2022 U.S. Open leaderboard: Live coverage, golf scores today ... (CBSSports.com)

The 122nd U.S. Open gets underway Thursday with the national championship taking place at one of the oldest golf courses in the United States.

The major championship record is poor, but take out his missed cuts at the PGA Championship and The Players Championship, and Cantlay has unbelievable this year. McIlroy has top 10s in three of his last four majors and three straight U.S. Opens. The fact that he hasn't captured one of these coveted championships since 2014 is obscene given some of the low rounds he's shot, but he finally seems to be back to form. This is the best Rory has played entering a major in quite a while, and he's even coming off a title defense at the RBC Canadian Open. McIlroy also seems to feel like he has the game of golf on his back given his staunch support of the PGA Tour and the traditions of the game. If he plays his game, he'll be in the mix, and we've already seen him this season hang with the big dogs with wins at The Players Championship and the Sentry Open plus top-five finishes at the Masters and the RSM Classic. Brookline is going to demand precisely what Smith can bring: a killer short game for its lightning-quick greens and precision off the tees for the numerous blind shots golfers will be making this week. J.T. is one of the three best iron players on the planet, and his hot putter has translated to wins and near wins for the last two months. He's playing the best golf of his career and has paired an ever-present confidence that nobody in the world is better than him with a wisdom that can only be attained with age and experience. The Olympian has pulled out of the 122nd U.S. Open citing health concerns. Four days of major championship golf on a menacing course in a terrific city. Behind them are Adam Scott, Max Homa and a 75% Jordan Spieth. For those of you not in the know, the three-time major winner is experiencing some tummy issues -- pro move not wearing white pants. Those two legends of the game make way for new ones as world No. 3 Rory McIlroy begin his quest for major No. 5 in the early hours of the first round. For all the nonsense that's happened this week, what better Day 1 story could there be than a lifelong journeyman whose son is serving as caddie leading after the first 18 holes?

Only Merion, with 19, has been the site of more, and the Open is scheduled to return there in 2030. And the Country Club has it.” “The ghosts of the past matter. “The players love this place,” Bodenhamer said. The Australian player Cameron Smith called the Country Club “my favorite U.S. Open venue I think I’ve been to. That year, the U.S. Open was held at Merion Golf Club, outside Philadelphia. It, too, has a small footprint and is in a residential suburban neighborhood. There is a short, downhill par-3 that hasn’t been used in a U.S. Open since 1913. But the tournament proved to be a success and soon Bodenhamer was in touch with officials at the Country Club to see if there was any interest in hosting a U.S. Open. There was. But the club is tucked away in an exclusive neighborhood in a Boston suburb with little room to accommodate the growing demands of modern major tournaments. “The footprint was small,” Bodenhamer said. Explaining the decision in 2002, John Cornish, the chairman of the 1999 Ryder Cup matches at the club, said, “we were faced with the need to downsize the scope of services, local corporations and the media. It was the site of arguably the most important moment in American golf history — the 1913 U.S. Open won by the amateur Francis Ouimet in a playoff over the celebrated British professionals Ted Ray and Harry Vardon.

That's going to play as basically a 100-yard shot for the pros, I think, and that's just ... *chef's kiss.* He has a solo second and a T8 at the first two major tournaments this year, and this course is a really nice setup for him. The 2022 U.S. Open will be available via streaming on Peacock with exclusive windows as well as featured groups. In what has been somewhat of a downturn of a season after last year’s best-in-class form, this is the perfect opportunity for Rahm to get back on track. He has bogeyed Nos. 1, 3 and now 4, with a par at No. 2. None of this is secret anymore — hell, two decades have passed — but in Boston, old habits die hard, and when one guy from the neighborhood tells a story about another guy from the neighborhood, it’s best not to blab. Curtis Strange won the last U.S. Open at The Country Club, which was held in 1988. Like Southern Hills, designer Gil Hanse has been working with The Country Club to prepare for this U.S. Open. The ball rams into the jar and Leonard takes off running. “See over there,” the caddie says, pointing to a spot on the green. Those are the stories in the annals. A Rory or JT or Speith or Rahm. I think they all have a good chance.

