CHICAGO -- The Rangers needed Jon Gray more than ever in his start on Sunday afternoon. After relying on a bullpen game on Friday and playing extra innings ...

“I think I’m getting a better feel for that and just using it on both sides of the plate now. “He had a good command of the slider,” Woodward said. “I think the slider is really finding its feel now,” Gray said. He threw those a combined 95 percent of the time and drew 18 whiffs. On Sunday, he lowered his ERA to 4.85 and has now put together two quality starts in his last three outings. “But that’s where Jon Gray comes in [and], hopefully, will eat up a bunch of innings and be successful today.” Gray, though, did what was asked of him: he followed the game plan and allowed the team to save arms when it mattered most -- in extra innings. “[He] was good,” Woodward said. “There were a lot of guys that contributed to this win, basically all 26 of us. Added Gray: “I felt pretty well. Most importantly though, he helped preserve bullpen arms after a grueling couple of days for them. He can — and probably will — backstop the Rangers for playoff runs to come. Kaapo Kakko is set to become a restricted free agent, and after the 2019 second-overall pick was scratched in Game 6 Saturday night, his standing with the club is suddenly murky. “I knew there were a lot of young guys in our group, and all I tried to do with our coaching staff is get them to try and believe in themselves. The Rangers were once a team that couldn’t get out of its own way. A lot did fall into place for the Rangers, who turned heads in the NHL with a tremendous regular-season showing and an inspiring playoff performance that featured two series comebacks. The Rangers put the pieces together this season.

Rangers 8, White Sox 6: Rollercoaster Ride Lost in Extras (NBC Sports Chicago)

Despite multiple comeback efforts, the White Sox failed to capitalize late and dropped the series to Texas.

After walking the first two batters he faced, Banks would then retire the next six in order. Offensively, the White Sox struggled after scoring early in the first inning. Cueto came out of relief for only the second time in his career and did not disappoint. He kept the White Sox in the game by allowing only three runs across five innings. Overall, this was not a good game for Tony La Russa's team, and the bullpen usage has become very puzzling. This was only Cueto's second career relief appearance, his first came with the Giants late last year.

He made some unbelievable saves to keep them in it, but I think I just felt kind of a calming presence because of the group,” Stamkos said. "They found a way to get the big goal at the big time.” They are trying to become the first to win three straight championships since the New York Islanders claimed four in a row from 1980-83. NOTES: The Lightning played again without forward Brayden Point, who’s missed 10 games since suffering a lower body injury during Tampa Bay’s Game 7 victory over Toronto in the first round. He was the NHL’s leading goal scorer the previous two postseasons. “And the fact that they they have every excuse in the world to not win because nobody would fault them by saying hey, you won one, you won two, and to come back and and go for a third. “It was just one of those nights where whether it was the next shift after, whether I scored or someone else scored, it was just a feeling that we were going to get it done.” “I was just confident in our group that we would find a way, whether it was in regulation or was in overtime. But we played well, we battled hard, we had a chance to win all those games," Rangers coach Gerard Gallant said. “You’re still not at the end of our goal, but in saying that this group is pretty amazing and pretty special.” He gave us a chance to win every night. Rangers' Mika Zibanejad shut down by Lightning's checking line (New York Post)

After it had all ended, Mika Zibanejad sat at a podium alongside Chris Kreider, holding back tears. “It's just denial,” he said. “I'm empty right now.”

That was how the Rangers broke through in Game 7 against the Hurricanes, when Zibanejad had two even-strength assists and seemed to have gotten past his issues. His first shot on net came with 6:55 left in the game, and he would finish with just two. Though he managed to contribute on the power play, he had no answer for the Lightning at five-on-five. … Had nothing to do with it.” A despondent Zibanejad refused to agree. But that could not have been further from his experience on Saturday night, when he capped an underwhelming conference final with another game in which his line was effectively erased by Cirelli, Alex Killorn and Brandon Hagel.

According to some pundits, the Rangers were not a playoff team going into the season but here they are, winning two rounds and coming within two wins of the Final. Tampa Bay outshot the Rangers 30-21 but that’s a very misleading stat because the Lightning were the dominant team and Shesterkin’s play kept the game close. Before the game, Gallant made a controversial roster move by making Kappo Kakko a healthy scratch and dressing fourth line forward Dryden Hunt. The move kinda backfired when Ryan Strome left the game in the second period and did not return. “We battled hard, we tied the game on a pp goal,” Gallant said. The Lightning captain corralled a loose puck at center ice and skated into the Ranger zone. Frank Vatrano blasted a shot past Vasilevskiy to tie the game at one with less than seven minutes left in regulation.

