On Father's Day, A New Dad Recalls His Near-Death Experience (WebMD)

On a day like any other this past February, Ethan Bradshaw, 30, a state trooper from North Carolina, was working out at the gym with two trooper friends ...

“I was on a typical law enforcement diet, which included eating late, not sleeping a lot, and drinking an unreal amount of caffeine,” he says. “Before this happened, I was following an old bodybuilder type of diet, which included lots of meat and few veggies or carbs,” he says. They tell me that’s the best way to prevent this from happening again, and I believe them.” “I was very emotional at the beginning,” he says. “The nurses finally coaxed her to get a shower after 10 days, and they would force her to go and get something to eat. “I went from thinking I was this strong guy who could take on the world. “I honestly don’t remember the car ride a whole lot,” he says. “Five months after my heart attack, there’s nothing I can’t do.” “I was the last one you’d think would have had a heart attack. Shortly thereafter, he collapsed and went into cardiac arrest in the waiting room. The rest is a blur as he has zero recall of what happened next. “Both told me I was having a heart attack.

Father's Day reflects value of male role models (Marshall Independent)

Father's Day became a time honored tradition in the 20th century, one that demonstrates a modern public perception on what it means to be a dad.

We realize just how fortunate we were to have had plenty of love, guidance and patience. Wives sometimes took charge of the mail and household finances. Wives began to work outside the home to achieve personal career goals rather than out of necessity. A Farmer’s Almanac publication points out how fathers were traditionally the unquestioned heads of their households. World War II was an added boost because of support for the war effort. The Great Depression led to added popularity.

We use narrative to make sense of our lives, sweetie, to give shape to the entropy of the human experience, to spark recognition of our individual emotions in a distant and distinct human subjectivity. Be sure to mention how expensive the parking garages in the city are, so I can assume you’re having financial problems and slip you a twenty on your way out. Fear of the city, based on the knowledge that it is crowded and full of murderers, is a value I’ve spent a lifetime trying to instill in you. Maybe you were just on the verge of giving up and paying to park in a garage. No more telling you a story about a parking spot I found, in the hopes you’ll reciprocate. Just remember, my daughter, if you do opt in to Bitcoin, there is literally no limit to your potential. While the pennies in your piggy bank will never stand a chance against inflation, you will be able to stack sats, and these simply can’t be inflated away. While I so keenly wish you could be born free, your career choices (as is the same for most young men and women in our society) remain locked in a cage by inflation. A smile beams across my face when — to my surprise — you struggle to reach your hand out and grab my nose! While I do want the best for you, I do not plan to hand it to you on a silver platter. While you have yet to be born, my heart is already warm with your love.

On Father’s Day, we pay tribute to the dads, stepdads, grandfathers, and father figures who lift us up on their shoulders so that we can reach our full potential. Let us honor our fathers, living and deceased, and show them the love and gratitude they deserve. We provided historic funding to help parents access child care during the pandemic, and we continue to fight for lower costs and higher quality child care for the long term. Like so many Americans, I am thankful for the precious time I have had both as a son and as a father. He informed the way that I raised my own children — and how they continue to raise theirs. I wondered how the flight of my imagination could be so high that I could consider spending a fortune on a watch. The best present to give my old man would be the sincerest of wishes. Thinking of the possible consequences of such a rash decision, I began to feel a little light-headed. In a bid to simplify the process, I decided to limit myself to one category: self-care. Luckily, luxury items like these cannot be bought with the ease of a click that enables you to buy shaving kits online. The unique and personalised products with great packaging available online have motivated people to buy unique products, and gifts for Father's day are no exception," said Tarun Joshi, founder and CEO of Mumbai-based Join Ventures, a D2C house of brands for celebration. I exclaimed as I chanced upon a two-day old GQ India article on the top five luxury watches to buy for Father's Day. He was able to deliver the key message '19 June, Yaad Karlo' for us in a very authentic and relatable way. A simple Google search led me to a number of gift items designed specifically for men across a heterogeneous price range: The Man Company's A Man's Daily Ritual Kit; FlowerAura's Flower & Gift Combo; IGP's Delish Treats for Dad; Beardo's Man of the Moment Gift Kit, et al. Father's Day Can be Hard. Here's How to Handle the Holiday. (The New York Times)

For people grieving a loss or facing thoughts “about what could have been or what may never be,” there are ways to find solace.