U.S. Open 2022 live updates: Jordan Spieth struggles early, Rory ... (GolfDigest.com)

U.S. Open 2022 live updates: The latest news and analysis from our writers at the 122nd U.S. Open at Brookline.

6:48 a.m.: The action is officially underway at The Country Club! Michael Thorbjornsen, a 20-year-old amateur from Massachusetts teeing it up at Brookline (sound familiar?) had the honor of hitting the first tee shot off the first tee. What a great thrill for the 58-year-old. 8:03 a.m.: Hideki Matusyama sticks his tee shot at the par-3 11th hole, which is playing as the easiest hole on the course thus far, to grab a share of the lead. A tough early bogey from Spieth ... and just by the eye test, he doesn't look 100 percent post-stomach bug. Again, just like Spieth, people were down on Morikawa on the eve of the U.S. Open because he admitted to some reporters he was having trouble hitting a fade. Hopefully the Mighty Quinn's friends and family screenshotted that shot of the leaderboard while he was up there. And speaking of struggles, Hideki just double bogeyed the par-4 12th hole after that birdie at 11. 8:30 a.m.: Russell Henley is the first player to 2-under, birdieing the 10th and 12th holes early in his round. 9:14 p.m.: Maybe not the biggest name but qualifier Harry Hall with a beautiful shot on the par 3 11th just north of the hole. 8:40 a.m.: Henley has company at the top, as Collin Morikawa just rolled another nice birdie putt in at the fifth hole. Adam Scott doesn't put enough on it and the ball will find its way to the bottom of the steep eighth incline. Of course, the beauty of a U.S. Open are the never-ending storylines that its competitors present itself.

If you want to see what every hole looks like, I recommend watching the video below... Diamond was absent last week at the RBC Canadian Open as he and his wife welcomed the arrival of their second child. For someone who is so good a lot of the time, Patrick Cantlay's Major record is pedestrian to say the least. Measuring at just 315 yards and downwind, this hole will see a lot of birdies today I think. After chopping it down the par-4 13th, Rory makes an excellent seven-foot putt for par to stay at level. A slight cut and he has 10 feet or so to get to one-under. Homa made his birdie putt by the way on the 6th and he is also to one-under. Amateur Travis Vick just missed a short birdie putt to do the same. Unfortunately I didn't see it because Sky wanted to take us down to the driving range instead... Great to see Rory start well again, just like he did at Southern Hills last month. Great to see him starting well after four consecutive Major missed cuts. England's Callum Tarren gets into the red thanks to a birdie at the 16th.

Rory McIlroy unloads on bunker in fit of U.S. Open rage, still shoots 67 (Golf.com)

Rory McIlroy had a fantastic round to begin the 2022 U.S. Open at The Country Club, despite an emotional blowup on one hole.

McIlroy birdied the next two holes before he failed to get up and down on 9 to make his only bogey of the day. He pumped his fist as the ball rolled into the cup, which kept him at two under and one back of the early lead. McIlroy, who enters this week coming off a win at the RBC Canadian Open, has four major titles in his career, although none since 2014. McIlroy lost his drive out to the right and it landed in an awkward spot, in gnarly grass, just outside of the bunker. McIlroy started on the back nine at The Country Club and made the turn in two under, and he was still at the number when he arrived to the drivable par-4 5th, his 14th hole of the day. With a bad lie in the thick stuff and his feet well below him, McIlroy hacked out but only advanced the ball a few yards.