The Rangers Are Done Being Underdogs (New York Magazine)

The New York Rangers were eliminated by the Tampa Bay Lightning in Game 6 of the NHL's Eastern Conference Final. As the Rangers' surprise playoff run comes ...

The Rangers played more than 1,200 minutes in this postseason, but the single definingminute came in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Final against the Lightning. It may not sound like much to a casual observer of the sport, but in that minute, the Rangers kept the Lightning pinned in their zone with a series of keep-ins and corralled loose pucks. But part of the fun of this team was the feeling that all of this wasn’t supposed to be happening yet — that the rebuilding process was getting results sooner than it was supposed to. The Rangers will enter next season with the weight of expectations for the first time in years. But the thing with a season like this is you only get one of them. But the Rangers weren’t supposed to even make the playoffs this season in the eyes of many experts. They won the first two games of the Eastern Conference Final while playing their best hockey of the year, then jumped out to a 2-0 lead in Game 3 before Tampa Bay took command and never let up.

Rangers Impressed by Joe Barlow's Approach in Ninth Inning (Sports Illustrated)

Texas's closer has already matched his saves total from 2021 and has converted his last two save chances after a blown save on June 3.

The Rangers had to dip into the bullpen for the final four innings, and with a 3-2 lead Woodward didn’t hesitate to give Barlow the ball again. It was the easiest thing in the world to put him back out there.” The next day, the Rangers were locked in a tight game with the Mariners, one in which starter Glenn Otto’s control wasn’t great. The Rangers called Barlow up on June 23 of last season, and he hasn’t looked back. It was just the second save he failed to convert in his big-league career. He had a light bat (just a .205 average in two seasons). But he had a solid arm and the Rangers selected Barlow in the 11th round of the 2016 MLB Draft. He signed for a $85,000 signing bonus.

The Rangers will almost certainly learn all the wrong lessons (Deadspin)

Introspection is not the strong suit of this franchise, nor of its owner, James Dolan.

The Rangers got a lot of mileage from being the youngest team in the playoffs, but progress isn’t linear and dig under the surface and other than Shesterkin the path to stardom isn’t laid out for any of the other young players. But if Kreider doesn’t bag every shot he takes again, and Lafreniere and Kakko add up to nothing more than a third liner, and Fox and Miller continue to need a GPS in their own zone, the percentages will probably reverse on them simply because. And yes, I realize Panarin scored one of the biggest goals in franchise history in Game 7 against the Pens. But a Round 1 winner on the power play being one of the most important goals in Rangers history pretty much tells you everything about Rangers history. But because this season happened after Dolan made his decree in search of something to make him feel better about his own masculinity, and the Rangers can look and say they were only a couple goals from toppling the two-time defending champs, it is far more likely they double down on this ethos on roster. The Penguins were on their third-string goalie and had to go without Sidney Crosby right when they were positioned under the guillotine. Granted, the Rangers were supposed to crack the code of getting secondary scoring for minimum money, thanks to their back-to-back top-two picks in Kaapo Kakko and Alex Lafreniere. Lafreniere has occasionally flashed being a contributor, as long as he gets five minutes of time and space no more than 20 feet from the net. Kreider’s expected goals did see a slight tick up at both evens and on the power play, but nothing that suggests 52 goals is going to be the norm. But it was ice cream for the stupid in the upper levels of MSG. In came Chris Drury and coach Gerard Gallant, the latter having a track record of success, a track record of burning out everyone around him within two seasons, and a track record for turning his team into a legion of world-class assholes. But they did have Chris Kreider shooting 40 percent on the power play for the whole season, leading to his 52 goals. the amount of attempts they give up). They were also 24th in expected goals percentage at 47.4 percent. They were 24th at even strength in Corsi share (the amount of attempts at net they take vs. It was the kind of overcompensating you’d expect a guy like Dolan to do.

Lightning-Rangers Game 6 report card: Staying composed (Tampa Bay Times)

By playing with discipline and waiting for its chances, Tampa Bay advances to a third straight Stanley Cup final.

