Jiri Prochazka proves 'warrior' worth with gutsy UFC 275 title victory (New York Post)

Jiri Prochazka snatched a win from Glover Teixeira on Saturday, claiming his light heavyweight championship in the process with a fifth-round submission ...

Prochazka weathered the storm, but with a minute remaining still seemed just 60 seconds or less from his first loss in 6 ½ years. Unbeknownst to the combatants, Teixeira was in the driver’s seat on the scorecards entering the final five minutes. “From my side, it was [a] horrible fight, [a] horrible performance,” Prochazka later told reporters. But Prochazka survived and thrived, dishing out pain of his own in a round that reasonably could have been scored either way. Fighting with urgency in the third of five frames, Prochazka carved up the champion whom has long hailed from Danbury, Conn., since immigrating as a young man. For 24 minutes, 32 seconds, Prochazka and Teixeira pushed one another to the brink.

Prochazka never even got his legs around Teixeira -- in grappling terms, he never got his hooks in -- during the opportune, unorthodox choke. Prochazka landed some punches from the top, but Teixeira somehow swept and took Prochazka's back before the end of the round. Prochazka took that momentum into the second round and landed some big punches, a knee and ground-and-pound with Teixeira on the mat. Back on the feet, both men landed hard shots, with Teixeira getting the better of things. But back on the feet, Teixeira caught Prochazka pressuring forward wildly with a left hook that dropped him. "He was hitting me with body shots that took my gas away," Teixeira said. Teixeira looked early like he would run over Prochazka with his superior wrestling and grappling. Judge Michael Bell had it 38-38 going into the fifth round, judge Ben Cartlidge had Teixeira up 39-37, and Clemens Warner had Teixeira ahead 38-37. Coming into the fight, ESPN had Teixeira ranked No. 8 on its list of the best pound-for-pound MMA fighters in the world. Prochazka is the first male fighter to win an undisputed UFC title within his first three fights since Brock Lesnar in 2008, according to ESPN Stats & Information. "It was a true war," Prochazka said. Teixeira gave it all back and then some.

UFC 275 fight fallout: Next options for Jiri Prochazka, Glover Teixeira ... (CBSSports.com)

UFC may want to pull the trigger on Prochazka vs. Teixeira 2 before it is too late.

Either way, the door is open for Shevchenko. The women's flyweight champion has expressed her desire to fight for the bantamweight belt by year's end. This might just be the frontrunner for Fight of the Year but they may not have two years to run it back as Zhang and Jededrzejczyk did. It may not have been an awe-inspiring, dominant launching pad to a super-fight, but the reality is that women's flyweight is hurting for fresh contenders. UFC 275 may not have been the most marketable pay-per-view of the year, but it was a powder keg of action.

Not only did he accomplish that goal, but he secured a TKO in the first round after surviving an early scare courtesy of Emeev’s slick submission attempt. Jedrzejczyk’s run as a dominant UFC strawweight champion was instrumental in helping the women’s side of the sport flourish, and the Polish fighter absolutely deserves all the praise she’s getting right now for her body of work. The Brazilian pushed “Bullet,” but the more I reflect and view the fight back, the more I convince myself that we’ve been so accustomed to seeing Shevchenko hardly break a sweat that the mere sight of her in bad spots makes us think the situation was worse than it was. Or in the case of Jedrzejczyk, she went out face down after getting rocked with a highlight-reel shot. If Teixeira had kept punching in the moment, it’s reasonable to believe he’d still have the belt in his possession, but that’s the cruel element of this sport and also a reason why we love it so much. But I sit here the day after the fight feeling quite unbothered that Shevchenko is still champ. MMA fights are not scored on what-ifs, though, and the judges have to score what’s legitimately happening. In the span of just three UFC fights, Prochazka has firmly established himself as one of the most exciting fighters on the roster. It was an outstanding finish to an instant classic fight, and Prochazka (29-3-1 MMA, 3-0 UFC) showed his mettle by overcoming some true adversity to net the second latest title-fight stoppage in UFC history. The same potentially could be said if Santos didn’t catch an accidental head butt that broke her orbital bone. This result is going to be nightmare fuel for the Brazilian. He went through hell against Glover Teixeira and somehow found a way to win by securing a rear-naked choke with just 28 seconds left in Round 5.

Former Women's UFC Champion Looks 'Shredded' (Heavy.com)

A former UFC champion is showing off her bulging muscles in a photo shared from an award ceremony.

“I haven’t heard her talk about boxing since her last pro fight,” Winkeljohn told ESPN. “In fact, I even think there were a couple fights left in her boxing career where she was done with it. I had already won titles at 140, 147 and 154 pounds. I had already won a title at 140. “Holly Holm turned her boxing hall of fame speech into the gun show,” someone else tweeted. “Definitely knows where they keep the weights,” a fan tweeted. “Damn she’s shredded,” a fan tweeted.