"Again, some of these reactions that maybe you saw out there today, whether it be hitting the sand on 5 or the club throw on 9, you just have to be so precise and so exact at this golf tournament, maybe compared to some others," McIlroy said. It was the 21st victory of his career, which moved him past Norman in career wins. He pushed his approach shot to the right of the green and threw his club in frustration. But, yeah, you're going to encounter things this week that you don't usually come across the other weeks of the year, and you just have to try to accept them as best you can." After making birdies on Nos. 7 and 8 to move to 4-under, McIlroy lost his cool again on the par-4 ninth, his final hole. "I'm just being me. "I gave the sand a couple of whacks because I'd already messed it up, so it wasn't like it was much more work for [caddie] Harry [Diamond]," McIlroy said. The margins are just so fine in this tournament, and I think you can sort of see that out there with some of the reactions." It was an eventful opening round for McIlroy at the golf course outside Boston. He started on the back nine and carded a bogey-free, 2-under 33. U.S. Open 2022: Rory McIlroy may be shouldering a sport, but he ... (CBSSports.com)

The four-time major champion shot 3 under on Thursday to open play at The Country Club.

As the U.S. Open finds its footing, though, it will be nice to shelve the talk of brouhahas and scuttlebutt between organizations that are fighting an inequitable yet inevitable war. "I was sort of cursing the USGA whenever I was going up to the ball. A major championship that, based on the unintended consequences of the dilution of regular season golf, now means more than ever before. Surely shouldering the dynamic load of an entire sport has eroded his emotions in ways he might not even be able to recognize right now. "You're going to encounter things at a U.S. Open, whether they be lies or stuff like that, that you just don't really encounter any other week," said McIlroy of the 5th hole. After his round, he called out the players in front of his group for being slow and explained why he was so frustrated. His game gives his words gravity, and gravity rules the world. Though he's not exempt from criticism for club tossing and sand excavation projects, it's also a bit of a delight to see somebody who at times has seemed as if was sleepwalking at major championships clear-eyes and completely engaged. Rory then birdied No. 7 and No. 8 to drive his scored to 4 under before a frustrating bogey at the last led to a club toss and some words that NBC wouldn't be able to air even if desired. "Almost to remind yourself sometimes how much it means to you as well." On Thursday, in the first round of the 122nd U.S. Open, he reminded everyone why his words carry such weight. The four-time major winner is in an eight-year drought when it comes to winning big ones, but McIlroy entered the week playing as well as he's played in years.

U.S. Open: Rory McIlroy starts strong in major title bid (Los Angeles Times)

Rory McIlroy, a vocal opponent of the Saudi-financed LIV Golf league, put in a solid effort during the first round of the U.S. Open.

He couldn’t save par on that one and had to accept a 67 — not a bad start, and no apologies for his few outbursts of emotion. For McIlroy, it was his second straight major — and third time in his last four U.S. Opens — he opened with a score par. He hit that into another bunker, and then twice slammed the club into the sand out of frustration. Collin Morikawa, trying to win a major for the third straight year, thought he might be able to take it deep — at least by U.S. Open standards — when he birdied the ninth hole to reach 3 under. McIlroy has become a leading voice on the PGA Tour over the last few years, particularly with his rebuke of the Saudi-funded series that is disrupting golf. Even with a good start, and coming off a victory last week in the Canadian Open, it doesn’t figure to be easy.

2022 U.S. Open leaderboard breakdown: Adam Hadwin leads as ... (CBSSports.com)

T42. Joaquin Niemann, Sam Burns, Bryson DeChambeau, Corey Conners and eight others (+1): After an eagle on the par-5 eighth, it appeared that Niemann would threaten the first page of the leaderboard as he stood at 2 under for the day. It felt as if he was all over the place Thursday as he carded four birdies to offset four bogeys. In his five U.S. Open appearances, he has five top-10 finishes; however, he has yet to truly contend as his average deficit entering the final round has been 5.4 strokes. While Young was in a similar spot as Spieth from a statistical standpoint, Cantlay was not as his iron play was simply dreadful. Having been in the final pairing at the 2022 PGA Championship, it is possible the heartache from Southern Hills leads to jubilation in Brookline. He has been knocking on the door for what seems like an eternity and on paper the 2022 version of Fitzpatrick is different. He will need this area of the bag to rebound as he has had some trouble backing up one great round with another. Leading the field in strokes gained tee to green, there is still room for improvement as the 34-year-old ranked 60th in strokes gained putting in Round 1. The Canadian is in the midst of a sneaky strong season, which at one point included three consecutive top-10 finishes but has yet to taste contention in a major championship. He continued his fine play Thursday at The Country Club, but it was not without some head scratching moments. Defending champion Jon Rahm, PGA Championship winner Justin Thomas and two-time major title-holder Collin Morikawa are all only three strokes back at 1 under, and they will look to ascend up the leaderboard in Friday's second round. Dropping a shot late in his round, McIlroy would later be matched by by Joel Dahmen, MJ Daffue and a pair of European counterparts at 3 under.

