Jan. 6 hearings: Day 2 live updates and analysis (MSNBC)

The House Jan. 6 select committee's second public hearing on its investigation into the Capitol riot begins Monday. President Donald Trump and the "big lie" ...

"Trump has become a prisoner of his own ego," the board wrote. Today, the committee is expected to focus on one aspect of Trump’s possible criminal culpability, likely by highlighting that he was told there was no fraud in the election and therefore knew he was spreading misinformation. Stirewalt’s former network didn’t even cover the first night of hearings, and now that network, its operations and the pressure exerted on it by Team Trump will take center stage during today’s hearing. He's the first person running for elected office in a major state or federal race to be charged in connection with the Jan. 6 riot. Of course, the committee is on a fact-finding mission to inform its legislative function — and not in a position to enforce criminal laws. As I expected, the committee is ready to use video clips from Stepien's deposition in lieu of his live testimony. We’ll be shown more videos from the hundreds of hours of depositions that the committee has taken, demonstrating that Trump’s team knew he lost. However, its members know the Justice Department is watching and previously have used language that seems to track the elements of certain federal crimes, such as conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding. And that’s despite a right-wing disinformation campaign to downplay and spread disinformation about the hearing. If Fox News and other right-wing media weren’t bent on further polarizing the country around Jan. 6, the numbers for the hearings likely would have been higher. The first hearing of the Jan. 6 committee last week garnered some big numbers — at least 20 million viewers. Nonetheless, it’s the kind of colorful detail that helps underscore how Trump’s inner circle was an utter mess and contemptuous of propriety on election night.

Opinion | Will the Jan. 6 Hearings Lead to a Trump Indictment? (The New York Times)

If it does not, the hearings will have been “a cruel tease,” one reader opines. Also: Gender terms; postpartum care; gun maker liability; moral injury.

This means greater funding and collaborative efforts across disciplines to get the essential help for many who continue to suffer from it. What we need is in-home postpartum care for all mothers and babies to get off to a good start and the time, with extended, paid maternity leave, to do it. There is no “village” to help American women care for their newborns. The subheadline, “It takes a village to care for a newborn,” is ironic. We give no recognition to moms for the accomplishment of giving birth, becoming mothers and caring for their helpless newborns. Erasing that identity in the name of equality or fairness does just the opposite. That said, most of the world population, including me, identifies as male or female, woman or man. Why are so many people unable or unwilling to see the monster for what he is? I am a liberal, but I find the use of phrases such as “pregnant people” a stretch too far. “I could stand in the middle of Fifth Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn’t lose any voters.” Donald Trump was completely serious when he uttered these words. It would end the political distractions and severely embarrass Mr. Trump. And a conviction at trial is not a slam dunk. But nah, we’re not going to prosecute him.

What's the TV schedule for the next Jan. 6 committee hearings? (Los Angeles Times)

The committee is expected to reveal evidence of President Trump's plan to overturn the 2020 presidential election.

At the fifth hearing, the committee plans to spotlight a pressure campaign carried out by Trump’s allies to get state legislators and election officials to change the results of the vote, Cheney said. A judge who helped Pence resist Trump’s demands is expected to testify. A Capitol Police officer also provided vivid details of her bloody battle against insurrectionists. What to expect: The third hearing is expected to show how Trump pressured the Justice Department to claim there had been rampant fraud in the election, as well as his attempt to install an attorney general who would help him get that done. Several Republican lawmakers were involved in Trump’s effort. And all of it will be aired live.
