New England Patriots legend Rob Gronkowski has retired for the second time, announcing he's leaving the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

And for this, I want to thank the whole entire first class Buccaneers organization for an amazing ride, trusting me to come back to play and help build a championship team. And let me tell ya, the journey in Tampa over the last 2 years has blown away what I originally wrote about in college, big time. Rob Gronkowski hasn’t caught a pass for the New England Patriots since his spectacular 2019 Super Bowl performance, a game where he and Tom Brady hooked up one final, impactful time on a lunging, diving play to set up a rare score in the snoozeworthy affair.

After Tom Brady retired and then unretired the next logical question was, is Gronk coming back? Many thought he would return to join his friend The GOAT for ...

After playing 9 seasons for the Patriots and 2 for the Buccaneers he was a restricted free agent going into this season with 621 receptions for 9,286 yards and 92 touchdowns. That choice ended up paying off when he was able to help lead the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to win a Super Bowl, and for him it was his fourth. Gronk retired briefly before the 2019 season and made the rounds on TV even on FOX’s The Masked Singer. When Tom Brady announced he was making the move from New England to Tampa Bay, Gronk soon followed coming out of retirement and returning for the 2020 season.

Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski is again calling it a career, making the announcement Tuesday via social media.

"He played a crucial part in our Super Bowl LV championship season in 2020 and battled through a number of injuries last year while on the way to one of the most productive receiving yardage seasons in his 11-year career. He was named to the NFL's 2010s All-Decade Team and its 100th Anniversary All-Time Team. Gronkowski's breakthrough year came in 2011, when he set the NFL record for most receiving touchdowns by a tight end with 17. Focused when he had to be, and FUN the rest of the time. "The friendships and relationships I have made will last forever, and I appreciate every single one of my teammates and coaches for giving everything they had as well. "I want to thank the whole entire first class Buccaneers organization for an amazing ride, trusting me to come back to play and help build a championship team," Gronkowski said in his statement.

Buccaneers are still in great shape despite Rob Gronkowski's ... (The Pewter Plank)

Arguably the greatest tight end of all time, Rob Gronkowski, has called it a career (again). Fortunately, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers are in great shape.

An instinct may be to comb the free agent market, but with the way they’ve already prepared, it may not be completely necessary. For what it’s worth, the notion of two rookie tight ends and an aging veteran might not seem ideal. Now the de facto starter, Brate is in a great (Brate?) position to thrive thanks to the growing rapport he’s developed with Brady. Nobody exemplifies the point of tight ends not needing to be first-round talents than Cameron Brate. The undrafted Brate looks to once again be the Bucs starting tight end. Of course, that isn’t as “glamorous” as Gronkowski being at the top of the depth chart, but there are far worse situations to be in at tight end. Naturally, some are starting to panic as to what will become of the Buccaneers’ tight end situation going forward.

When Gronkowski retired the first time, you hoped for the best -- that his body would heal, that he would recover, that he would be happy with his decision. In his retirement announcement, Gronkowski said that in college he was asked what his dream job would be and where it was located. It was hard to watch and even harder to accept that Gronkowski was finished. Perhaps best of all, it was a joy to watch Gronkowski all the way to the end. So much so that within minutes of his announcement, his own agent, Drew Rosenhaus, said he wouldn't be surprised if Gronkowski took a call from Brady and returned by midseason. The life of the party was leaving on a down note, and taking all the fun with him.

It isn’t difficult to imagine his shearing off the sleeves of the Hall’s signature gold jacket to flaunt his bulging muscles. All that discomfort prompted him to retire, the first time, after the 2018 season, before he turned 30. Redefining his position, he was named an All-Pro four times and was selected to five Pro Bowls. He won four Super Bowls. Three came with New England, where his body eventually betrayed him and hindered him from maximum gronking. He gronked plenty: 92 in the regular season, more than any other player since he debuted in 2010, according to Pro Football Reference, and 15 more in the postseason. His joie de vivre spawned countless memes, perhaps none more endearing than his “Yo soy fiesta!” exclamation — butchered Spanish that translates to “I am party!” — after a playoff game in 2012.

Buccaneers Rob Gronkowski news opens door for new Hall of Fame ... (The Pewter Plank)

The Buccaneers just got a bit of extra cap space to play with during the 2022 season without the need to re-sign tight end Rob Gronkowski.

The Bucs are one of the few teams in the league that can make the most of a wide receiver room with three or four quality starters. Gronk is obviously still one of the best tight ends in the NFL, but his injuries and price tag last season did put an extra level of pressure on the team. Good teams go after great players when they’re available.

Saints should pray Rob Gronkowski doesn't pull a Brady (Who Dat Dish)

Tampa Bay Buccaneers tight end Rob Gronkowski announced his retirement on Tuesday, which is good news for the New Orleans Saints.

In the last two years at Tampa, Gronk recorded two solid seasons of 623 and 802 receiving yards, thriving under the arm of Tom Brady. The quarterback-tight end duo have been a pain in NOLA’s side ever since the two arrive in Tampa, and it’s safe to say the Saints would rather not see both of them on the field in 2022. With Brady under contract with the Bucs for the 2022 seasons, many believed Gronk would yet again follow in his footsteps and play one more season with his favorite QB, but it seems the 33-year-old tight end is happy with calling it quits — for now. After 11 seasons in the league, Gronk officially hung up his cleats having spent the majority of his career on the New England Patriots. He retired in 2019 only to return to play with Tom Brady for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the last two seasons, winning a ring in 2020.

New England is where the tight end spent the bulk of his career and established himself as an all-time talent. He also was a key piece to multiple Super Bowl ...

As Brady held up the jersey, Gronkowski snatched it from his hands and the quarterback chased him into the outfield to the crowd's delight. As Julian Edelman delivered a pitch, Gronkowski laid down a bunt and dented the back side of the trophy. A few plays later, Gronkowski hauled in a 4-yard pass by Brady where he needed to leap over his defender to give the Patriots the opportunity to force overtime with a 2-point conversion. Following New England's win in Super Bowl LIII, the team was the guest of the Red Sox for Opening Day where it would show off its trophies and throw out the ceremonial first pitch. The most famous came when he physically taped the number on the back of a blank practice jersey and wore it onto the field. On the day, he caught eight of his 15 targets for 144 yards and a touchdown, but this game goes beyond his gaudy numbers. One of the best examples of that came in a November matchup against the Indianapolis Colts in 2014 in what is more popularly remembered as the " Jonas Gray Game." In what would later prove to be his last game as a Patriot, Gronkowski delivered one last gasp of greatness that helped New England to the 13-3 win over the Los Angeles Rams. With the score knotted at three in the fourth quarter, Tom Brady dropped back on a second-and-3 attempt from the L.A. 31-yard line. Gronkowski was matching shoestring catches, grabs in coverage, and single-handedly put New England on the goal line. During a goal-line rush in the fourth quarter, Gray ran up the left side where Gronkowski was slotted as the outside blocker. Gronkowski's massive frame and freakish athletic ability are what made him not only a future Hall of Famer, but one of the most enjoyable players of his era to watch. He also was a key piece to multiple Super Bowl teams, including the Super Bowl LIII club in 2018.