Phil Mickelson in jeopardy of missing cut at U.S. Open after carding ... (ESPN)

Phil Mickelson struggled in the first round of the U.S. Open, carding an 8-over 78. He's tied for 144th place.

Mickelson was playing in the U.S. Open after being indefinitely suspended by PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan a week ago. Mickelson has been runner-up at the U.S. Open a record six times. "I really enjoyed the test; I think it's just a spectacular golf course," Mickelson told reporters in the players' parking lot after the round. But then Mickelson yanked his tee shot into the thick rough on the right side on No. 12, needed two shots to get back to the fairway and carded a double-bogey 6 to drop to 7 over. Mickelson was one of 17 tour players who competed in the inaugural LIV Golf Invitational Series event in London without a conflicting-event release. Playing for the first time in the U.S. since missing the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open in late January, Mickelson had bogeys on three of the first five holes and then four-putted from 12 feet for a double bogey on the par-3 sixth.

U.S. Open 2022: The Phil Mickelson haters were few but they were ... (GolfDigest.com)

Phil Mickelson would qualify as controversial in every conceivable way, even before he took on the PGA Tour and defected to the Saudi-backed LIV Golf series.

Then, he'll get a week off before heading to Pumpkin Ridge in Portland for the first U.S.-based LIV event at the end of the month. Curry's articulate thoughts on the Phil-to-LIV matter were quite the juxaposition with the next catcaller, who was positioned in one of the hospitality tents off 14 fairway and was clearly overserved. "The tour that was so incredibly good to him for 20-plus years, and he's completely tainted his legacy. His final score of eight-over 78 has him positioned in a tie for 144th, 12 shots off the lead of Adam Hadwin and just five shots shy of dead last. The tour would have taken care of him if he was really in that dire need." Phil's the one who is trying to take down the PGA Tour." "I thought he'd get booed out of the place, to be honest with you." Then, somewhat stunningly, came a real, live "boooo" in Mickelson's direction as he strolled to the par-3 sixth tee. Then again, this was the man's 52nd birthday, and this is the U.S. Open, which has caused him the most pain over the course of his three-decade career. Once they quieted, boo-er No. 2 let Mickelson know he was "dead to him." For the last 20 years and then some, he has been among the most beloved players in the sport. His Kiawah like pre-shot process was yielding Centurion-like results, but the Bostonians still opted for a positive-vibes-only approach.

U.S. Open 2022: Unlikely leaders, golf ball bandits, and six other ... (GolfDigest.com)

Here are the things that caught our eye—and caught us off guard—during the first round of the 2022 U.S. Open.

I recognized the two kids that were running the opposite way with a smile on their face," Rahm said laughing. Still, this is a guy who has lost to a total of four players over his past four U.S. Opens. And yet he got beaten by more than half the field on Thursday. Despite the bizarre situation, Rahm responded by making birdie to shoot 69 and put himself in great shape to defend his title. Oosthuizen, who finished T-2, solo second and T-3 in the final three majors of 2021, withdrew at this year’s Masters before finishing T-60 at the PGA, and now he’ll need a miracle to make the cut after opening with 77. You could say that the 39-year-old South African isn't LIVing at the top of major leaderboards anymore. The winner of the 2015 Memorial, Lingmerth has fallen to No. 592 in the Official World Golf Ranking. But he certainly didn’t play like that during a bogey-free 67. And Rahm thinks he knows who the culprits are. Look, the guy’s a PGA Tour winner and he finished T-9 at the Players Championship earlier this year. And that came 11 years ago at Congressional. But there he was on Thursday going out in a scorching four-under-par 31 and finishing at that number to take a one-stroke lead after 18 holes. Remember when this guy was seemingly in the hunt at every major last year? The six-time major champ struggled from start to finish shooting an eight-over-par 78 that included a four-putt from 16 feet on No. 6. BROOKLINE, Mass. — Day 1 at the U.S. Open is in the books, and there were plenty of things that left us scratching our heads.

