Morris Rescues USMNT With Late Equalizer on Wild Nations ... (Sports Illustrated)

Jordan Morris's equalizer seconds into stoppage time salvaged a 1–1 draw in a Concacaf Nations League group match vs. El Salvador in which both sides wound up ...

Musah was at the center of the action again, running a give-and-go with Ferreira and surging in behind El Salvador’s last line of defense. Morris, in off the bench, got his head to service from another sub, Luca de la Torre, and he headed in the equalizer to make it 1–1. First, he got to a ball down the right sideline before it could go out, charged forward and looked to play Brenden Aaronson in on goal only to have a last-ditch block put the ball out for the corner. The U.S. was reduced to 10 men with just over 20 minutes to go. Perhaps he was anticipating bend on the ball, or perhaps he thought right back Reggie Cannon had the block covered, but instead, Larín’s shot pierced the back of the net to make it 1–0 to the hosts. It fell at the doorstep, but Bonilla wasn’t able to connect on his volley, perhaps expecting a bounce that never came, and Cameron Carter-Vickers ultimately cleared the danger. Pulisic’s attempt was easily cleared, but he regained possession, impressively stayed in play after getting to the end line and cutting a ball back, which Weah wound up wildly volleying wide of the mark from 20 yards. Wright stepped in for Jesús Ferreira, whose four-goal game against Grenada helped his individual case and led the U.S. to its first three points in the secondary Concacaf competition. Gregg Berhalter’s side returned to the Cuscátlan, where it played to a 0–0 draw last September, for the game that capped the U.S.’s two-week, four-match gathering and whose chief purposes were building more toward the fall in Qatar and collecting more data points on particular players, whose roles going forward are still to be decided. On that set piece, Wright got his head to Tyler Adams’ service, keeping it alive for Yunus Musah, whose blast was blocked before it could hit the target. The U.S. men’s national team closed its penultimate camp before the World Cup at the place where its qualifying campaign for Qatar 2022 began. USMNT equalizes late for a 1-1 draw amid sloppy conditions in El ... (The Washington Post)

Jordan Morris's header early in stoppage time let the Americans finish this string of four matches undefeated in the next-to-last camp before the World Cup.

“Although we didn’t get the win, it’s a good takeaway and a good end to the June camp. ... Pulisic is scheduled to participate in FIFA’s 2026 World Cup venue announcement Thursday in New York, people with knowledge of the plans said. “I just tried to make a run in the box and he put a perfect ball in the box,” Morris said. And it really, really brought the guys together in a good way.” We got used to it pretty quickly, and we had to figure it out or else we wouldn’t have gotten that final goal.” “That’s certainly going to be a challenge for this group,” he said. Daily rain had left the field mushy and heavy. The sides settled for a 0-0 draw. He rested several regulars against Grenada, ranked No. 170 in the world, but recalled several to face El Salvador. During that nine-day affair in Europe, they will play friendlies against two World Cup teams from the Asian confederation. And unlike Tuesday, when they scored late to tie El Salvador, 1-1, at Estadio Cuscatlán, the stakes will rank considerably higher. The shoes are a mess.

He opened up El Salvador's defense with dynamic passing and his trademark late runs into the box were a constant threat. Musah was the standout for the USMNT on the night. He was fouled almost constantly but still managed to create several of the United States' best looks, and grew more dangerous as the match went on. It wasn't pretty, but it was a resilient point. He improved going forward as the game went on, but didn't have a significant impact. The Nottingham Forrest netminder was finally given a chance to start.

A win tonight is a must for El Salvador though, and the Central Americans will be taking on an American squad that will be looking to make up for the lackluster showing they posted the last time they visited San Salvador last September in the World Cup qualifying opener. Cameron Carter-Vicker is starting in Zimmerman’s place and is coming off an impressive performance against Grenada. El Salvador will present a more difficult challenge for the Celtic centerback, but it will give him a chance to strengthen his case for a place on the USMNT World Cup squad. The U.S. men’s national team takes on El Salvador in San Salvador tonight with a chance to take charge of their Concacaf Nations League group and move a step toward defending their title (10 p.m., FS1).