“It’s just a nice way to create meaning out of the rubble,” she said. “It’s trite to say, but it gets better,” Mr. James said. “When we expect that a family is forever, or that parents unconditionally love their children and vice versa, it can be hard when that doesn’t manifest in our actual lives,” said Kristina M. Scharp, a professor at the University of Washington who studies difficult family transitions. Studies have shown that giving to a cause that’s meaningful to you can help you feel happier. Ms. Bidwell Smith advised “leaning into spaces where other people are feeling the same as you,” by joining an online support group or listening to podcasts that deal with loss. “You just feel so invisible.” Kacie Reed’s father was recently diagnosed with inoperable Stage 4 cancer and this Father’s Day “will probably be his last one,” said Ms. Reed, 30, a stay-at-home mother in Greenville, S.C. However, because of their differing political opinions, “he’ll barely speak to me anymore,” she said. In the week leading up to the holiday, make sure you’re getting ample sleep and exercise, said grief expert and therapist Claire Bidwell Smith. “When we’re in a good physical state, we can better regulate our emotions,” she said. Even taking a small action, like opting out of an email, can give you a sense of agency,” Ms. Soffer said. Think carefully about how you want to spend the day, Ms. Soffer said. For those dealing with infertility or stillbirth, the day can prompt distressing thoughts “about what could have been or what may never be.” And while there’s no guaranteed solution to getting through the day, there are some things you can do to take the sting out of it.

How to Make it a Productive and Exciting Father's Day (Entrepreneur)

Father's Day comes and goes every year. It's easy to get complacent and go to the card aisle at the local grocery store for a Father's Day gift and call...

Father's Day can be far more than just grilling with the family and a handmade card. Whatever your dad and his friends enjoy doing but rarely get the opportunity to do so should be your focus. But if they're open to something, it might just be what the group as a whole would most enjoy for the day. Set up a dad date if your dad is the social type but rarely has time for activities outside the home or workplace. Having the whole family agree to participate in an adventure, not in the regular routine, could be especially meaningful to your dad. But after all, it's one day a year, so just make sure the ladder is secure — and let him fiddle. From father-son lookalike contests to entries that require you to write about your dad's qualities, you can show off your dad in a public space. A wide variety of local contests can be a fun way to celebrate your dad. At the bare minimum, you can find that embarrassing family picture of your dad and share it with the world. But what if there was a way to make the day more memorable or productive for your dad? The trick to making your dad's Father's Day a little more special than usual is by doing something that's appreciated or unexpected. For example, Ace Hardware recently announced a contest in which the winner receives a custom-made pair of grilling shoes and a grill.

Opinion | Happy Father's Day to Roy Ayers, My Brilliant, Absent Dad (The New York Times)

Most of us with absent fathers think, “What about me?” We rarely stop to ask, “What about him?”

In that moment at the screening, I witnessed my father in his element, and I saw a side of him I’d never seen. The Times is committed to publishing a diversity of letters to the editor. I have always felt uncomfortable talking about my father, even with my closest friends. And I saw a 28-year-old man who looked a lot like I did at that age — a younger version of myself, with all the passion and promise of youth. I’ve felt our connection when I see our similarities — our high cheekbones and our physical laughs. I saw an energetic, disciplined talent who was on the cusp of writing and recording some of his best music — some of the best music of a golden era. I’m no closer to my father this Father’s Day, but I’ve made peace with that. Though we live in the same city, my father and I haven’t had a meaningful conversation since that lunch years ago. But when I finally did, it allowed me to let some things go. Music took 100 percent of his energy, and there was no room for me in that equation. About 20 minutes into the concert documentary, the exuberant host Tony Lawrence shouts, “Ladies and gentlemen, from right here in Harlem, soul time!” When I tried to stay in touch with Roy after that lunch, he rushed through phone calls or left them largely unanswered.