2022 U.S. Open scores, takeaways: Justin Thomas in familiar ... (CBSSports.com)

Also, might we be headed to a PGA Tour vs. LIV Golf showdown this weekend?

Homa has been adamant about how much he's learned about not having to be perfect at major championships, and it's clear from his play at the last few that it's leading to better play on the golf course. The 15 golfers that are playing in the rival league to the PGA Tour shot 53 over with only D.J. and U.S. Amateur champion James Piot under par. 9. Max Homa's ball-striking: The best iron player in the field on Thursday was Homa, who gained over four strokes on approach shots and only got a 1-under 69 out of it. Fitzpatrick is having the best statistical season of his life, and while a bookend win at Brookline would be almost too on the nose, it would also be a terrific story. The other subplot here is that D.J. has not spoken publicly at a non-LIV event, but if he leads or is near the top on Friday and beyond, he's going to get a lot of questions about how much he's changed the landscape of his sport. A showdown between D.J. and either Rory or J.T. -- both firmly entrenched on the PGA Tour side -- is almost too delicious to consider this early in the week. "I played a lot of golf last week and a lot of holes to try to be able to trust it. 3. Callum Tarren oddity: One extremely strange part about Thursday is that Tarren, T2 after 18 holes, was over par for 12 of his first 15 holes and only under par for the last three of the day when he went birdie-eagle-par to close. Second, Morikawa has said all week he's unable to hit a fade at the moment, which over the last three years has been the most reliable shot in all of golf. And his quote about how he was going to spend his Thursday night sitting on the lead was even better: "I'm going to call him a newly best friend, Ben Rector; he is a musician. At the PGA in May, he was the horse who stayed in the peloton the entire way before closing like the thoroughbred he's proved himself to be. On Sunday, we might be talking about Thomas being the first golfer in the last seven years (Jordan Spieth in 2015) to win back to back major championships.

Rory McIlroy patiently overcomes anger, obstacles to put himself in ... (USA TODAY)

Rory McIlroy posted a 3-under-par 67 in the first round Thursday at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts, to put himself in contention.

“You feel like you’re right in the tournament from the start of the week, which is nice,” McIlroy said about getting off to a good start in a major. And McIlroy could become the first in the game’s history to win a PGA Tour event the week before winning the U.S. Open. “I’m going into tomorrow with the mindset of let’s keep it going, rather than where is the cut line or whatever, if you don’t get off to a great start those thoughts start to creep in. Joining McIlroy at 67 WERE Callum Tarren, Joel Dahmen, David Lingmerth and MJ Daufee. The week didn’t start well for Tarren as his clubs didn’t arrive with him from Toronto. It was the second time at a U.S. Open his clubs weren’t with him after a flight. In the 2019 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach, he didn’t get his clubs until the day before the tournament started. Just basically did everything that you need to do at a U.S. Open.” Adam Hadwin was atop the leaderboard for most of his afternoon round. But McIlroy collected himself and made a 13-footer for par to keep momentum on his side. Even though I’m standing up here slightly frustrated that I bogeyed the last, it’s a great start to the tournament. So I was sort of cursing the USGA. “The thickest rough on the course is around the edges of the bunkers. And then he swatted the ball 10 yards into another bunker and took some mighty whacks at the sand in frustration.