Jordan Morris goal saves USMNT from CONCACAF Nations League ... (The Tennessean)

Jordan Morris scored in the 91st minute to help the U.S. men's national team avoid embarrassing defeat on shoddy field at El Salvador.

The U.S. had gone one goal down in the 35th minute when Salvadorian left back Alexander Larin scored with a hopeful strike from 25 yards out. Morris headed in midfielder Luca de la Torre's cross from the left wing, leaping above the cluster inside the penalty box to score his first international goal since November 2019 in the Nations League against Cuba. USMNT's Memorable, Sloppy End to June Camp Gives Berhalter ... (Sports Illustrated)

They had the better of the play and the better chances. Inevitably, the Concacaf Nations League group-stage match, which ended 1-1, was choppy, antagonistic and ...

“It just wasn't his night tonight, and you know it doesn't rule him out for anything in the future. Starting for the national team for the first time in a year and facing an uncertain club future as the backup at promoted Nottingham Forest, Horvath probably needed to make a statement in San Salvador. Larín’s shot was the only one La Selecta put on target, and it was the only goal the U.S. yielded in its four games this month. If there was a man of the match, we’d probably give it to him because of his performance.” Striker Haji Wright earned his first U.S. start after netting a penalty in the window-opening win over Morocco, but he was mostly quiet as the Americans tried to solve for the conditions. Concacaf has a habit of turning the benign into the eventful, and the casual into the contentious. They had the better of the play and the better chances. It held firm after Arriola’s ejection for a high tackle (his suspension won’t apply at the World Cup and is instead enforced when the Nations League resumes) and then forced a red card to El Salvador, which was reduced to 10 men when Yunus Musah was brought down from behind. Although there probably was nothing about the match that will echo in Qatar, where the conditions, setting, opponent and style will be so different, the mud-caked Americans’ ability to extract a point from that quagmire said something significant about their maturity and focus. Horvath’s misplay, along with a couple outstanding saves by counterpart Mario González, prevented them from winning in Latin America for just the second time under Berhalter. The U.S. (1-0-1 in Nations League) needed a victory to seal a place in the 2023 Gold Cup. It’ll now have to wait until after the World Cup, in March, to do so when it meets El Salvador (1-0-2) and Grenada (0-2-1) again. Ethan Horvath seemed stuck in the mud as an Alexander Larín shot from a tight angle surprised the U.S. goalkeeper in the first half. That September night in San Salvador, the U.S. was subjected to a raucous and deafening crowd that filled Central America’s largest stadium (despite pandemic limitations). There were fireworks during play, projectiles, and a motivated and energetic opponent. In short, the youthful visitors experienced a lot of what Concacaf has to offer.

USMNT showed mentality needed for World Cup to salvage draw on ... (ESPN)

The United States could have stayed stuck in the mud as it fell behind to El Salvador, but the way it responded is a promising sign for Qatar.

"Although we didn't get the win, I think it's a good takeaway and a good end to the June camp. If there was a man of the match, we'd probably give it to him." If there's a takeaway for what Tuesday's game means for the World Cup, it must be about the team's mentality. It was an unlucky night for him tonight, for sure." "It doesn't rule him out for anything in the future. It's not nice for the group. For Wright, the game was supposed to be his big audition. It's not nice for the player. "We saw the conditions, saw how it was gradually getting worse and knew at game time it wasn't going to be good," USMNT coach Gregg Berhalter said. "We thought after the warm-up that it would best suit us to play long," midfielder Tyler Adams said. It wasn't exactly an ideal scenario for a team fully focused on preparing for a tournament in Qatar, where the annual average precipitation is roughly 3 inches. Even light jogging left mud tracks in the previously undisturbed grass, and that was before the rain really started to come down.