The Father's Day Gift Guide For Bitcoiners (Bitcoin Magazine)

Dad's don't necessarily need special or fancy gifts, but Bitcoiners want to make sure our dads have the Bitcoin tools and gadgets they need.

The stories in the magazine can help your dad view bitcoin as a fundamentally world-changing technological development. Another cool idea would be to get your dad his own Bitcoin full node to verify his own transactions and enforce the blockchain rules. Bitcoin is a hedge against inflation; it’s a hedge against tyranny. But for the dad who wants to treasure his new gift of bitcoin, I recommend starting with a wallet. Another route would be a subscription to the Bitcoin Magazine print edition. If he’s on the fence, this may help your dad hop onto the lifeboat. The Coldcard is a classic choice with tons of functionality. At 21 million bitcoin to go around, there’s not even enough for all the millionaires in the world to own a whole coin. The idea came from one of my Bitcoin buddies, who published an article about gifting his parents bitcoin using a Ballet physical wallet. Go ahead and have the kids draw some pictures and paint some rocks, things I proudly display in my office, and save a few bucks for something that will last for a while. Assuming we’ve avoided a hyperinflationary catastrophe, that’s probably still a pretty solid vacation for you and the family. I like to refer to many of the toys we get our kids as presents as “future trash.” It’s an unfortunate by-product of the fiat society we live in.

BookLovers: A Fathers' Day Tribute (SouthCoastToday.com)

I tried, this week, to think of Great American Books about fatherhood. Hunted for passages and quotes that conveyed the epitome of fatherhood.

I wanted a book about the man with no e-mail. I wanted a story about the one whose form we imitated when we shot baskets on the street. I was looking for a book about a wood-chopper and sea glass-collector. I was looking for an example of a character who was some kind of Cowboy Poet. Guitar-picker and crossword-puzzler. The dad dragging hurdles and javelins back to the fieldhouse. That rich smoky smell and bird song in the golden afternoon light.

Why You Should Stack Sats To Celebrate Father's Day (Bitcoin Magazine)

It's not only the duty of the Bitcoin fathers out there, but the obligation to continue to stack sats for our children.

This is our duty, not only to give our kids an alternative to the future, but to share the knowledge that is required for them to be successful in it as well. For all of the Bitcoin fathers out there, take time to reflect on your journey down the Bitcoin rabbit hole and how you will be able to share that knowledge with your kids. It is our obligation as fathers to set our kids up for success. With kids as young as mine, they won't be able to send me sats for Father’s Day this year, and that’s OK. It’s my duty and any other father’s out there — new, old or just becoming a dad — to stack sats for our kids. I can't predict the future or begin to know the shape of it, but what I know today is that Bitcoin gives me a sense of hope and a degree of freedom from current economic and geopolitical happenings, because I am able to pass something of value on to them. If your dad is like mine and the rest of my family, they probably have little to no interest in Bitcoin. To this day, when I call my parents they ask me how “Bit-CON” is doing.

Father's Day once was highly political — and could become so again (The Washington Post)

The holiday's lack of history allowed activists to give it meaning after America's divorce laws changed.

