating for, per Wojnarowski. Grant should be a perfect fit as a versatile forward who will immediately improve their porous defense and can take some of the offensive responsibility off of Lillard's shoulders. The Pistons got a bunch of extra draft picks for someone who was never going to be part of their plans long-term. Grant is entering the final year of his contract and was not a long-term piece for the rebuilding Pistons who will now forge ahead with Cade Cunningham and $43 million in cap space for free agency.

Grading Jerami Grant trade to Trail Blazers: Instant reaction (The Athletic)

Portland still has plenty of work to do to pull this roster back toward being what we're used to seeing.

The Blazers will need to make a lot more moves this offseason to ensure they get back to the postseason in an improving Western Conference. This is a solid start. This gives them some roster and cap flexibility, but we can’t truly know how much they benefit from this trade for probably a few years at the earliest. The Pistons have been linked to pursuing Deandre Ayton from the Phoenix Suns in his restricted free agency, but it was assumed Grant might be used in a sign-and-trade possibility there. Getting a first-round pick was a must for the Pistons. You’d like it to be a little bit more imminent than 2025, but they did get to move up in the second round, and they got some future second-round pick compensation. They’ve put together a nice young core with Cunningham, Bey, Isaiah Stewart and whomever they grab in this draft with the fifth and 36th picks. Throw in his defensive capabilities, and he can help the Blazers in a lot of areas they were lacking over the last few years. The Blazers have been using the seventh pick in this draft as bait to try to acquire some veterans who can help this team win right away. The Blazers need more help than Grant, and they’ll need to make sure he’s a long-term solution. He’s grown a lot in his time in the NBA, and he really took off after getting to Denver. In Detroit, he was asked to be a lead scorer, and he put up 20.9 points per game on 55.6 percent true shooting. The Portland Trail Blazers have been trying to dangle draft picks to trade for veterans who can help Damian Lillard right away. Let’s bust out the red ink and throw some grades on it for both sides. They were already projected to be amongst the league leaders.

With a focus on revamping the roster, Rip City brings Damian Lillard a nice complimentary piece in Jerami Grant in a win-now move for the playoffs.

With the acquisition of Grant, the Trailblazers now give Lillard a pick-and-roll partner plus an inside presence that the team has been lacking for some time. Grant is set to make $20.95 million this coming season in the final year of his three-year, $60 million contract that he signed with Detroit in 2020 free agency. The pick, initially owned by Milwaukee that Portland traded away is top-four protected, according to Adrian Wojnarowski.

Detroit Pistons have agreed to trade Olympic gold medalist Jerami Grant to the Portland Trail Blazers.

A source with direct knowledge of the agreement said the Houston Rockets are trading center Christian Wood, their leading scorer and rebounder this season, to the Dallas Mavericks in exchange for four players and a draft pick. The Hawks must improve on defense after a first-round loss to Miami in the playoffs. It was a big step back for the team which advanced to the Eastern Conference finals in 2021. Gonzaga's Chet Holmgren, Auburn's Jabari Smith and Duke's Paolo Banchero are set to make it a forward-heavy start to the NBA draft. Other names to watch include Baylor's Jeremy Sochan, Ohio State's E.J. Liddell and Wake Forest's Jake LaRavia. There's also a preps-to-pros prospect in Dominick Barlow from the Overtime Elite developmental program. And the trade serves as a homecoming of sorts. The people spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because neither Atkinson nor the Hornets revealed any details of the talks or agreement publicly. The Pistons now have somewhere around $44 million in space available this summer, with free agency set to start in about a week. The 2021-22 NBA season is over. The 2022-23 NBA season seems like it’s already here. It also gives Portland a big boost after a disappointing season, one where perennial All-Star Damian Lillard missed much of the year while injured. In his first six seasons, he averaged 9.3 points while playing for Philadelphia, Oklahoma City and Denver.

Blazers go all in (Deadspin)

Jerami Grant is the first round of reinforcements for Damian Lillard.

One has to wonder if the Pistons could have brought in a better return had they traded Grant at last year’s deadline instead of waiting for the summer. It feels like half the league is trying to increase their draft capital and shed salary while the other half is engaged in an arms race toward next season’s playoffs. The Pistons also took themselves out of the competition to trade with Sacramento and get into the top four draft selection. As the first option in Detroit last season, Grant’s shooting splits were rough at 43/36/84. These are slightly below his career averages of 45/35/72. But Grant has never played next to a veteran-savvy point guard like Lillard, who is on the downside of his prime, but still demands a double-team at 24 PPG, though only through 24 games due to injury. The Pistons also receive No. 36 overall, while the Blazers take No. 46 in the swap. On Wednesday, another Woj Bomb announced the Detroit Pistons traded Jerami Grant to the Portland Trail Blazers for a 2025 first-round pick via Milwaukee and multiple pick swaps.
