Texas was the consensus No. 1 team coming into the season, so it's not surprising to seem them atop this particular heap. Our own R.J. Anderson has gone in-depth on each CWS team's best or at least most interesting draft prospect, so we'll point you in his direction for the full analysis. That means we still haven't had a repeat national champion since South Carolina won it all in 2010 and 2011. Also absent from Omaha this year is Tennessee, who entered the tournament as the No. 1 overall seed. The regionals are a double-elimination format that continues until only one team is left in each of those 16 brackets. At that point, the slates are wiped clean, and those final two teams play a best-of-three series for the national championship. So in the ongoing interests of being there for those with nowhere left to turn, we have put together a brief primer on this year's CWS. Better still, we have done so by means of the timeless FAQ format that is a hallmark of ancient sacred texts. - Stanford: Advanced out of Stanford regional that also included UC-Santa Barbara, Texas State, and Binghamton. Defeated UConn in the super regional. In order to preempt online rage, we'll list those eight teams in alphabetical order. - Notre Dame: Advanced out of Statesboro regional that also included Georgia Southern, Texas Tech, and UNC-Greensboro. Defeated Tennessee in the super regional. - Arkansas: Advanced out of Stillwater regional that also included Oklahoma State, Missouri State, and Grand Canyon. Defeated North Carolina in the super regional. The 2022 College World Series gets underway on Friday at Omaha's Charles Schwab Field. Although the CWS is increasing in popularity and drawing more and more attention and eyeballs, it's still a bit unfamiliar to some casuals.

“We struggled down the stretch on the mound a little bit. And I think we’re starting to live up to that expectation a little bit. “And you take it to heart. “We’re excited to go out there, bring our best every day and focus on one game at a time.” Not just to get here, we wanted to be set ourselves up for the chance to win it. And you’ve got to forget it at some point. “We know the challenge we’ve got into and we’re just excited to be here. And I think that the last two weeks have given us an opportunity to prove it. “They’re a good team,” Williams said. “You can say whatever you want,” Noland said. Ole Miss baseball players and coaches reacted to finally making it to the College World Series after going "to Hell and back" this season.
For Elko, someone who grew up watching the College World Series, getting to end his career where he is is one of the ultimate joys. Notre Dame isn’t going to be seen as the team with the most talent of the eight playing in Omaha the next few weeks but they might be the best. This is a very veteran group who came within one game of the College World Series last year, ultimately falling in the Super Regional to Mississippi State who won the whole tournament. Playing in an elimination game in Omaha is crazy enough but to have Texas play Texas A&M in the College World Series? That’s insane. In fact, Texas has never scored less than five runs in game this entire postseason until they faced Notre Dame. I’ll give credit to the Notre Dame pitching staff because they had some great stuff as Texas just wasn’t able to get a whole lot going as they didn’t get a single extra base hit in nine innings. Last week, the field was cut down to 16 in the Super Regionals and now, the journey is complete as eight teams will make the trip to Omaha. The Texas Longhorns faced the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in game one and lost.

McDaniel: I like homers, so Oklahoma shortstop Graham and Texas first baseman Melendez go to the top of my list. I can't imagine what it would be like with a national title on the line. The Cardinal struggled with that in the first two rounds, as they needed to beat Texas State and UConn twice to advance from each round. The Cardinal earned four of their last five wins by holding opponents to four runs or less. Notre Dame downed one of the top aces in college baseball for the second straight round. That team would only need one win over the program that emerges from the losers' bracket. They will play Sunday for the ideal position to come out of the top side. That could be a bad sign for the Stanford Cardinal and Auburn Tigers, who take to the field on Saturday in the two opening games in the bottom half of the bracket.

He quickly struck out the first two hitters he faced before Turner picked up his third single of the afternoon. He needed just 10 pitches to retire the side in order for the first time. Lanzilli is then hit by a pitch to put two runners on with two outs in the frame. Wallace follows him with a sharp single through the right side. The call of out at first base is under review. Arkansas picked up a 10-4 victory over Stanford in the 1985 College World Series but have lost each of the last five matchups with the Cardinal, including a 5-0 defeat earlier this season. - Moore follows with the fourth Arkansas hit of the inning with a sharp single to right field. Through four innings, Noland has thrown 31 pitches and induced six groundouts.
It was the first of eight hits the Razorbacks got off of Stanford ace Alex Williams, who lasted 5⅓ innings in Arkansas' 17-2 win over the No. 2-seed Cardinal.
First baseman Peyton Stovall, the only Razorback without a hit in the game, reached on a fielder's choice. Arkansas started hitting Williams early and chased him in the fifth inning. He did it with just one strikeout, too, but thanks to the Arkansas defense, Noland lasted 7⅔ innings with one run allowed on 78 pitches. But he got out of the first inning and retired the next nine batters he faced. The Razorbacks got free bases on three walks and a hit batter, and one of their runs came in on a wild pitch. The right-hander gave up a leadoff home run to Stanford center fielder Brock Jones, followed by a pair of one-out singles.

After DeLucia got the Tigers out in a hurry in the bottom of the sixth, the Rebels went to work again offensively in the top of the seventh but were not able to score. Auburn was quickly back up to try to close the gap. There were back to back singles from Sonny DiChiara and Peirce, and the Tigers had their first run as Farquhar scored. The play was reviewed but stood. However, Alderman came home to score, and it was 4-0 Ole Miss. In his last start, he didn't make it out of the first inning. Ole Miss was faced with a decision; it was rewarded for its faith in the starter, who painted a corner against Auburn grad transfer Brooks Carlson for a big strikeout. Gonzalez had a gritty outing considering the circumstances of his lacking slider, but his five innings of four-run ball weren't enough. The Tigers finally threatened in the seventh with three consecutive hits to start the inning, making it 5-1 with two on. Joseph Gonzalez wasn't the only pitching option, but Auburn wanted its Sunday ace on the mound. In the last 24 innings of that series, the Tigers found a way to score nine runs, but on just 14 hits.

That’s all the Tigers could muster, though, as the Rebels stuck with DeLucia, who worked his way out of the jam by retiring the next three Auburn hitters: a Brooks Carlson strikeout, a Brody Moore fly ball to center and a Kason Howell flare to second base. Auburn couldn’t make anything out of that rare opportunity against DeLucia, who previously faced the Tigers in a 3 1/3-inning relief appearance back during the opening weekend of SEC play. DeLucia was nails on Saturday evening for the Rebels, tossing 7 2/3 innings of one-run ball, allowing just four hits while striking out 10 and issuing zero walks on 114 pitches. The ball, launched off the bat of Kevin Graham, just cleared the wall — and the reach of Bello’s glove — and deposited into Auburn’s bullpen. Those near misses were amplified by the team’s issues at the plate, with Auburn unable to solve Ole Miss right-hander Dylan DeLucia. The Tigers’ left fielder crashed into the wall and fell to the ground.