The Seattle-based organization Husbands Against Dirty Divorce (HADD) planned a Father’s Day brunch in 1986 to bring attention to the fact that the holiday was not accorded the same respect as the other spring holidays. The politicization of Father’s Day has subsided since the 1980s. By the 1980s, fathers’ rights groups across the country planned events and protests to mark the holiday, often focusing on calls for a legal presumption of joint custody. Over time, lawmakers on the state and federal levels responded to the critiques of the no-fault divorce system that drove Father’s Day advocacy on both sides. Fathers’ rights advocates objected to being used as “wallets” and claimed that their ex-wives purposely kept them from seeing their children in violation of visitation orders. The experience of divorce drew many White, middle-class women to the burgeoning women’s movement. The majority of divorcing couples in the early to mid-20th century did not have children, but the “tender years doctrine” meant that in most cases, mothers retained custody of their minor children if they did. No-fault divorce laws, however, did not deal with some of the most contested aspects of marital dissolution, especially questions about finances and child custody. The entire landscape changed in 1969, with the advent of no-fault divorce. These former housewives and newly single mothers — the vast majority of whom had custody of their children — also complained vociferously about their difficulties in collecting alimony (if awarded) and child support, further contributing to their precarious financial circumstances. This understanding of Father’s Day, though, misses the ways in which Americans have used the holiday as a political vehicle. By the mid-20th century, many Americans regarded this “fault” system as something of a joke.

Then it was the big course and they were so excited to play on the same course that I was. I like to say that I almost had triplets because of the app being born that same day, and it was just a crazy experience. But for two little dudes to be that into golf and understand the rules and be quiet in your back swing and respected and walk with their own clubs and carry their own things. We got them a little putting mat and they did putting in the house, and then we would go to the driving range and believe it or not, they learned the swing just from watching it on TV. At one point in their lives, in the 2018 Masters, I had recorded the final round on our DVR. I'm not kidding that at two and a half years old, they watched that every single day for six months. For the parents, for my wife and I, it was okay, we're going to get some semblance of normalcy back to our lives, but the boys are going to be together. Because I remember when I was a kid, I loved going to practice with my dad, with my friends. It truly was a lack of sleep and then a lack of clarity the rest of the day. I had twin boys in the hospital and I had PR interviews that I was supposed to be doing for the app launch, which I had been working on for like 18 months or two years. I think I freaked out for a few hours when I realized this child was on the way, and then I happened to be on the way to visit my dad that same day. I got to talk to my dad in the wake of this nuclear bombshell going off in my life that, oh my God, I've got a child on the way. I know what I've heard from friends or seen in TV or in the movies, but as I get older, it's clearer and clearer that that's only part of the picture. She climbs up into her loft to be by herself and sits quietly in what looks like a meditative pose and sits with this thing, that we have this kind of like a glitter snow globe kind of thing.

Archibald: The perfect Father's Day gift (al.com)

This is an opinion column. I got an early Father's Day surprise from my oldest son. A box of vintage treats from the '60s and '70s. Thoughtful.

It’s OK. It’s enough to know those kids are out there, and OK, and I am their dad. If I didn’t know better I’d say they listened to their mom and me. They had “Best Dad Ever” mugs to go with my shirt, but how many lies can you tell yourself? Because I see it in them. They can speak with sharp tongues sometimes, but they are not afraid to use their voices. Sometimes I wonder if my advice to them is even relevant in such a world. I’ve come to believe it is. But then you watch those little bundles get older and start to build families of their own in a world scarier than anything my generation knew. They long for a world of fairness and stand for that in their own ways. I hope they picked up on that along the way. Which means you’ve gotta be careful about what you say and do. Anything you say or do can and will be used against you in the court of life.

Today is Father's Day. It's a weird day for me. My dad was a deadbeat, a lifelong disappointment. By Shawn VanDiver. June 19, 2022 6 AM PT.

I don’t know if I should be recognized on Father’s Day. But I do know I’ll take the day as a chance to recommit myself to being the kind of dad I want to be. I love my family so much, more than I thought was possible, but I also know I’m not showing them the way that I should, that I’m not prioritizing them like I should. My dad was anything but. I travel a lot for work and for my passion projects. I know it’s hard. As far as I could tell, fatherhood was never his priority, just like how on the happiest day of my life, all he cared about was the tacos. I drop off the baby, and the teenager if he slept in. We divide the day and the responsibilities between us. I want them to have it better than I did. My wife and I have two kids. I remember he wouldn’t stop complaining about the food. Today is Father’s Day. It’s a weird day for me.