Five holes in with no wind, defending champion Jon Rahm had himself a moment when, he said, “I was thinking, ‘We’re going to blow the roof off this place.’ ” Reigning British Open champion Collin Morikawa, a two-time major winner at 25, called it “gettable,” a word shelved if not condemned at most U.S. Opens. Both shot 1-under 69s. “This has been a year in the making, really,” Hadwin said. “It’s been eight years since I won a major, and I just want to get my hands on one again.” I wasn’t all-American. I wasn’t the best. But I’m pretty stubborn, and I’m not one to give up.” There have been some tough days, not going to lie, and you kind of start asking yourself those questions. He took his drop and left himself a 12-foot birdie putt to finish with a 69. “But I’ll take the 4 and run any day of the week.” But he got up and down from the sand, making a 13-footer to save par. “Even though I’m standing up here slightly frustrated that I bogeyed the last, it’s a great start to the tournament,” he said. Johnson shot 68 to sit in a seven-way tie for seventh after 18 holes. In his attempt to win a major for the third straight year, Collin Morikawa made the turn at 3 under but didn’t make another birdie. He missed the ninth green -- his 18th hole -- and settled for his only bogey of the round. Defending U.S. Open champion John Rahm also salvaged a 69 after driving wide left on the last two holes. But the best thing he can do for the legacy circuit is to keep winning. The other was four-time major winner Rory McIlroy, who slammed and tossed aside his clubs during the round but also made enough shots with them to remain just one stroke off the lead. McIlroy was tied for second with Callum Tarren, David Lingmerth, Joel Dahmen and MJ Daffue.

2022 U.S. Open - Sights, sounds and best moments from the second ... (ESPN)

The opening round had Phil drama, club tosses and turkeys. What's ahead during the second round of the U.S. Open? We've got it covered.

He followed that with a bogey at the 11th and another at the 14th. Dustin Johnson (2 under) and James Piot (1 under) were the only ones among the group to break 70. Without a low score Friday, he is in danger of missing the cut. Two years ago, he made $5,750 on the All Pro Tour. He is also a volunteer assistant coach at Houston. But after making the turn at 6-under on Friday, MJ Daffue (pronounced "Duffey") has a lead over the likes of Rory McIlroy, Matt Fitzpatrick and three others. Daffue, 33, was born in South Africa and played at Lamar University in Beaumont, Texas. He has already earned his PGA Tour card for 2022-23 through his good play on the Korn Ferry Tour, where he is fourth in the The 25. He qualified for his first major championship by sharing medalist honors at a qualifier in Springfield, Ohio, and is making the most of it so far. The 15 LIV players put up a cumulative total Thursday of 53 over. The current leader of the 122nd U.S. Open has 822 (and counting) followers on Twitter as of Friday morning. Alan Shipnuck answers your questions about all things U.S. Open including Rory McIlroy's ego, The Country's Club's easy Day 1 and who may be next to leave ...

So Hagestad, even though he’s very much embedded on the cocktail circuit, and a place like The Country Club barely meets his standard as far as exclusivity, and he’s not exactly a man of the people, I think the USGA would be much more comfortable if he were to win because he in fact is still an amateur, unlike the U.S. Amateur champion. I mean, it’s from a different era, it’s from a different century. So he’s turned pro, he’s gone over to the Saudis, but he’s playing as the U.S. Amateur champ. I mean, the term Massholes exists for a reason, so bring it. Rory always says and does the right things, he exudes class, so when he has a few slip-ups that show his passion, we almost enjoy that. He has better credentials than some of the guys who are already in the Hall, but peaking in your late 20s and then just disappearing … it’s a tough look. I love a wild, wooly links course like you get at the Open Championship, but The Country Club is so pleasing to the eye. I love the quirkiness, the weirdness, the blindness. He was the phenom, he was lost in the wilderness, now he’s the moral compass of golf. Yeah, I think there’s going to be this slow drip leading to the event in Oregon two weeks from now. The twisty fairways and the way the dark green rough blends into the golden heather, and the movement of the greens and the raggedy bunkers … this is golf heaven. I love Twitter. I love the Internet. You people complete me.

