Straight red: Denver eliminated from 2026 World Cup host city ... (Colorado Public Radio)

The World Cup won't be too far from soccer fans in Colorado, however — Dallas, Houston and Kansas City will be the central U.S..

That’s based on the global TV audience of 3.5 billion, increased tax revenue from tourism, foot traffic from 450,000 visitors spending money at local businesses and an enduring legacy and recognition as a World Cup host city. A hundred thousand Colorado kids and adults participate in the sport. And Denver has one other thing. Denver could boast a world-class airport with easy transit access to downtown, a large stadium with Empower Field at Mile High, ample hotel capacity and plenty of tourist attractions. State officials hosted FIFA last year to make the case why Denver should be chosen — they used the city’s transportation, accommodations, sustainability and Empower Field’s infrastructure as selling points — but several news outlets reported earlier this year that the bid was underwhelming. Because the 2026 World Cup is jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, international cities like Vancouver and Mexico City were also chosen.

Kansas City selected as host site for 2026 FIFA World Cup (KSHB)

Kansas City will welcome the world to town in four years. It has been selected to host matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing the most-viewed sporting ...

A University of Tennessee study projected a $700 million economic impact for Nashville if it was awarded World Cup matches. "... I know that he would be absolutely thrilled by today's announcement." Kansas City has hosted USMNT games, including World Cup qualifiers, as well as international exhibitions and CONCACAF Gold Cup matches, but it did not host World Cup games in 1994 — the only year in which the U.S. hosted the men’s World Cup. Hunt was the first owner of the Sporting KC franchise, which was originally known as the Kansas City Wiz. The family sold the team in 2006. It also did not host the 1999 or 2003 Women’s World Cup, both of which were staged in the U.S. The U.S. Open Cup has borne late Chiefs founder Lamar Hunt’s name since 1999 and he was one of the co-founders of Major League Soccer, which FIFA mandated when it awarded the U.S. its first World Cup in 1994. Its soccer-specific inventory includes the Compass Minerals National Performance Center, a state-of-the-art facility that is expected to serve as a home base for one or more teams during the World Cup, along with Children’s Mercy Park, home of Sporting Kansas City and the Kansas City Current. It has been selected to host matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, bringing one of the most-viewed sporting events on the planet to the City of Fountains. The U.S. made a joint bid along with Canada and Mexico to host the 2026 tournament, which was awarded to the three North American countries over a bid from Morocco in 2018. The announcement ends KC 2026’s seven-year effort to bring the World Cup to Kansas City on a high note. Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who is part-owner of Sporting Kansas City, was chosen as the celebrity to congratulate Kansas City on its selection. KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Kansas City will welcome the world to town in four years.

Lumen Field Selected As Host Venue For FIFA World Cup 2026 (Seahawks.com)

Lumen Field, the home of the Seahawks, will be one of the venues to host games during the 2026 World Cup.

While the World Cup is as big as it gets when it comes to global sporting events, Lumen Field is no stranger to hosting big games. Bringing World Cup games to Seattle is further fulfillment of the vision for the stadium Paul Allen asked fans to support in 1997 via Referendum 48. We are grateful to FIFA for recognizing Lumen Field as one of North America's most premier sports and entertainment venues and entrusting us to host such a prestigious international event."

FIFA has announced the venues that will host matches during the 2026 World Cup in the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

All of the 2026 World Cup will be played on natural grass. "Together with our good friends in Canada and Mexico, we couldn't be more excited to work with FIFA to host what we think will be the greatest World Cup in history. "Our stated goal is to have the finals," Hunt said. "When we built the stadium, it was to have great, great events," Jones said. In 1994, the Cotton Bowl hosted World Cup matches. To be able to participate in such an event is ... really awesome and inspiring." Originally starting with candidates from 44 cities and 49 stadiums across North America, the process to select venues began in 2017. Not making the list were areas such as Chicago, Minneapolis and Arizona, due to what city officials described as issues with FIFA's financial demands. We'll be engaging with all of the cities that weren't chosen to host matches. "I want to congratulate all the bid cities that will host games. Once the tournament reaches the quarterfinal stage, all remaining knockout round games will be held in the U.S. "We will be working in clusters, making sure that the teams and the fans don't have to travel too much in different areas: West, Central and East."

Mexico City and Guadalajara (1970, 1986), along with Monterrey (1986), have been World Cup hosts in the past, with the Azteca hosting the final in both 1970 and 1986 as well as the infamous “Hand of God” Argentina-England quarterfinal during the latter tournament. FIFA picks 2026 World Cup cities, including Atlanta, Miami ... (CNBC)

Atlanta, Houston, Miami, Philadelphia, Seattle and Kansas City, Missouri, were among the cities picked after missing out on hosting the 1994 tournament.

The U.S. selections included none of the nine stadiums used in 1994. "We have to move out some of the pinch points," Smith said. "That's one of the high priority areas for us to focus on." FIFA has gradually moved back the kickoff time of the final from 3:30 p.m. EDT to 10 a.m. EDT for this year's tournament, which is 10 p.m. in Beijing. New stadiums were selected in five areas used in 1994. The 1994 tournament set records with a 3.59 million total attendance and average of 68,991. Infantino's goal of reaching the top of U.S. sports appears to be quite a reach. "I think this part of the world doesn't realize what will happen here in 2026," Infantino said. "These three countries will be upside down. "I know it was giggles and laughs," Canada Soccer Association President Victor Montagliani said. The capacities of the U.S. stadiums for 2026 are all 60,000 and higher. The 16 cities of the first World Cup spread across three nations were revealed, and FIFA President Gianni Infantino made a bold statement summing up the goal of the 2026 tournament, to be played largely in the United States.

'A missed opportunity': Why Nashville lost bid to host 2026 FIFA ... (The Tennessean)

Tennessee Titans CEO Burke Nihill said 75% the conversation with FIFA about hosting the 2026 World Cup at Nissan Stadium regarded the field itself.

"I mean big international games, wherever in the city and we'll always be after that." FIFA's requirements for Nissan Stadium were to knock out the corners, add modern and sufficient amount of VIP hospitality areas and a new field surface system. "I'm not willing to blame the stadium," Spyridon said. Despite its knack for a massive party, Nashville couldn't convince FIFA its current stadium would suffice with a newborn venue on the horizon. It turns out uncertainty around the stadium surface led to the World Cup bid's demise. Nashville led with Nissan Stadium for its bid.