One of the most underrated fighters in the Welterweight division, Matthews picked up a huge win over Andre Fialho, knocking him out in the very first round to put him back in the win column following a tough loss to Sean Brady, With the win, Matthews improves 7-2 over his last nine fights inside the Octagon but still finds himself on the outside of the Top 15 looking in. As for Maddalena, who was also victorious on the main card by knocking Ramazan Emeev in the very first round, so why not pit them up against one another? Nevertheless, Zhang, the former title holder, will get a shot at “Cookie Monster” next, leaving the rightful owner of the title fight, Marina Rodriguez (No. 3), out in the cold for the time being. It was an interesting decision given the fact that Weili was coming off two straight championship losses, and Jedrzejczyk was coming off a loss to Weili and had looked less than stellar over the last four years. Prior to the title fight between Teixeira and Prochazka, Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) president, Dana White, revealed that the upcoming bout between Anthony Smith and Magomed Ankalaev would indeed be a title eliminator fight. While Shevchenko has pretty much taken out most of the Top 10, there are still several fighters she has yet to face that could earn a title shot in the coming months thanks to a couple of intriguing bouts scheduled.

5 key fights in Joanna Jędrzejczyk's UFC career (MMA Crossfire)

Former UFC strawwweight champion Joanna Jędrzejczyk retired after her UFC 275 bout, but her career will continue to motivate female fighters.

She said she would like to still be around the sport, so perhaps we will see her as a coach, or a commentator or something like that. Surely, it would be Joanna to become the first female UFC two-division champion even though she was the smaller fighter physically. The immense amount of strikes and action lifted the sport of MMA and the status of both women. By this time, the shock of Rose’s TKO victory back at UFC 217 in November 2017 had almost worn off and there was a sense that a healthy Joanna would regain the title. Then, we had the rematch in which Gadelha started off fast, taking JJ down and looking like she would coast to a decision. Joanna won a narrow split-decision, which helped set up the title fight with Carla Esparza, but they would fight again.

Glover Teixeira Breaks Silence After Sub-30 Second UFC Title Loss (Heavy.com)

Forty-two-year-old combatant Glover Teixeira lost his light heavyweight strap at UFC 275, but he assured fans he gave his "best."

Thank you to all of you that root for me for the support. “We got hit a little bit there but I gave my best in this fight,” Teixeira said, as transcribed by MMA Fighting. “But the hand came in the neck, I was very tired, and I think I didn’t believe [in the submission]. I should have turned, but now it’s too late to cry over spilled milk. In what was one of the most electric 205-pound UFC title tilts ever, Teixeira and Prochazka bludgeoned each other for nearly all five frames. That’s what I think Ankalaev and I both thought was probably going to happen. Teixeira entered the Octagon in Singapore this weekend for his first-ever title defense. Many believed that the fight wouldn’t go more than three rounds, let alone five.

The new champion also earned some star power with his style of fighting that leaves him in vulnerable positions.

The fact that Jedrzejczyk hadn't fought in two years seemed to catch up with her. Two of the three judges agreed that Shevchenko had won the second round, which opened the door for her to rally in the championship rounds by sweeping both on all three cards to steal the victory. The swing round in this case appeared to be Round 2 when Santos continued her success on the ground. Jedrzejczyk's five consecutive title defenses from 2015-17 remains the most successful reign in 115-pound history. Shevchenko, who briefly secured a triangle choke attempt on the ground, got the better of the standup that round and was also much busier offensively while her back was stuck to the ground. In just his third UFC fight, the 29-year-old native of the Czech Republic is now a champion. Either way, it's a fight fans won't soon forget as each warrior was willing to persevere through extreme damage and fatigue until an uncharacteristic mistake from Teixeira in Round 5 led to his heartbreaking defeat while ahead on two of three scorecards (with the third one even). This fight had a shocking ending similar to Anderson Silva-Chael Sonnen I yet was much sloppier and frenetic than most great title bouts as technique largely went out the window in this veritable street fight. Subscribe to Morning Kombat with Luke Thomas and Brian Campbell for the best analysis and in-depth news, including instant analysis of UFC 275 at the conclusion of the PPV event. But it's the incredible intangibles he employed in rallying to victory that will keep them coming back to the turnstiles to watch him compete. Meanwhile, in the co-main event, women's flyweight champion Valentina Shevchenko was forced to rally and hang on for a disputed split-decision win against Taila Santos. From an action standpoint alone, Prochazka's submission win with just 28 seconds to go in the final round easily belongs alongside Jon Jones-Alexander Gustafsson I, Zhang-Jedrzejczyk I and Frankie Edgar-Gray Maynard II as the best championship tilts in the 29 years UFC has been in business. Thanks to his willingness to so often go against the grain of what is considered the orthodox norm in this sport, it's very likely no one will.