And put that shot at the top of his bio. Unfortunately, Daffue left his next chip in the rough and then wound up missing a six-footer for par. We've seen similar shots from Phil and others through the years, but what sets this one apart was the degree of difficulty, in large part because a large tree poking through the crowded area that made Daffue keep his 3-wood down.

Phil Mickelson cards 3-over 73 Friday but misses U.S. Open cut at ... (ESPN)

After struggling during first-round play on Thursday, Phil Mickelson played better Friday, carding a 3-over-73, but it wasn't enough to make the cut at The ...

He immediately raised his left arm and yelled, "Way left!" The man was holding an ice bag on his head. He had a 3-putt bogey on the par-4 13th. The man was helped by USGA officials, and Mickelson came over and shook his hand. Mickelson's total of 11 over through 36 holes tied for fifth worst in a major championship during his career. He carded a 3-over 73, dropping his total for 36 holes to 11 over.

U.S. Open cut line 2022: Projected cut, rules, updates for Friday's ... (Sporting News)

Phil Mickelson has created notable storylines at the 2022 U.S. Open. Now, he is unlikely to survive the cut.

The most golfers ever to make the U.S. Open cut is 108 in 1996. The cut will be for the top 60 scores (including ties), meaning that a minimum of 60 golfers will advance and more will likely make the cut. At least 60 of those 156 golfers will make the cut. The line will move throughout the second round with the 60th-place player. Jordan Spieth, Patrick Cantlay, Shane Lowry, Tony Finau and Brooks Koepka are all flirting with the cut line as well. Missing the cut would turn this major tournament into a major disappointment for Mickelson, who is playing in just his second event since his controversial comments about the tour.

Phil Mickelson's first major after LIV defection ends badly (The Washington Post)

After years spent criticizing the PGA Tour's control of players' media rights, his support of what became known as LIV Golf — and his willingness to downplay ...

As a past winner of the Masters and the PGA Championship, Mickelson has a lifetime pass to those tournaments — assuming Augusta National and the PGA of America do not change their rules — and he gets free entry into the British Open as a past champion until the age of 60. His results on the regular PGA Tour weren’t much better, and he finished tied for 33rd out of 48 at the first no-cut LIV tournament. Mickelson’s second round on Friday was better than his first on Thursday — when he bogeyed three of his first five holes, double-bogeyed the sixth and finished at 8-over 78 — but it wasn’t nearly enough to get him to the weekend. Nicklaus also won the British Open three times, while the U.S. Open remains the only major to elude Mickelson. And in his eight U.S. Opens since his most recent runner-up in 2013, Mickelson has no finish better than a tie for 28th, with three missed cuts. When he emerged earlier this month for LIV’s inaugural event outside London, he was bearded and dressed in black, a look he carried to the Country Club this week. Considering his unfortunate history at the one major he’s never won, Mickelson has long been the center of attention at the U.S. Open, but this year’s spotlight was shaded differently.

US Open updates: Scheffler shoots 67, ties for lead (The Washington Post)

Masters champion and top-ranked Scottie Scheffler shot 3-under 67 to join Rory McIlroy and four others in the lead at the U.S. Open.

___ It doesn’t seem that way to MJ Daffue (pronounced “Duffy”). He already has three birdies through five holes and was leading at 5-under par in the early going. ___ It put him at 6-under par, three shots ahead of Rory McIlroy and a group of three others who play Friday afternoon. ___ He is 3 over for the day and 11 over for the tournament. ___ But he duffed the chip shot and made a bogey 6 anyway. M.J. Daffue had a perfect lie. ___ Then Koepka knocked in a 14-foot putt. ___

2022 U.S. Open missed cuts: Phil Mickelson, Cameron Smith among ... (CBSSports.com)

While big names are contending at the U.S. Open, there are a number of top players who won't be around for the weekend.

