He had developed an extremely close relationship with Andre at the genesis of his career in the 1980s, positioned as the handler for Andre as they were traveling. White would eventually return to his preferred role in WWE, but at “WrestleMania XX” in 2004, during the match between Chris Jericho and Christian, he re-injured his shoulder during the final three-count of the match. He was often booked as the main event referee until suffering a shoulder injury at “Judgment Day” 2002 during another HIAC match between Chris Jericho and Triple H.

Tim White, who spent more than 20 years with WWE as a referee and assistant to Andre the Giant, died Sunday at 68, the company announced.

“I’m deeply saddened to hear of the passing of my dear friend Tim White,” William Regal wrote. White’s passing comes just days after the death of Dave Hebner, another longtime WWE referee. I’ll miss his Andre the giant stories and hugs. He continued to work with the company as a backstage official and talent agent until 2009. Always the nicest person in any room he was in. We would get our work done & meet after and he would tell old road stories & we’d laugh til the sun came up.

White had almost called the match off when Mankind, played by American wrestler Mick Foley, took a hard fall. He is best known for being the referee for the infamous Hell in a Cell match between Mankind and the Undertaker at King of the Ring in 1998. Over the course of his career as a WWE referee, White officiated a number of high profile matches, and was often booked as the main event referee.

Big E, Edge, and Ric Flair are among some of the many wrestlers to have paid their respects to Tim White since his passing.

Some arguably deserve that honor, perhaps even more than some of the wrestlers who have already made it in, so hopefully that policy will change in the future. White and Hebner would have referred numerous matches for both Hall of Famers and so many others over the years.