In college, Peter Strzelecki pitched the day before his father's funeral. The guts he showed inspired the Brewers to sign him.

Perhaps Strzelecki will get a chance to pitch in a major-league game on Father’s Day. He knows it would have been his dad’s dream come true to see him do so. A few teams had already reached out to Strzelecki post-draft about signing as a free agent when the Brewers called. After that start, Strzelecki was locked in on the mound. “Those guys need to perform right away and that’s a lot of pressure,” Burns said. After a day or two passed, though, Strzelecki settled on the idea of not only returning to college and continuing along with baseball, but making a start that weekend. The sheer determination to make that start, leave everything out there on the mound he showed caught my attention.” Burns had met Strzeleck in the off-season and the two had developed somewhat of a relationship at this point. What followed was a remarkable story of a son honoring his late father by displaying the will to compete that he instilled in him at a young age,. He didn’t know if he could go back to college and be away from his family and, in particular, his mom. Strzelecki had just spoken with his dad the day before on the phone. “He was dedicated to taking care of all my siblings. In college, Peter Strzelecki pitched the day before his father's funeral.

Zelensky in Father's Day message praises dads who defend Ukraine (The Washington Post)

The war with Russia has killed 100 to 200 soldiers, most of them men, every day, Ukrainian officials say.

The weapons: Ukraine is making use of weapons such as Javelin antitank missiles and Switchblade “kamikaze” drones, provided by the United States and other allies. Stoltenberg’s forecast, in an interview published Saturday in Germany’s Bild newspaper, comes as the United States and its allies are preparing for a drawn-out conflict. The fight: A slowly regenerating Russian army is making incremental gains in eastern Ukraine against valiant but underequipped Ukrainian forces. “We are doing everything we can to ensure that children will see their parents returning home from war,” the parliament’s caption said. And no matter how difficult it is — to protect and defend the most precious. In an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper in April, he spoke fondly of his teenage daughter and joked that “without knocking the door, I can’t speak with my daughter.”

The New Wayfarer has slightly smaller lenses and is less canted forward, so Pop can have all the style in a sleeker package. If Dad wants to give takeout the boot and get into cooking, this 17-piece set will form a solid basis for a kitchen loadout. There are several different settings for different brewing needs, and it won't take up too much room on the counter either. This basic e-reader earned second place in our guide to the Best Kindles. It lacks the page-turn buttons and modern charging capabilities of the more expensive Paperwhite, but the 2019 Kindle is still a capable little gadget. From frying and sauce pans of varying sizes to a three-piece nylon cooking tool set, he'll have everything he needs to become the household's newest chef. And it does all of that at a budget price when many espresso machines cost a pretty penny. The Totallee is one of our favorite iPhone cases because it offers a bump in scratch and drop protection over a caseless phone, but at only 0.02 inches thick it's not chunky enough to make Dad feel like he's carrying a brick. It includes an iPhone case that allows Dad to mount all three lenses that come with the kit. Our first Father's Day without my dad I Opinion (nj.com)

Steve DiGregorio was a football icon at Princeton University and Nutley High School.

Those relationships —and the building back up of those relationships — have deepened my appreciation for the people and the net of support we have been so lucky to encounter. This Father’s Day, my first one without him, has taken on a new meaning, not just to reflect on my relationship with my dad but also on building back those relationships in the wake of his passing. I was losing someone who had the unique ability to set high expectations and instill in you the belief that you could meet those expectations. My mom and I became adept at shuffling limited visitor passes at the hospital between his former players to skirt hospital limits on visitors, who were often giddy to relive some antics of their college days. This parade of friends and family who had rallied around us before picked back up in the summer of 2021, when my dad went into the hospital for what would be the last time and when he came home on hospice care. I had driven him to his treatment that day and later on, we were joined by our friend Jerry Price who brought along a lunchbox and his seemingly endless Rolodex of stories; this day it was about John McPhee meeting Dwight Eisenhower and his son’s refusal to pay his speeding tickets.