Thanks to the defensive play in front of him, he wasn’t tested much, stopping 20 of 21 shots. Erik Cernak blocked a couple of Mika Zibanejad blasts from the left circle, the second with his right hand, sending him to the dressing room. Stamkos opened the scoring with 9:17 left in the second period on a wrist shot off the rush from the top of the right circle. He has allowed just two goals on 221 shots in those games, for a save percentage of .991. In the second period, Cirelli drove to the net, but Shesterkin stopped his backhand attempt. Shesterkin created his own trouble on the Lightning’s first scoring opportunity, as his clearing pass less than four minutes into the game was batted down by Riley Nash above the right circle. Follow our Tampa Bay Times sports team on But they stayed composed in all the ways that mattered in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference final. But Stamkos quickly made amends, scoring just 21 seconds later to restore the Lightning lead. Jan Rutta, who came out to replace Cernak, threw a puck along the boards and out of the zone to complete the kill. He was understandably upset after being hit in the jaw by the Rangers’ Alexis Lafreniere with no penalty called midway through the second period Saturday at Amalie Arena. A pass from Kucherov sent Stamkos in alone on Shesterkin, The goaltender made a glove save on his shot from low in the slot, but the puck came out of his glove and hit Stamkos in the left leg as he skated by.

During the regular season the Rangers were last among the 16 playoff teams in most 5-on-5 metrics, from scoring chances, to expected goal share, to shots and ...

The elephant in the room is the $8 million per year contract that is going to Jacob Trouba. He made headlines all postseason for his big hits, but that contract is going to be a drag on the Rangers, especially given the improvements that still need to be made and the players they would probably like to retain. The foundation is in place, and a lot of them are going to be there for a very long time. This is not meant to be overly critical because there are a lot of positives here. The big struggle is going to be finding ways to add to the roster from outside. Especially against the best teams in the league. They were badly outshot, outchanced, and mostly outplayed all postseason and were mostly hanging on by a thread in games. Certainly not to the Conference Finals. Their playoff success was driven almost entirely by a lethal power play unit that got hot at the right time, and a magnificent season-long performance from Igor Shesterkin in goal. For one, it was a great year and anytime you are one of the last four teams standing that should be seen as a success. The Rangers do not always do that. But for as successful as the season was, the Rangers can not be content with that progress. They also can not just assume they will be back in this spot next season or that continued progress is a guarantee.

Scratching Kaapo Kakko a perplexing move for Rangers (Forever Blueshirts)

Kaapo Kakko was a late scratch for Game 6 by the New York Rangers. A move being called into question after elimination.

The Rangers are in a similar position, so that’s the wild card that Drury has to contend with during these negotiations. Would the Rangers consider trading Kakko? I don’t think that’s at the top of their list. On the RFA side, the Rangers are likely to let Alexandar Georgiev walk for a cheaper backup goalie. His qualifying offer would be $2.4M and that’s just too much for what GM Chris Drury needs to get done. Next season, the Rangers will have only around $13.5 million to fill out their roster. The Rangers will hold exit meetings and breakup day sessions with the media soon.

Mishkin's Extra Shift: Lightning 2, Rangers 1 - Game 6 (Official site of the Tampa Bay Lightning)

Radio broadcaster Dave Mishkin recaps Tampa Bay's series-clinching win over the Rangers in Game 6.

For most of the night, the Lightning had the puck. Back up by a goal, the Lightning locked things down over the final 6:32 of regulation. After the second Stamkos goal, New York managed just two more SOG down the stretch, both after Shesterkin was pulled for the extra attacker. That created a two-on-one for the Lightning. Kucherov delivered the puck to Stamkos, who cut to the middle and fired a shot into Shesterkin's glove. The Rangers produced very few scoring chances during Game Six. Much of that had to do with how decisively the Lightning won the possession battle. As they had done in Games Three, Four, and Five, the Lightning competed hard and with urgency, showed great attention to detail, took away opposition time and space, managed the puck well, blocked shots, won 50-50 battles, protected the front of their net, and forced New York to play the majority of the game without the puck.

New York Rangers: Tough ending shouldn't overshadow epic ride (Bluelinestation.com)

It was one hell of a special postseason run by the New York Rangers. And a tough ending shouldn't spoil what was an epic and fun ride.

They will also learn invaluable lessons from going up against a proven winner in the Lightning. However, Gallant was able to extract every ounce of potential out of this team and they finished the regular season with more than 100 points. As many Rangers fans agreed upon on social media, this team delivered the entertainment factor time and time again. That was perfectly demonstrated in Game Six when, seconds after Frank Vatrano had made it a tied game, Steven Stamkos scored his second goal of the game to break the hearts of the Rangers. In a do-or-die Game Six, they were emphatically shown what it takes to reach the mountain top by the Tampa Bay Lightning. That should be the mentality of all New York Rangers fans today.
