Banchero projects as the most likely of the top trio to become a lead initiator early in his career, flashing terrific feel for the game with ball in hand, and an ability to attack the rim and create off the dribble. Banchero is too big for traditional wing defenders who will have a speed advantage on him, and he will be too quick for guys his own size. To be clear, Banchero is significantly bigger than both James and Butler, reportedly measuring in at over six-foot-10 without shoes, with a grown man’s body at 250lbs. Here's some of the players we think will underperform relative to expectations in the 2022 NBA Draft.

Dieng is hovering in the back half of the lottery. The Duke big man is going to go in the middle of the first round, and he does have some impressive rebounding and rim protection skills. Sharpe reportedly has all the tools, but it’s tough to see him living up to the hype of a top-five selection. Sharpe is going in the top five according to most draft projections, and it’s borderline crazy to think about. However, the guard is being discussed as potentially going in the top five. The Orlando Magic have the No. 1 pick and have a decision among a few top prospects.

He doesn't, however, crack the top 50 in adjusted rebounding, steals, blocks or TOV%. Our NCAA stats-based model ranks him No. 35, with a No. 18 ranking from AAU data and No. 33 by combine measurements. His age (22) is taken into account in the NCAA stats-based model, which is part of the reason that he falls all the way to No. 56. Keels holds the No. 25 spot in our model's rankings but is currently going No. 32 in the mock draft. Chandler is No. 25 in Givony's mock draft but is No. 11 in our projections. His shooting, one of his main appeals to scouts, isn't terrible, but he ranks No. 24 among our top 100 in true shooting percentage (TS%). In adjusted rebounding, assists, steals and blocks, however, he never cracks the top 40. In addition to the draft expert rankings, we have NCAA, AAU and combine information for Agbaji. He ranks No. 56, No. 62 and No. 29 by those respective models. Among our top 100, he is in the top 12 in: Smith's No. 3 ranking is a combination of solid NCAA performance and a high ranking from Givony, who has him going No. 1 in his most recent mock draft. Holmgren became the only 7-footer since we began our model to be in the top 15 in adjusted eFG% among our 100 prospects while also being in the top half of 3-point attempt rate. Smith ranks third overall in our model's projections and has a 48% chance to play at an All-Star level, with a small gap separating him and our top two prospects. All of this puts Holmgren at the top of our projections with a 51.3% chance to play at an All-Star level, edging out Banchero at 51.2%. Holmgren and Banchero both project to have a 51% chance at becoming an All-Star-caliber player -- higher than Anthony Edwards' odds prior to his selection in the 2020 NBA draft but just short of Cade Cunningham's in 2021.

For reasons I outlined earlier this offseason, Gonzaga’s Andrew Nembhard is one of the most underrated prospects in this draft class. After winning a national title, Kansas wing Ochai Agbaji is one of the only upperclassmen I have with a first-round grade in this mock draft. LSU’s Tari Eason had an early pre-draft workout with the Hawks, and for me, this is one of the most logical fits in the draft. Beauchamp would slot in well on the perimeter for the Rockets. With his length and ability on the ball, Dieng should also spark some intrigue by teams with a top-10 pick like the San Antonio Spurs. “I’m confident in my shot now, so I feel like playing here with a guy like Tyrese, who’s a very good passer as well, I can play off the ball, cut to spots and knock down the shot. I’m always going to bring positive energy to the organization and the people of that city. Detroit recently hosted Ivey for a solo workout, and it was one of two workouts Ivey had before the draft. However, it’s unlikely that two teams pass up on a chance to draft the 6-foot-10 floor spacer, who is widely seen as the top prospect in the class. But if the pick isn’t traded, I don’t think Ivey (who reportedly hasn’t even worked out for the organization) fits in the backcourt alongside De’Aaron Fox and Davion Mitchell. I just wanted to be the first one down the court. Now that the list of invitations for prospects to attend the draft in person has been finalized, players are wrapping up any last-minute pre-draft workouts.

Sandwiched between Holmgren and Banchero in our consensus ranking is likely No. 1 pick Jabari Smith Jr. at No. 2. There is no clear-cut No. 1 -- or No. 2 or 3 or 4, for that matter. He ranked as high as No. 1 and as low as No. 4 on some of our experts' boards, whereas Banchero -- No. 3 in the consensus ranks -- ranked No. 4 on only two boards. Taken together, Holmgren won out as the No. 1 in our consensus rankings -- though he was hardly a unanimous pick. Four of the seven had Chet Holmgren No. 1 while one had Jabari Smith Jr. and another had Paolo Banchero. I had Jaden Ivey. And opinions vary on who is deserving of this year's No. 1 selection.

He will need to demonstrate an ability to be trusted as a team defender as to get a real opportunity at the next level. Possessing a naturally low and wide stance, he, in a way, looks ready to sit and slide as a defender. Defensively, he has a lot of improvement that is needed. Next, he needs to play in an offensive system that is more prescriptive than organic, Memphis being a good example. What NBA teams will have to sort out is how much of that can be addressed with an NBA development program and all of the repetitions that come with it. The shooting is the skill that separates him from almost every other player in the class.

Why did I choose Griffin? My reasoning is below. The choice between AJ Griffin and Johnny Davis (whom I fully expect to be gone before pick 11 in the real draft) ...

I love me some Johnny Davis, but I just can’t see the Knicks passing up Griffin. He’s a New York-bred wing with good size who can absolutely shoot the lights out — 44.7% from three in his freshman season at Duke. The defense may be lacking, but Tom Thibodeau will get the best out of Griffin on that end... The choice between AJ Griffin and Johnny Davis (whom I fully expect to be gone before pick 11 in the real draft) is a difficult one. Our beloved Knicks picked at No. 11 in the first round, and I once again had the honor of making the selection.
