New York State Electric & Gas and Rochester Gas and Electric issued a statement saying they are monitoring weather forecasts and have crews and equipment on standby in the event of downed power lines and power outages. The National Weather Service in Buffalo already has issued a heat advisory. Update: The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch through 11 p.m. for counties in New York state including Monroe, Ontario, Livingston and Wayne.

That was at 6:20 p.m. The NWS also issued severe thunderstorm warnings for Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties, which expired at 5:45 p.m. The NWS said ping pong ball-sized hail and 60-mile-per-hour wind gusts were possible.

The National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for 36 upstate counties, including each of the GLOW counties, until 11 tonight.

This yields a very real risk of damaging wind, large hail, and even a tornado with supercellular thunderstorm development, the Weather Service said. Eventually, the cold front will move eastward across the area as well. Much cooler conditions will return for the weekend, the Weather Service said. With surface temperatures largely in the mid 80s to lower 90s across the Rochester metro and western Finger Lakes region, the resulting heat index values are 90 to more than 100 degrees in a few spots, the Weather Service said. Sultry conditions reside within the warm sector with widespread dewpoints in the mid-70s – “yes, you read that correctly...mid 70s!” the Weather Service said in a forecast discussion. The main hazards will be damaging winds and large hail, the Weather Service said.