- Billy Horschel: +4 - Sergio Garcia: +4 Sometimes, at an event like the U.S. Open, that is all it takes for disaster to strike. A player who experienced a similar drop from near certainty was Finau, who opened with a 3-over 73 on Thursday. Even par on his day through his first 16 holes, Finau arrived at the accessible par-5 eighth hoping to add some breathing space between him and the cut line. Carding bogeys on nine of his next 11 holes, the young Norwegian's name plummeted down the leaderboard, and he ultimately finished with a 36-hole total of 7-over 147. Wish I had played better."

2022 U.S. Open leaderboard breakdown: Collin Morikawa, Jon ... (CBSSports.com)

While defending champion Jon Rahm and four-time major winner Rory McIlroy are firmly in contention sitting just one stroke off the lead, it is the name at the ...

You have to give them credit, the two big surprises currently in a tie for first at 4 under look extremely comfortable. The short game continues to impress for the two-time major champion. Morikawa fired a 4-under 66 for the low round of the day and commands the solo lead at 5 under as of now. A tremendous approach shot into his final hole was good enough to push Hayden Buckley into a share of the lead. Joel Dahmen has reached 5 under and has tied Collin Morikawa at the top. T16. Xander Schauffele, Will Zalatoris, Davis Riley and four others (-1): His U.S. Open resume is fantastic on paper, but this presents the best opportunity to date for Schauffele. In his five prior top-10 finishes, he had yet to truly contend; however, with 36 holes remaining, he is only four strokes off the pace. Only four men have beaten him in his last four U.S. Open appearances and he has his work cut out for him if he doesn't want to add substantially to that total. T13. Sam Burns, Matt Fitzpatrick, Adam Hadwin and Beau Hossler (-2): Burns was one of three players to sign for a 67 in the morning wave, and the next logical step in his career progression is weekend contention in a major championship. T8. Scottie Scheffler, Nick Hardy, Matthew NeSmith, Patrick Rodgers and Brian Harman (-3): Carrying the momentum of his birdie-birdie finish from Thursday, Scheffler sure looked like the world No. 1 on Friday. While it did not begin without a hitch, the Texan put together the best approach performance of his career from a strokes gained perspective. T3. Jon Rahm, Rory McIlroy, Aaron Wise, Hayden Buckley and Beau Hossler (-4): Rahm played alongside Morikawa the first two days and was probably overshadowed by him. He had lost strokes with his putter in every start since the Masters, and so far this week at The Country Club, he has gained more than three strokes with the flat stick. Make no mistake, though: Morikawa is in for a battle over the final 36 holes with names like McIlroy, Rahm and world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler all within shouting distance.

A Weird, Wild and Entirely Typical Day at the U.S. Open (The New York Times)

It was a topsy-turvy second round on a vexing golf course as famed and anonymous players jockeyed up and down the leaderboard and turkeys paid a visit.

But he closed with a flourish, a birdie on the par-5 eighth hole to finish with four-under-par 66. Jon Rahm, the U.S. Open defending champion, began his round at one under par like Morikawa and teed off on the 10th hole. He eagled the short par-5 14th and deftly putted as the sun emerged on Friday afternoon and subtly dried out the fast, undulating greens. Smiling, Scheffler, who shot even par 70 on Thursday, reset his focus and knocked the ball in the hole. Also not eligible for the final weekend rounds will be Viktor Hovland and Tommy Fleetwood. But he said he has regained his confidence with more work out of competition. (He started his round on the 10th hole.) Morikawa, winner of the 2020 P.G.A. Championship, first took the second-round lead with a fourth birdie on the first hole before registering his first bogey on the fourth hole. Morikawa shot a four-under-par 66 on Friday to move to five under par for the tournament. He did not do it from the hospitality tent balcony where Daffue found his golf ball, but his tee shot bounded into the thick rough 40 yards right of the hole. Scheffler, who won this year’s Masters Tournament and three other 2022 PGA Tour events, jump-started his round by pitching in for an eagle on the 14th hole. But Buckley rallied to shoot four under in his final seven holes. Daffue could have been speaking for the entire field.
